POD-Galerkin advection model for convective flow Application to a flapping rectangular supersonic jet
International audienceThis article describes a model obtained by applying Proper Orthogonal Decomposition to the ad-vection equation. The resulting set of equations links the POD modes, their temporal and spatial derivatives and the flow convection velocity. It provides a technique to calculate the convection velocity of coherent structures. It follows, from the model, that a priori knowledge of the convection velocity suffices to construct a dynamical model of the flow. This is demonstrated using experimental data
Liquid Transport Due to Light Scattering
Using experiments and theory, we show that light scattering by
inhomogeneities in the index of refraction of a fluid can drive a large-scale
flow. The experiment uses a near-critical, phase-separated liquid, which
experiences large fluctuations in its index of refraction. A laser beam
traversing the liquid produces a large-scale deformation of the interface and
can cause a liquid jet to form. We demonstrate that the deformation is produced
by a scattering-induced flow by obtaining good agreements between the measured
deformations and those calculated assuming this mechanism.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters v2: Edited

The role of phase compatibility in martensite
Shape memory alloys inherit their macroscopic properties from their mesoscale
microstructure originated from the martensitic phase transformation. In a cubic
to orthorhombic transition, a single variant of marten- site can have a
compatible (exact) interface with the austenite for some special lattice
parameters in contrast to conventional austenite/twinned martensite interface
with a transition layer. Experimentally, the phase compat- ibility results in a
dramatic drop in thermal hysteresis and gives rise to very stable functional
properties over cycling. Here, we investigate the microstructures observed in
Ti50Ni50-xPdx alloys that undergo a cubic to orthorhombic martensitic
transformation using a three dimensional phase field approach. We will show
that the simulation results are in very good agreement with transmission
electron microscopy observations. However, the understanding of the drop in
thermal hysteresis requires the coupling of phase transformation with plastic
activity. We will discuss this point within the framework of thermoelasticity,
which is a generic feature of the martensitic transformation.Comment: Accepted for publication in in Journal of Applied Physic

Stretching and squeezing of sessile dielectric drops by the optical radiation pressure
We study numerically the deformation of sessile dielectric drops immersed in
a second fluid when submitted to the optical radiation pressure of a continuous
Gaussian laser wave. Both drop stretching and drop squeezing are investigated
at steady state where capillary effects balance the optical radiation pressure.
A boundary integral method is implemented to solve the axisymmetric Stokes flow
in the two fluids. In the stretching case, we find that the drop shape goes
from prolate to near-conical for increasing optical radiation pressure whatever
the drop to beam radius ratio and the refractive index contrast between the two
fluids. The semi-angle of the cone at equilibrium decreases with the drop to
beam radius ratio and is weakly influenced by the index contrast. Above a
threshold value of the radiation pressure, these "optical cones" become
unstable and a disruption is observed. Conversely, when optically squeezed, the
drop shifts from an oblate to a concave shape leading to the formation of a
stable "optical torus". These findings extend the electrohydrodynamics approach
of drop deformation to the much less investigated "optical domain" and reveal
the openings offered by laser waves to actively manipulate droplets at the
micrometer scale
Internal stresses in steel plate generated by shape memory alloy inserts
Neutron strain scanning was employed to investigate the internal stress fields in steel plate coupons with embedded prestrained superelastic NiTi shape memory alloy inserts. Strain fields in steel were evaluated at T = 21 °C and 130 °C on virgin coupons as well as on mechanically and thermally fatigued coupons. Internal stress fields were evaluated by direct calculation of principal stress components from the experimentally measured lattice strains as well as by employing an inverse finite element modeling approach. It is shown that if the NiTi inserts are embedded into the elastic steel matrix following a carefully designed technological procedure, the internal stress fields vary with temperature in a reproducible and predictable way. It is estimated that this mechanism of internal stress generation can be safely applied in the temperature range from −20 °C to 150 °C and is relatively resistant to thermal and mechanical fatigue. The predictability and fatigue endurance of the mechanism are of essential importance for the development of future smart metal matrix composites or smart structures with embedded shape memory alloy components
