    A simple spouting fluidized bed was made by placing an open pipe (coatingtube) concentrically within the usual conical fluidized bed chamber. In addition, the hydrocarbon was injected through a smaller concentric pipe into the lower portion of the coatingtube. The chosen hydrocarbon concentration and temperature resulted in the deposition of the usual isotropic coating on the particles. At the same time columnar pyrocarbon deposited on the inside of the coatingtube, while soot deposited on the outside. Laminar pyrocarbon deposited on the hydrocarbon injector. Based on these observations, a qualitative model was developmed, in which the normal conical fluidized bed contains different coexisting deposition zones. With the help of this model it is possible to interpret the different coatingstructures produced by various coating conditions

    Local predictability in a simple model of atmospheric balance

    International audienceThe 2 degree-of-freedom elastic pendulum equations can be considered as the lowest order analogue of interacting low-frequency (slow) Rossby-Haurwitz and high-frequency (fast) gravity waves in the atmosphere. The strength of the coupling between the low and the high frequency waves is controlled by a single coupling parameter, e, defined by the ratio of the fast and slow characteristic time scales. In this paper, efficient, high accuracy, and symplectic structure preserving numerical solutions are designed for the elastic pendulum equation in order to study the role balanced dynamics play in local predictability. To quantify changes in the local predictability, two measures are considered: the local Lyapunov number and the leading singular value of the tangent linear map. It is shown, both based on theoretical considerations and numerical experiments, that there exist regions of the phase space where the local Lyapunov number indicates exceptionally high predictability, while the dominant singular value indicates exceptionally low predictability. It is also demonstrated that the local Lyapunov number has a tendency to choose instabilities associated with balanced motions, while the dominant singular value favors instabilities related to highly unbalanced motions. The implications of these findings for atmospheric dynamics are also discussed

    Overview of VideoCLEF 2009: New perspectives on speech-based multimedia content enrichment

    VideoCLEF 2009 offered three tasks related to enriching video content for improved multimedia access in a multilingual environment. For each task, video data (Dutch-language television, predominantly documentaries) accompanied by speech recognition transcripts were provided. The Subject Classification Task involved automatic tagging of videos with subject theme labels. The best performance was achieved by approaching subject tagging as an information retrieval task and using both speech recognition transcripts and archival metadata. Alternatively, classifiers were trained using either the training data provided or data collected from Wikipedia or via general Web search. The Affect Task involved detecting narrative peaks, defined as points where viewers perceive heightened dramatic tension. The task was carried out on the “Beeldenstorm” collection containing 45 short-form documentaries on the visual arts. The best runs exploited affective vocabulary and audience directed speech. Other approaches included using topic changes, elevated speaking pitch, increased speaking intensity and radical visual changes. The Linking Task, also called “Finding Related Resources Across Languages,” involved linking video to material on the same subject in a different language. Participants were provided with a list of multimedia anchors (short video segments) in the Dutch-language “Beeldenstorm” collection and were expected to return target pages drawn from English-language Wikipedia. The best performing methods used the transcript of the speech spoken during the multimedia anchor to build a query to search an index of the Dutch language Wikipedia. The Dutch Wikipedia pages returned were used to identify related English pages. Participants also experimented with pseudo-relevance feedback, query translation and methods that targeted proper names

    Continued fraction representation of the Coulomb Green's operator and unified description of bound, resonant and scattering states

    If a quantum mechanical Hamiltonian has an infinite symmetric tridiagonal (Jacobi) matrix form in some discrete Hilbert-space basis representation, then its Green's operator can be constructed in terms of a continued fraction. As an illustrative example we discuss the Coulomb Green's operator in Coulomb-Sturmian basis representation. Based on this representation, a quantum mechanical approximation method for solving Lippmann-Schwinger integral equations can be established, which is equally applicable for bound-, resonant- and scattering-state problems with free and Coulombic asymptotics as well.     Variational separable expansion scheme for two-body Coulomb-scattering problems

    We present a separable expansion approximation method for Coulomb-like potentials which is based on Schwinger variational principle and uses Coulomb-Sturmian functions as basis states. The new scheme provides faster convergence with respect to our formerly used non-variational approach.Comment: some typos correcte
