Firms, Nonprofits, and Cooperatives: A Theory of Organizational Choice

Abstract This paper formalizes the difference between firms, nonprofits, and cooperatives and identifies optimal organizational choice. In a model of quality provision, we find a clear ranking of quality produced: Firms provide lowest and nonprofits highest levels of quality. Efficiency, however, depends on the competitive environment, the decision making process and technology. Cooperatives are optimal when decision making costs are low. Else, cooperatives are increasingly dominated by either nonprofits or firms (depending on the incremental costs of quality production). Requirements for the workflow-based support of release management processes in the automotive sector

One of the challenges the automotive industry currently has to master is the complexity of the electrical/elctronic system of a car. One key factor for reaching short product development cycles and high quality in this area are well-defined, properly executed test and release processes. In this paper we show why workflow management technology is needed to support these processes and how this support should look like. We further confront these requirements with the features of contemporary workflow technology and discuss which extensions become necessary

Process mining: Discovering direct successors in process logs

Workflow management technology requires the existence of explicit process models, i.e. a completely specified workflow design needs to be developed in order to enact a given workflow process. Such a workflow design is time consuming and often subjective and incomplete. We propose a learning method that uses the workflow log, which contains information about the process as it is actually being executed. In our method we will use a logistic regression model to discover the direct connections between events of a realistic not complete workflow log with noise. Experimental results are used to show the usefulness and limitations of the presented method

Periodic variations in the colours of the classical T Tauri star RW Aur A

The classical T Tauri star RW Aur A is an irregular variable with a large amplitude in all photometric bands. In an extended series of photometric data we found small-amplitude periodic variations in the blue colours of the star, with a period of 2.64 days. The period was relatively stable over several years. The amplitude of the periodic signal is 0.21 mag in U-V, 0.07 mag in B-V, and about 0.02 mag in V-R and V-I. No periodicity was found in the V magnitude. The relevance of this photometric period to the recently discovered periodicity in spectral features of the star is discussed, and the hypothesis of a hot spot is critically considered.Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures, uses new aa.cls, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

Why do Local Unemployment Rates in Poland Vary so Much?

Unemployment continues to bedevil Poland, albeit with striking sub-national differences, which this paper seeks to explain using random effects error component two-stage estimation for the country's NUTS 4 level powiats. Given the economy's peculiar configuration under communism, with its large private agricultural sector, emphasis is placed on rural-urban differences. While less densely populated areas do suffer higher unemployment rates, the effect is moderated by hidden unemployment in farming. On the other hand, powiats that housed the ex-state farms suffer a negative long-term legacy. Other notable results include an evident positive impact of foreign capital on local labour market fortunes.
