The oxidation of carbon monoxide using a tin oxide catalyst
This paper outlines some of the steps involved in the development by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) of a catalytic device for the recombination of carbon monoxide and oxygen in a CO2 laser system. It contrasts the differences between CO oxidation for air purification and for laser environmental control, but indicates that there are similarities between the physical specifications. The principal features of catalytic devices are outlined and some experimental work described. This includes measurements concerning the structure and mechanical properties of the artifact, the preparation of the catalyst coating and its interaction with the gaseous environment. The paper concludes with some speculation about the method by which the reaction actually occurs
The Effects of Coworker Relationships, Involvement, and Supportiveness on Job Satisfaction and Performance
Past research has indicated that relationships, involvement, and supportiveness have an effect on job satisfaction and performance. A study was done on Gettysburg College students who have had experience with group work. Sixty-four (29 males, 35 females) Gettysburg College students were used as participants in the study. The study was split fairly evenly between sophomores, juniors, and seniors. To start, the survey included two demographic questions: gender and class year. Participants completed an online survey about the relationships among group mates, group involvement, and group support experience. Questions about the overall satisfaction and performance were also included. A correlational design was used to analyze the data. The results of this study concluded that there was significant association between positive relationships and involvement and job satisfaction and group performance in a group scenario. There was a significant association between group support and job satisfaction, but not performance

Global morphogenetic flow is accurately predicted by the spatial distribution of myosin motors.
During embryogenesis tissue layers undergo morphogenetic flow rearranging and folding into specific shapes. While developmental biology has identified key genes and local cellular processes, global coordination of tissue remodeling at the organ scale remains unclear. Here, we combine in toto light-sheet microscopy of the Drosophila embryo with quantitative analysis and physical modeling to relate cellular flow with the patterns of force generation during the gastrulation process. We find that the complex spatio-temporal flow pattern can be predicted from the measured meso-scale myosin density and anisotropy using a simple, effective viscous model of the tissue, achieving close to 90% accuracy with one time dependent and two constant parameters. Our analysis uncovers the importance of a) spatial modulation of myosin distribution on the scale of the embryo and b) the non-locality of its effect due to mechanical interaction of cells, demonstrating the need for the global perspective in the study of morphogenetic flow
Compressed self-avoiding walks, bridges and polygons
We study various self-avoiding walks (SAWs) which are constrained to lie in
the upper half-plane and are subjected to a compressive force. This force is
applied to the vertex or vertices of the walk located at the maximum distance
above the boundary of the half-space. In the case of bridges, this is the
unique end-point. In the case of SAWs or self-avoiding polygons, this
corresponds to all vertices of maximal height. We first use the conjectured
relation with the Schramm-Loewner evolution to predict the form of the
partition function including the values of the exponents, and then we use
series analysis to test these predictions.Comment: 29 pages, 6 figure

Borders General Hospital, Melrose, Scotland.
Arthur Cruickshank was part of the post-war
generation of palaeontologists who laid the
foundations on which today’s researchers
build. Appropriately for someone from
an expatriate Scots family living in Kenya,
much of his work was on the extinct reptiles
of the great southern palaeocontinent of
Gondwana
