Basic research in wake vortex alleviation using a variable twist wing
The variable twist wing concept was used to investigate the relative effects of lift and turbulence distribution on the rolled up vortex wake. Several methods of reducing the vortex strength behind an aircraft were identified. These involve the redistribution of lift spanwise on the wing and drag distribution along the wing. Initial attempts to use the variable twist wing velocity data to validate the WAKE computer code have shown a strong correlation, although the vorticity levels were not exactly matched
Ebola Virus Localization in the Macaque Reproductive Tract during Acute Ebola Virus Disease.
Sexual transmission of Ebola virus (EBOV) has been demonstrated more than a year after recovery from the acute phase of Ebola virus disease (EVD). The mechanisms underlying EBOV persistence and sexual transmission are not currently understood. Using the acute macaque model of EVD, we hypothesized EBOV would infect the reproductive tissues and sought to localize the infection in these tissues using immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy. In four female and eight male macaques that succumbed to EVD between 6 and 9 days after EBOV challenge, we demonstrate widespread EBOV infection of the interstitial tissues and endothelium in the ovary, uterus, testis, seminal vesicle, epididymis, and prostate gland, with minimal associated tissue immune response or organ pathology. Given the widespread involvement of EBOV in the reproductive tracts of both male and female macaques, it is reasonable to surmise that our understanding of the mechanisms underlying sexual transmission of EVD and persistence of EBOV in immune-privileged sites would be facilitated by the development of a nonhuman primate model in which the macaques survived past the acute stage into convalescence
Development of Readout Interconnections for the Si-W Calorimeter of SiD
The SiD collaboration is developing a Si-W sampling electromagnetic
calorimeter, with anticipated application for the International Linear
Collider. Assembling the modules for such a detector will involve special
bonding technologies for the interconnections, especially for attaching a
silicon detector wafer to a flex cable readout bus. We review the interconnect
technologies involved, including oxidation removal processes, pad surface
preparation, solder ball selection and placement, and bond quality assurance.
Our results show that solder ball bonding is a promising technique for the Si-W
ECAL, and unresolved issues are being addressed.Comment: 8 pages + title, 6 figure
Seismic structure of the southern Gulf of California from Los Cabos block to the East Pacific Rise
Multichannel reflection and coincident wide-angle seismic data collected during the 2002 Premier Experiment, Sea of Cortez, Addressing the Development of Oblique Rifting (PESCADOR) experiment provide the most detailed seismic structure to date of the southern Gulf of California. Multichannel seismic (MCS) data were recorded with a 6-km-long streamer, 480-channel, aboard the R/V Maurice Ewing, and wide-angle data was recorded by 19 instruments spaced every similar to 12 km along the transect. The MCS and wide-angle data reveal the seismic structure across the continent-ocean transition of the rifted margin. Typical continental and oceanic crust are separated by a similar to 75-km-wide zone of extended continental crust dominated by block-faulted basement. Little lateral variation in crustal thicknesses and seismic velocities is observed in the oceanic crust, suggesting a constant rate of magmatic productivity since seafloor spreading began. Oceanic crustal thickness and mean crustal velocities suggest normal mantle temperature (1300 degrees C) and passive mantle upwelling at the early stages of seafloor spreading. The crustal thickness, width of extended continental crust, and predicted temperature conditions all indicate a narrow rift mode of extension. On the basis of upper and lower crust stretching factors, an excess of lower crust was found in the extended continental crust. Total extension along transect 5W is estimated to be similar to 35 km. Following crustal extension, new oceanic crust similar to 6.4-km-thick was formed at a rate of similar to 48 mm a(-1) to accommodate plate separation
Intermediate phase, network demixing, boson and floppy modes, and compositional trends in glass transition temperatures of binary AsxS1-x system
The structure of binary As_xS_{1-x} glasses is elucidated using
modulated-DSC, Raman scattering, IR reflectance and molar volume experiments
over a wide range (8%<x<41%) of compositions. We observe a reversibility window
in the calorimetric experiments, which permits fixing the three elastic phases;
flexible at x<22.5%, intermediate phase (IP) in the 22.5%<x<29.5% range, and
stressed-rigid at x>29.5%. Raman scattering supported by first principles
cluster calculations reveal existence of both pyramidal (PYR, As(S1/2)3) and
quasi-tetrahedral(QT, S=As(S1/2)3) local structures. The QT unit concentrations
show a global maximum in the IP, while the concentration of PYR units becomes
comparable to those of QT units in the phase, suggesting that both these local
structures contribute to the width of the IP. The IP centroid in the sulfides
is significantly shifted to lower As content x than in corresponding selenides,
a feature identified with excess chalcogen partially segregating from the
backbone in the sulfides, but forming part of the backbone in selenides. These
ideas are corroborated by the proportionately larger free volumes of sulfides
than selenides, and the absence of chemical bond strength scaling of Tgs
between As-sulfides and As-selenides. Low-frequency Raman modes increase in
scattering strength linearly as As content x of glasses decreases from x = 20%
to 8%, with a slope that is close to the floppy mode fraction in flexible
glasses predicted by rigidity theory. These results show that floppy modes
contribute to the excess vibrations observed at low frequency. In the
intermediate and stressed rigid elastic phases low-frequency Raman modes
persist and are identified as boson modes. Some consequences of the present
findings on the optoelectronic properties of these glasses is commented upon.Comment: Accepted for PR
An analysis of integrative outcomes in the Dayton peace negotiations
The nature of the negotiated outcomes of the eight issues of the Dayton Peace Agreement was studied in terms of their integrative and distributive aspects. in cases where integrative elements were Sound, further analysis was conducted by concentrating on Pruitt's five types of integrative solutions: expanding the pie, cost cutting, non-specific compensation, logrolling, and bridging. The results showed that real world international negotiations can arrive at integrative agreements even when they involve redistribution of resources tin this case the redistribution of former Yugoslavia). Another conclusion was that an agreement can consist of several distributive outcomes and several integrative outcomes produced by different kinds of mechanisms. Similarly, in single issues more than one mechanism can be used simultaneously. Some distributive bargaining was needed in order to determine how much compensation was required. Finally, each integrative formula had some distributive aspects as well

A humanized monoclonal antibody that inhibits platelet-surface ERp72 reveals a role for ERp72 in thrombosis
Background: Within the endoplasmic reticulum, thiol isomerase enzymes modulate the formation and rearrangement of disulphide bonds in newly folded proteins entering the secretory pathway to ensure correct protein folding. In addition to their intracellular importance, thiol isomerases have been recently identified to be present on the surface of a number of cell types where they are important for cell function. Several thiol isomerases are known to be present on the resting platelet surface including PDI, ERp5 and ERp57 and levels are increased following platelet activation. Inhibition of the catalytic activity of these enzymes results in diminished platelet function and thrombosis.
Aim: We previously determined that ERp72 is present at the resting platelet surface and levels increase upon platelet activation, however its functional role on the cell surface was unclear. We aimed to investigate the role of ERp72 in platelet function and its role in thrombosis.
Methods: Using HuCAL technology, fully humanised Fc-null anti-ERp72 antibodies were generated. Eleven antibodies were screened for their ability to inhibit ERp72 activity and the most potent inhibitory antibody (anti-ERp72) selected for further testing in platelet functional assays.
Results and conclusions: Anti-ERp72 inhibited platelet aggregation, granule secretion, calcium mobilisation and integrin activation revealing an important role for extracellular ERp72 in the regulation of platelet activation. Consistent with this, infusion of anti-ERp72 into mice protected against thrombosis
The Highly Damped Quasinormal Modes of -dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom Black Holes in the Small Charge Limit
We analyze in detail the highly damped quasinormal modes of -dimensional
Reissner-Nordstrm black holes with small charge, paying
particular attention to the large but finite damping limit in which the
Schwarzschild results should be valid. In the infinite damping limit, we
confirm using different methods the results obtained previously in the
literature for higher dimensional Reissner-Nordstrm black holes.
Using a combination of analytic and numerical techniques we also calculate the
transition of the real part of the quasinormal mode frequency from the
Reissner-Nordstrm value for very large damping to the
Schwarzschild value of for intermediate damping. The real
frequency does not interpolate smoothly between the two values. Instead there
is a critical value of the damping at which the topology of the
Stokes/anti-Stokes lines change, and the real part of the quasinormal mode

Intermediate Asymptotics of the Kerr Quasinormal Spectrum
We study analytically the quasinormal mode spectrum of near-extremal
(rotating) Kerr black holes. We find an analytic expression for these
black-hole resonances in terms of the black-hole physical parameters: its
Bekenstein-Hawking temperature T_{BH} and its horizon's angular velocity
\Omega, which is valid in the intermediate asymptotic regime

Defining forgiveness: Christian clergy and general population perspectives.
The lack of any consensual definition of forgiveness is a serious weakness in the research literature (McCullough, Pargament & Thoresen, 2000). As forgiveness is at the core of Christianity, this study returns to the Christian source of the concept to explore the meaning of forgiveness for practicing Christian clergy. Comparisons are made with a general population sample and social science definitions of forgiveness to ensure that a shared meaning of forgiveness is articulated. Anglican and Roman Catholic clergy (N = 209) and a general population sample (N = 159) completed a postal questionnaire about forgiveness. There is agreement on the existence of individual differences in forgiveness. Clergy and the general population perceive reconciliation as necessary for forgiveness while there is no consensus within psychology. The clergy suggests that forgiveness is limitless and that repentance is unnecessary while the general population suggests that there are limits and that repentance is necessary. Psychological definitions do not conceptualize repentance as necessary for forgiveness and the question of limits has not been addressed although within therapy the implicit assumption is that forgiveness is limitless.</p
