Gravity enhanced acoustic levitation method and apparatus
An acoustic levitation system is provided for acoustically levitating an object by applying a single frequency from a transducer into a resonant chamber surrounding the object. The chamber includes a stabilizer location along its height, where the side walls of the chamber are angled so they converge in an upward direction. When an acoustic standing wave pattern is applied between the top and bottom of the chamber, a levitation surface within the stabilizer does not lie on a horizontal plane, but instead is curved with a lowermost portion near the vertical axis of the chamber. As a result, an acoustically levitated object is urged by gravity towards the lowermost location on the levitation surface, so the object is kept away from the side walls of the chamber
Massless scalar field in two-dimensional de Sitter universe
We study the massless minimally coupled scalar field on a two--dimensional de
Sitter space-time in the setting of axiomatic quantum field theory. We
construct the invariant Wightman distribution obtained as the renormalized
zero--mass limit of the massive one. Insisting on gauge invariance of the model
we construct a vacuum state and a Hilbert space of physical states which are
invariant under the action of the whole de Sitter group. We also present the
integral expression of the conserved charge which generates the gauge
invariance and propose a definition of dual field.Comment: 13 page
Cosmic string loops and large-scale structure
We investigate the contribution made by small loops from a cosmic string
network as seeds for large-scale structure formation. We show that cosmic
string loops are highly correlated with the long-string network on large scales
and therefore contribute significantly to the power spectrum of density
perturbations if the average loop lifetime is comparable to or above one Hubble
time. This effect further improves the large-scale bias problem previously
identified in earlier studies of cosmic string models.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Transition and mixing in axisymmetric jets and vortex rings
A class of impulsively started, axisymmetric, laminar jets produced by a time dependent joint source of momentum are considered. These jets are different flows, each initially at rest in an unbounded fluid. The study is conducted at three levels of detail. First, a generalized set of analytic creeping flow solutions are derived with a method of flow classification. Second, from this set, three specific creeping flow solutions are studied in detail: the vortex ring, the round jet, and the ramp jet. This study involves derivation of vorticity, stream function, entrainment diagrams, and evolution of time lines through computer animation. From entrainment diagrams, critical points are derived and analyzed. The flow geometry is dictated by the properties and location of critical points which undergo bifurcation and topological transformation (a form of transition) with changing Reynolds number. Transition Reynolds numbers were calculated. A state space trajectory was derived describing the topological behavior of these critical points. This state space derivation yielded three states of motion which are universal for all axisymmetric jets. Third, the axisymmetric round jet is solved numerically using the unsteady laminar Navier Stokes equations. These equations were shown to be self similar for the round jet. Numerical calculations were performed up to a Reynolds number of 30 for a 60x60 point mesh. Animations generated from numerical solution showed each of the three states of motion for the round jet, including the Re = 30 case

We introduce the spinor parallel propagator for maximally symmetric spaces in
any dimension. Then, the Dirac spinor Green's functions in the maximally
symmetric spaces R^n, S^n and H^n are calculated in terms of intrinsic

Quick assessment of the condition of gearboxes used in helicopters is a safety requirement. One of the most widely used helicopter on-board-mounted condition monitoring system these days is the Health and Usage Monitoring System. It has been specifically designed to monitor the condition of all safety-critical components operating in the helicopter through calculation of so-called condition indicators (CIs) - signal processing routines designed to output a single number that represents the condition of the monitored component. Among number of available parameters, there is a couple of CIs that over the years of testing have earned a reputation of being the most reliable measures of the gear tooth condition. At the same time, however, it has been observed that in some cases, those techniques do not properly indicate the deteriorating condition with the propagation of a gear tooth fault with the period of operation. Hence, three more robust methods have been suggested, which are discussed in this article
