    Fermionization of two distinguishable fermions

In this work we study a system of two distinguishable fermions in a 1D harmonic potential. This system has the exceptional property that there is an analytic solution for arbitrary values of the interparticle interaction. We tune the interaction strength via a magnetic offset field and compare the measured properties of the system to the theoretical prediction. At the point where the interaction strength diverges, the energy and square of the wave function for two distinguishable particles are the same as for a system of two identical fermions. This is referred to as fermionization. We have observed this phenomenon by directly comparing two distinguishable fermions with diverging interaction strength with two identical fermions in the same potential. We observe good agreement between experiment and theory. By adding one or more particles our system can be used as a quantum simulator for more complex few-body systems where no theoretical solution is available

Survey of Beam Optics Solutions for the MLS Lattice

    Get PDF
The Metrology Light Source MLS is an electron storage ring containing 24 quadrupole magnets which can be powered individually. Fully exploring the capabilities of the machine optics by tracking or experiment would be very time consuming. Therefore the quadrupoles were combined in five families and a numerical brute force approach was used to scan for areas of stable solutions in the scope of linear beam optics. In order to get information on the expected beam lifetimes for each generated optics, a model for the Touschek lifetime was implemented. Simulation results as well as experimental tests of selected optics will be presente

Women and sport in films in twenty-first century (2000-2009)

For this purpose we analysed a sample of 74 films that were selected through a non-probability quota sampling and using a descriptive investigation model. The sample was determined by way of content analysis. The results showed that the films reflected the current sports model, as well as the modern female stereotypes. This should help to question the current model shown in these types of film

THz Bursting Thresholds Measured at the Metrology Light Source

    Get PDF
At the Metrology Light Source MLS [1] owned by the Physikalisch Technische Bundesanstalt PTB the bunch length can be varied by more than two orders of magnitude [2]. The bunch length manipulation is achieved by varying different machine parameters, such as RF voltage amplitude up to 500 kV and the momentum compaction factor amp; 945; over three orders of magnitude. The subject of this article is the measurement of THz bursting thresholds at the MLS for different bunch length

Lifetime Studies at Metrology Light Source and ANKA

The Metrology Light Source MLS , situated in Berlin Germany is an electron storage ring operating from 105 MeV to 630 MeV and is serving as the national primary radiation source standard from the near infrared to the extrem ultraviolet spectral region [1]. In its standard user mode, the lifetime is dominated by the Touschek effect. Measurements and analysis of the Touschek lifetime as a function of beam current and RF Voltage will be presented and compared to measurements done at the A amp; 730; ngstro mquelle Karlsruhe ANKA electron storage ring Karlsruhe, Germany which operates at 0.5 to 2.5 GeV [2

The calpastatin-derived calpain inhibitor CP1B reduces mRNA expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2 and-9 and invasion by leukemic THP-1 cells

The ubiquitous proteases μ- and m-calpain are Ca2+-dependent cysteine endopeptidases. Besides involvement in a variety of physio(patho)logical processes, recent studies suggest a pivotal role of calpains in differentiation of hematopoietic cells and tumor cell invasion. However, the precise actions of calpains and their endogenous inhibitor, calpastatin, in these processes are only partially understood. Here we have studied the role of the calpain/calpastatin system in the invasion of leukemic cells under basal and differentiationstimulating conditions. To further differentiate the human leukaemic cell line THP-1 (monocytic), the cells were treated for 24 hours with the differentiationstimulating reagents phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Macrophage and granulocytelike differentiation was confirmed by induction of vimentin expression as well as by microscopic and fluorescence assisted cytometric analysis. Extracellular matrix (ECM) invasion of both the basal and differentiation stimulated cells in a Matrigel assay was inhibited by preincubation of the cells with the specific calpain inhibitor CP1B for 24 hours. Inhibition of invasiveness correlated with decreased mRNA expression and secretion of the matrix metalloproteinases MMP-2 and MMP-9. In contrast, addition of CP1B only during the invasion process did neither influence transmigration nor MMP release. This is the first report showing that the calpain/calpastatin system mediates MMPmRNA expression of the leukemic THP-1 cells and as a consequence their invasiveness
