    Preliminary orbital elements of six visual binary stars

    International audiencePreliminary new orbital elements were computed for the visual binary stars A 1 - ADS 1345, A 2629 - ADS 3610, BU 560 - ADS 4371, STF 3115 - ADS 4376, STF 1426 AB - ADS 7730 and STF 2437 - ADS 11956. Using Straizys and Kuriliene's data, we derived new formulae for computing dynamical parallaxes for luminosity classes IV and V. The values found for those systems are in agreement with the {Hipparcos} parallaxes and the corresponding systemic masses are consistent with the spectral types

    Toward a user-centered design of a weather forecasting decision-support tool

    Hazard Services is a software toolkit that integrates information management, hazard alerting, and communication functions into a single user interface. When complete, National Weather Service forecasters across the United States will use Hazard Services for operational issuance of weather and hydrologic alerts, making the system an instrumental part of the threat management process. As a new decision-support tool, incorporating an understanding of user requirements and behavior is an important part of building a system that is usable, allowing users to perform work-related tasks efficiently and effectively. This paper discusses the Hazard Services system and findings from a usability evaluation with a sample of end users. Usability evaluations are frequently used to support software and website development and can provide feedback on a system’s efficiency of use, effectiveness, and learnability. In the present study, a user-testing evaluation assessed task performance in terms of error rates, error types, response time, and subjective feedback from a questionnaire. A series of design recommendations was developed based on the evaluation’s findings. The recommendations not only further the design of Hazard Services, but they may also inform the designs of other decision-support tools used in weather and hydrologic forecasting. Incorporating usability evaluation into the iterative design of decision-support tools, such as Hazard Services, can improve system efficiency, effectiveness, and user experience

    Effects of display design on signal detection in flash flood forecasting

    The Flooded Locations and Simulated Hydrographs (FLASH) project is a suite of tools that use weather radar-based rainfall estimates to force hydrologic models to predict flash floods in real-time. However, early evaluation of FLASH tools in a series of simulated forecasting operations, it was believed that the data aggregation and visualization methods might have contributed to forecasting a large number of false alarms. The present study addresses the question of how two alternative data aggregation and visualization methods affect signal detection of flash floods. A sample of 30 participants viewed a series of stimuli created from FLASH images and were asked to judge whether or not they predicted significant or insignificant amounts of flash flooding. Analyses revealed that choice of aggregation method did affect probability of detection. Additional visual indicators such as geographic scale of the stimuli and threat level affected the odds of interpreting the model predictions correctly as well as congruence in responses between national and local scale model outputs

    International audienceWe present relative astrometric measurements of visual binaries taken during the second semester of 2004 with the Pupil Interferometry Speckle camera and Coronagraph (PISCO) at the 1-m Zeiss telescope of the Brera Astronomical Observatory, in Merate, Italy. We performed 207 new observations of 194 objects with angular separations in the range 0.1-4.0 arcsec and an accuracy better than ~0.01 arcsec. Our sample contains orbital couples as well as binaries whose motion is still uncertain. Our purpose is to improve the accuracy of the orbits and constrain the masses of the components. Those measurements show that the orbit of ADS 15115 needs to be revised; we propose a new orbit for this object

    Stable ultrahigh-density magneto-optical recordings using introduced linear defects

    The stability of data bits in magnetic recording media at ultrahigh densities is compromised by thermal `flips' -- magnetic spin reversals -- of nano-sized spin domains, which erase the stored information. Media that are magnetized perpendicular to the plane of the film, such as ultrathin cobalt films or multilayered structures, are more stable against thermal self-erasure than conventional memory devices. In this context, magneto-optical memories seem particularly promising for ultrahigh-density recording on portable disks, and bit densities of \sim100 Gbit inch2^{-2} have been demonstrated using recent advances in the bit writing and reading techniques. But the roughness and mobility of the magnetic domain walls prevents closer packing of the magnetic bits, and therefore presents a challenge to reaching even higher bit densities. Here we report that the strain imposed by a linear defect in a magnetic thin film can smooth rough domain walls over regions hundreds of micrometers in size, and halt their motion. A scaling analysis of this process, based on the generic physics of disorder-controlled elastic lines, points to a simple way by which magnetic media might be prepared that can store data at densities in excess of 1 Tbit inch2^{-2}.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, see also an article in TRN News at http://www.trnmag.com/Stories/041801/Defects_boost_disc_capacity_041801.htm

    International audienceWe present relative astrometric measurements of visual binaries made during the first semester of 2005, with the Pupil Interferometry Speckle Camera and Coronagraph (PISCO) at the 102-cm Zeiss telescope of the Brera Astronomical Observatory, in Merate. We performed 214 new observations of 192 objects, with angular separations in the range 0.2-4.3arcsec, and with an average accuracy of 0.01arcsec. Most of the position angles could be determined without the usual 180° ambiguity, and their mean error is . Our sample contains orbital couples as well as binaries whose motion is still uncertain. The purpose of this long-term programme is to improve the accuracy of the orbits and constrain the masses of the components. For the first time with PISCO, the astrometric calibration was made with a grating mask mounted at the entrance of the telescope. The advantage of this procedure is to provide a reliable and fully independent scale determination. We have found two possible new triple systems: ADS 7871 and KUI 15. We propose a preliminary orbit for ADS 4208

    Do divorcing couples become happier by breaking up?

    Divorce is a leap in the dark. The paper investigates whether people who split up actually become happier. Using the British Household Panel Survey, we can observe an individual's level of psychological well-being in the years before and after divorce. Our results show that divorcing couples reap psychological gains from the dissolution of their marriages. Men and women benefit equally. The paper also studies the effects of bereavement, of having dependant children and of remarriage. We measure well-being by using general health questionnaire and life satisfaction scores

    Apparent bypass of negative selection in CD8+ tumours in CD2-myc transgenic mice.

    A role for antigen stimulation in lymphoid neoplasia has been postulated and is supported by indirect evidence that suggests that the interaction of antigen with both T cells and B cells may constitute an epigenetic event that can contribute to tumour induction or tumour progression. Using myc-bearing transgenic mice that develop mainly clonal T-cell lymphomas we have investigated the possibility that endogenous antigen-mediated clonal deletion might be overridden in tumorigenesis. CD2-myc transgenic mice were backcrossed on to a CBA/Ca background to ensure Mtv-mediated deletion of V beta 11-expressing T cells in the resultant offspring. Lymphomas arising from these mice were subsequently screened for V beta 11 expression. There was a clear correlation between the age at which mice developed neoplasia and the tumour phenotype. Mice with CD4- CD8+ tumours succumbed to thymic lymphoma at a significantly younger age than mice developing CD4+ CD8+ tumours. A small number of tumours consisted of the 'forbidden' V beta 11 phenotype, showing that cells vulnerable to transformation could escape negative selection. The majority of the V beta 11-positive tumours were CD4- CD8+ and were only observed in mice showing clinical evidence of tumour development at a relatively young age. The phenotype of these cells and the age at which tumours arose suggests that T cells escaping tolerance may be susceptible to transformation

    We present new speckle measurements of the position of Linus, the satellite of the asteroid (22) Kalliope, obtained at the 1m C2PU-Epsilon telescope on the Plateau de Calern, France. Observations were made in the visible domain with the speckle camera PISCO. We obtained 122 measurements in February-March 2022 and April 2023, with a mean uncertainty close to 10 milli-arcseconds on the angular separation

    The Central Engines of 19 LINERs as Viewed by Chandra

    Using archival Chandra observations of 19 LINERs we explore the X-ray properties of their inner kiloparsec to determine the origin of their nuclear X-ray emission, to investigate the presence of an AGN, and to identify the power source of the optical emission lines. The relative numbers of LINER types in our sample are similar to those in optical spectroscopic surveys. We find that diffuse, thermal emission is very common and is concentrated within the central few hundred parsec. The average spectra of the hot gas in spirals and ellipticals are very similar to those of normal galaxies. They can be fitted with a thermal plasma (kT~0.5 keV) plus a power law (photon index of 1.3-1.5) model. There are on average 3 detected point sources in their inner kiloparsec with L(0.5-10 keV)~10^37-10^40 erg/s. The average cumulative luminosity functions for sources in spirals and ellipticals are identical to those of normal galaxies. In the innermost circle of 2.5" radius in each galaxy we find an AGN in 12 of the 19 galaxies. The AGNs contribute a median of 60% of the 0.5-10 keV luminosity of the central 2.5" region, they have luminosities of 10^37-10^39 erg/s (Eddington ratios 10^-8 to 10^-5). The ionizing luminosity of the AGNs is not enough to power the observed optical emission lines in this particular sample. Thus, we suggest that the lines are powered either by the mechanical interaction of an AGN jet (or wind) with the circumnuclear gas, or by stellar processes, e.g. photoionization by post-AGB stars or young stars.Comment: Accepted by Ap.J. 23 pages, 8 figures, emulatepj format, images of fig 1 not included, for complete PDF preprint see http://www.astro.psu.edu/users/mce/preprints
