Coming for to carry me home : Lessons for White Christians on the Integral Role of Christian Faith in the Fight for Racial Justice in America from Slavery to #BlackLivesMatter

In July 2020, the New York Times reported an increase of 15-26 million people across the United States engaging in #BlackLivesMatter protests. Blackout Tuesday, a social media movement aimed at showcasing solidarity with the movement for racial justice in America, amassed a total of 24 million posts on Instagram, making it easily one of the top hashtags of 2020. There is no doubt that 2020 was the year the Black Lives Matter movement witnessed the most engagement of white Americans since its inception in 2013. Despite this fact, there remains an inability for many white Christians to engage in the movement for Black lives in America. This investigation considers what white Christians can learn from Black social mysticism, Womanist theology, and Queer and Indecent theologies about the integral role that Christian faith plays in the fight for racial justice. The writings of Howard Thurman, Katie Geneva Cannon, Jacquelyn Grant, Keri Day and Marcella Althaus-Reid will illustrate the importance of Christian thought in solidarity protest movements and the pursuit of freedom from the days of chattel slavery to the Civil Rights Movement to #BlackLivesMatter. From their guidance, lessons for the 21st century white Christian concerning the necessity for embodied social action in the #BlackLivesMatter movement are laid forth

From Pork to Mutton: A Zooarchaeological Perspective on Colonial New Amsterdam and Early New York City

This article analyzes the zooarchaeological remains from historical deposits to increase our understanding of the relationship between diet and ethnicity in early colonial New York City. Excavations at the Broad Financial Plaza recovered faunal remains documenting approximatley two centuries of historical occupation (middle 17th to the middle of the 19th century), a sequence rivaled by few other early colonial North American localities. Several trends are apparent in the data. Relative frequencies of pig remains declined while mutton and cattle increased correspondingly as New Amsterdam became the British colony of New York and as the Dutch residents on the block were replaced by inhabitants with British surnames. Wild animals such as deer decresead rapidly with the urbanization of Manhattan island during the British administration. Also, Old World rats appeared in the earliest levels, implying they were a part of New York life from the earliest colonial periods

Beyond Kolpak: EU Law’s unforeseen contribution to the movement of African Cricketers

The movement of professional cricketers from South Africa to England to play in County Cricket has expanded since the late 1960s. It became more attractive during the period of South African isolation and some players saw English cricket as a route to play at Test match level through changing national allegiance. This paper explores the role of law in facilitating movement in two ways. First, in the case of Greig, the attempt to ban players who chose to participate in the new commercial venture, World Series Cricket, was overturned. Second, in the Kolpak case a decision of the European Court of Justice paved the way for South Africans and Zimbabweans to abandon their national side and play in England as domestic players without the usual constraints applied to overseas players. The opportunity was taken by numerous players because of the political upheaval in cricket that was contemporaneously taking place in both South Africa and Zimbabwe. The movement of players caused concern in both South Africa and England and led to a re-consideration of the financial relationships between governing bodies and players
