Rooftop and indoor reception with transmit diversity applied to DVB-T networks: A long term measurement campaign
Although transmit Delay Diversity (DD) can
provide a gain in indoor and other Non Line of Sight situations (NLOS), it can introduce degradation in rooftop reception. In fact, when the Ricean K factor of the channel
is significantly high (e.g. Line of Sight reception), the channel performs similar to an AWGN channel where the performance degrades due to DD that artificially increase

Skin prick testing does not reflect the presence of IgE against food allergens in adult eosinophilic esophagitis patients: a case study
Skin prick testing is widely used to predict the presence of allergen-specific IgE. In eosinophilic esophagitis patients, who frequently exhibit polysensitization and broad reactivity upon skin prick testing, this is commonly used to aid avoidance recommendations in the clinical management of their disease. We present here the predictive value of skin prick testing for the presence of allergen-specific IgE, in 12 patients, determined by immunoblot against the allergen extracts using individual-matched serum. Our results demonstrate a high degree of predictive value for aeroallergens but a poor predictive value for food allergens. This suggests that skin prick testing likely identifies IgE reactivity towards aeroallergens in adult eosinophilic esophagitis but this is not true for foods. Consequently, IgE immunoblotting might be required for determining food avoidance in these patients
A Coupled Model of Population, Poaching, and Economic Dynamics to Assess Rhino Conservation Through Legal Trade
Rhinoceros populations in Africa are in peril largely due to the high value of their horns and the poaching that ensues. The strategy of legalizing the international trade of rhino horn is receiving increased support among both the people and government officials in Africa. Many in the international conservation community remain opposed to the idea. The legalization strategy is straightforward in theory: legalizing the trade of rhino horn will introduce a large quantity of horn to the market, the increased supply will lead to lower prices for rhino horn, and lower prices will reduce the overall poaching pressure these animals face. In this work, we propose a model for rhino populations that includes the interrelated dynamics of the price of rhino horn and poaching rates to establish thresholds of parameter values for which legalization can either increase or decrease rhino populations
Anticancer Activity of Ag(I) N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes Derived from 4,5-Dichloro-1H-Imidazole
A class of Ag(I) N-heterocyclic carbene silver complexes, 1–3, derived from 4,5-dichloro-1H-imidazole has been evaluated for their anticancer activity against the human cancer cell lines OVCAR-3 (ovarian), MB157 (breast), and Hela (cervical). Silver complexes 1–3 are active against the ovarian and breast cancer cell lines. A preliminary in vivo study shows 1 to be active against ovarian cancer in mice. The results obtained in these studies warrant further investigation of these compounds in vivo
On the Mechanism of Time--Delayed Feedback Control
The Pyragas method for controlling chaos is investigated in detail from the
experimental as well as theoretical point of view. We show by an analytical
stability analysis that the revolution around an unstable periodic orbit
governs the success of the control scheme. Our predictions concerning the
transient behaviour of the control signal are confirmed by numerical

Use of mental simulations to change theory of planned behaviour variables
Objectives. The predictive validity of the theory of planned behaviour iswell established, but much less is known about: (a) whether there are causal relationships between key components of the model and (b) how to go about changing the theory of planned behaviour variables. This study tested the ability of outcome and process simulations to change variables specified in the theory of planned behaviour in relation to blood donation.
Design. Participants (N ¼ 146) were randomized to one of four conditions: outcome simulation only, process simulation only, process-plus-outcome simulation and a
distractor control condition. The dependent variables were state anxiety, and intention attitude, subjective norm and perceived control from the theory of planned behaviour.
Methods. Participants were asked to empty their mind and visualize themselves: (a) after donating blood (outcome manipulation), (b) preparing to donate blood (process manipulation), (c) both preparing to donate blood and after having donated blood (process-plus-outcome manipulation) or (d) both preparing to get a high mark and after having got a high mark on their course (control condition). Following mental rehearsal, participants completed the dependent variables.
Results. There were no main effects of outcome simulation, but process simulation successfully increased intention, subjective norm and perceived control. There was also a significant outcome simulation x process simulation interaction for attitude. The effect of the process manipulation on intention was mediated by subjective norm and perceived control.
Conclusions. The findings show promise for the use of mental simulations in changing cognitions and further research is required to extend the present findings to
other health behaviours.</p
Quasiperiodic time dependent current in driven superlattices: distorted Poincare maps and strange attractors
Intriguing routes to chaos have been experimentally observed in semiconductor
superlattices driven by an ac field. In this work, a theoretical model of time
dependent transport in ac driven superlattices is numerically solved. In
agreement with experiments, distorted Poincare maps in the quasiperiodic regime
are found. They indicate the appearance of very complex attractors and routes
to chaos as the amplitude of the AC signal increases. Distorted maps are caused
by the discrete well-to-well jump motion of a domain wall during spiky
high-frequency self-sustained oscillations of the current.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Resonance phenomena of a solitonlike extended object in a bistable potential
We investigate the dynamics of a soliton that behaves as an extended
particle. The soliton motion in an effective bistable potential can be chaotic
in a similar way as the Duffing oscillator. We generalize the concept of
geometrical resonance to spatiotemporal systems and apply it to design a
nonfeedback mechanism of chaos control using localized perturbations.We show
the existence of solitonic stochastic resonance.Comment: 3 postscript figure
Intermittency transitions to strange nonchaotic attractors in a quasiperiodically driven Duffing oscillator
Different mechanisms for the creation of strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs)
are studied in a two-frequency parametrically driven Duffing oscillator. We
focus on intermittency transitions in particular, and show that SNAs in this
system are created through quasiperiodic saddle-node bifurcations (Type-I
intermittency) as well as through a quasiperiodic subharmonic bifurcation
(Type-III intermittency). The intermittent attractors are characterized via a
number of Lyapunov measures including the behavior of the largest nontrivial
Lyapunov exponent and its variance as well as through distributions of
finite-time Lyapunov exponents. These attractors are ubiquitous in
quasiperiodically driven systems; the regions of occurrence of various SNAs are

Restricted feedback control of one-dimensional maps
Dynamical control of biological systems is often restricted by the practical
constraint of unidirectional parameter perturbations. We show that such a
restriction introduces surprising complexity to the stability of
one-dimensional map systems and can actually improve controllability. We
present experimental cardiac control results that support these analyses.
Finally, we develop new control algorithms that exploit the structure of the
restricted-control stability zones to automatically adapt the control feedback
parameter and thereby achieve improved robustness to noise and drifting system
