The correspondence between small-scale coronal structures and the evolving solar magnetic field
Solar coronal bright points, first identified in soft X-rays as X-ray Bright Points (XBPs), are compact, short lived and associated with small bipolar magnetic flux. Contradictory studies have suggested that XBPs are either a primary signature of the emerging flux spectrum of the quiet Sun, or that they are representative of the disappearance of pre-existing flux. Results are presented using coordinated data obtained during recent X-ray sounding rocket flights on 15 August and 11 December 1987 to determine the correspondence of XBPs with time-series, ground based observations of evolving bipolar magnetic structures, He-I dark points, and the network. The results are consistent with the view that coronal bright points are more likely to be associated with the annihilation of pre-existing flux than with emerging flux

Outcomes and safety of concomitant nevirapine and rifampicin treatment under programme conditions in Malawi.
SETTING: Thyolo District Hospital, rural Malawi. OBJECTIVES: To report on 1) clinical, immunological and virological outcomes and 2) safety among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected patients with tuberculosis (TB) who received concurrent nevirapine (NVP) and rifampicin (RMP) based treatment. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: Analysis of programme data, June-December 2007. RESULTS: Of a total of 156 HIV-infected TB patients who started NVP-based antiretroviral treatment, 136 (87%) completed TB treatment successfully, 16 (10%) died and 5 (4%) were transferred out. Mean body weight and CD4 gain (adults) were respectively 4.4 kg (95%CI 3.3-5.4) and 140 cells/mm(3) (95%CI 117-162). Seventy-four per cent of patients who completed TB treatment and had a viral load performed (n = 74) had undetectable levels (<50 copies/ml), while 17 (22%) had a viral load of 50-1000 copies/ml. Hepatotoxicity was present in 2 (1.3%) patients at baseline. Two patients developed Grade 2 and one developed Grade 3 alanine transaminase enzyme elevations during TB treatment (incidence rate per 10 years of follow-up 4.2, 95%CI 1.4-13.1). There were no reported deaths linked to hepatotoxicity. CONCLUSIONS: In a rural district in Malawi, concomitant NVP and RMP treatment is associated with good TB treatment outcomes and appears safe. Further follow-up of patients would be useful to ascertain the longer-term effects of this concurrent treatment
Percolation in living neural networks
We study living neural networks by measuring the neurons' response to a
global electrical stimulation. Neural connectivity is lowered by reducing the
synaptic strength, chemically blocking neurotransmitter receptors. We use a
graph-theoretic approach to show that the connectivity undergoes a percolation
transition. This occurs as the giant component disintegrates, characterized by
a power law with critical exponent is independent of the
balance between excitatory and inhibitory neurons and indicates that the degree
distribution is gaussian rather than scale freeComment: PACS numbers: 87.18.Sn, 87.19.La, 64.60.Ak

Temperature dependence of the interlayer magnetoresistance of quasi-one-dimensional Fermi liquids at the magic angles
The interlayer magnetoresistance of a quasi-one-dimensional Fermi liquid is
considered for the case of a magnetic field that is rotated within the plane
perpendicular to the most-conducting direction. Within semi-classical transport
theory dips in the magnetoresistance occur at integer amgic angles only when
the electronic dispersion parallel to the chains is nonlinear. If the field
direction is fixed at one of the magic angles and the temperature is varied the
resulting variation of the scattering rate can lead to a non-monotonic
variation of the interlayer magnetoresistance with temperature. Although the
model considered here gives a good description of some of the properties of the
Bechgaard salts, (TMTSF)2PF6 for pressures less than 8kbar and (TMTSF)2ClO4 it
gives a poor description of their properties when the field is parallel to the
layers and of the intralayer transport.Comment: 10pages, RevTeX + epsf, 3 figure

Correspondence between solar fine-scale structures in the corona, transition region, and lower atmosphere from collaborative observations
The Soft X-Ray Imaging Payload and the High Resolution Telescope and Spectrograph (HRTS) instrument were launched from White Sands on 11 December 1987 in coordinated sounding rocket flights to investigate the correspondence of coronal and transition region structures, especially the relationship between X-ray bright points (XBPs) and transition region small spatial scale energetic events. The coaligned data from X-ray images are presented along with maps of sites of transition region energetic events observed in C IV (100,000 K), HRTS 1600 A spectroheliograms of the T sub min region and ground based magnetogram and He I 10830 A images
