    Oral Cancer Awareness and its Determinants among a Selected Malaysian Population

    Objective: To assess oral cancer awareness, its associated factors and related sources of information among a selected group of Malaysians. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on all Malaysian ethnic groups aged >= 15 years old at eight strategically chosen shopping malls within a two week time period. Data were analysed using chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression. Significance level was set at alpha<0.05. Results: Most (84.2%) respondents had heard of oral cancer. Smoking was the most (92.4%) recognized high risk habit. Similar levels of awareness were seen for unhealed ulcers (57.3%) and red/white patches (58.0%) as signs of oral cancer. Age, gender, ethnicity, marital status, education, occupation and income were significantly associated with oral cancer awareness (p<0.05). Conclusions: There was a general lack of awareness regarding the risk habits, early signs and symptoms, and the benefits of detecting this disease at an early stage. Mass media and health campaigns were the main sources of information about oral cancer. In our Malaysian population, gender and age were significantly associated with the awareness of early signs and symptoms and prevention of oral cancer, respectively.Article Link: http://koreascience.or.kr/article/ArticleFullRecord.jsp?cn=POCPA9_2013_v14n3_195

    Asymmetric magnetic reconnection with a flow shear and applications to the magnetopause

    We perform a theoretical and numerical study of anti-parallel 2D magnetic reconnection with asymmetries in the density and reconnecting magnetic field strength in addition to a bulk flow shear across the reconnection site in the plane of the reconnecting fields, which commonly occurs at planetary magnetospheres. We predict the speed at which an isolated X-line is convected by the flow, the reconnection rate, and the critical flow speed at which reconnection no longer takes place for arbitrary reconnecting magnetic field strengths, densities, and upstream flow speeds, and confirm the results with two-fluid numerical simulations. The predictions and simulation results counter the prevailing model of reconnection at Earth's dayside magnetopause which says reconnection occurs with a stationary X-line for sub-Alfvenic magnetosheath flow, reconnection occurs but the X-line convects for magnetosheath flows between the Alfven speed and double the Alfven speed, and reconnection does not occur for magnetosheath flows greater than double the Alfven speed. We find that X-line motion is governed by momentum conservation from the upstream flows, which are weighted differently in asymmetric systems, so the X-line convects for generic conditions including sub-Alfvenic upstream speeds. For the reconnection rate, while the cutoff condition for symmetric reconnection is that the difference in flows on the two sides of the reconnection site is twice the Alfven speed, we find asymmetries cause the cutoff speed for asymmetric reconnection to be higher than twice the asymmetric form of the Alfven speed. The results compare favorably with an observation of reconnection at Earth's polar cusps during a period of northward interplanetary magnetic field, where reconnection occurs despite the magnetosheath flow speed being more than twice the magnetosheath Alfven speed, the previously proposed suppression condition.Comment: 46 pages, 7 figures, abstract abridged here, accepted to Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physic

    CYTOTOXICITY AND APOPTOTIC INDUCIBILITY OF HYDRO-ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF AERIAL PARTS OF POTHOS SCANDENS L. AGAINST MCF-7 BREAST CANCER CELL LINE

    Objective: To investigate the ability of 50% hydro-ethanolic extract of Pothos scandens (P. scandens) to induce cytotoxicity and apoptosis in MCF-7 cell lines.Methods: Aerial parts of P. scandens were extracted with 50% ethanol. The crude extract obtained was evaluated for its ability to induce cytotoxicity against MCF-7 (breast cancer) and L929 (normal fibroblast) cell lines by MTT (3-(4, 5 dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay. The ability to induce apoptosis was determined by acridine orange (AO) and ethidium bromide (EB) double staining method. The above activity was confirmed using the comet assay.Results: The study revealed that the plant extract showed significant cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 cell lines with an IC50 of 90.18±5.20 µg/ml. Further it was also found that the cell death of MCF-7 treated with crude extract was due to the induction of apoptosis, which was ascertained by comet assay.Conclusion: The study provides scientific evidence for the anticancer activity of extracts of P. scandens paving a way to further research of using this plant in the development of the novel anticancer drug.Keywords: P. scandens, MCF-7, L929, MTT assay, Apoptosis, Comet assa

    Chromatic Dynamics of an Electron Beam in a Plasma Based Accelerator

    We present a theoretical investigation of the chromatic dynamics of the witness beam within a plasma based accelerator. We derive the single particle motion of an electron in an ion column within a nonlinear, blowout wake including adiabatic dampening and adiabatic variations in plasma density. Using this, we calculate the evolution of the beam moments and emittance for an electron beam. Our model can handle near arbitrary longitudinal phase space distributions. We include the effects of energy change in the beam, imperfect wake loading, initial transverse offsets of the beam, and mismatch between the beam and plasma. We use our model to derive analytic saturation lengths for the projected, longitudinal slice, and energy slice emittance under different beam loading conditions. Further, we show that the centroid oscillations and spot sizes vary between the slices and the variation depends strongly on the beam loading. Next, we show how a beam evolves in a full plasma source with density ramps and show that the integral of the plasma density along the ramp determines the impact on the beam. Finally, we derive several simple scaling laws that show how to design a plasma based injector to produce a target beam energy and energy spread.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure

    Neutrons from multiplicity-selected La-La and Nb-Nb collisions at 400A MeV and La-La collisions at 250A MeV

    Triple-differential cross sections for neutrons from high-multiplicity La-La collisions at 250 and 400 MeV per nucleon and Nb-Nb collisions at 400 MeV per nucleon were measured at several polar angles as a function of the azimuthal angle with respect to the reaction plane of the collision. The reaction plane was determined by a transverse-velocity method with the capability of identifying charged-particles with Z=1, Z=2, and Z > 2. The flow of neutrons was extracted from the slope at mid-rapidity of the curve of the average in-plane momentum vs the center-of-mass rapidity. The squeeze-out of the participant neutrons was observed in a direction normal to the reaction plane in the normalized momentum coordinates in the center-of-mass system. Experimental results of the neutron squeeze-out were compared with BUU calculations. The polar-angle dependence of the maximum azimuthal anisotropy ratio r(θ)r(\theta) was found to be insensitive to the mass of the colliding nuclei and the beam energy. Comparison of the observed polar-angle dependence of the maximum azimuthal anisotropy ratio r(θ)r(\theta) with BUU calculations for free neutrons revealed that r(θ)r(\theta) is insensitive also to the incompressibility modulus in the nuclear equation of state.Comment: ReVTeX, 16 pages, 17 figures.     Maximum Azimuthal Anisotropy of Neutrons from Nb-Nb Collisions at 400 AMeV and the Nuclear Equation of State

    We measured the first azimuthal distributions of triple--differential cross sections of neutrons emitted in heavy-ion collisions, and compared their maximum azimuthal anisotropy ratios with Boltzmann--Uehling--Uhlenbeck (BUU) calculations with a momentum-dependent interaction. The BUU calculations agree with the triple- and double-differential cross sections for positive rapidity neutrons emitted at polar angles from 7 to 27 degrees; however, the maximum azimuthal anisotropy ratio for these free neutrons is insensitive to the size of the nuclear incompressibility modulus K characterizing the nuclear matter equation of state.Comment: Typeset using ReVTeX, with 3 ps figs., uuencoded and appende

    Neutrons from multiplicity-selected Au-Au collisions at 150, 250, 400, and 650 AMeV

    We measured neutron triple-differential cross sections from multiplicity-selected Au-Au collisions at 150, 250, 400, and 650 \AMeV. The reaction plane for each collision was estimated from the summed transverse velocity vector of the charged fragments emitted in the collision. We examined the azimuthal distribution of the triple-differential cross sections as a function of the polar angle and the neutron rapidity. We extracted the average in--plane transverse momentum Px\langle P_x\rangle and the normalized observable Px/P\langle P_x/P_\perp\rangle, where PP_\perp is the neutron transverse momentum, as a function of the neutron center-of-mass rapidity, and we examined the dependence of these observables on beam energy. These collective flow observables for neutrons, which are consistent with those of protons plus bound nucleons from the Plastic Ball Group, agree with the Boltzmann--Uehling--Uhlenbeck (BUU) calculations with a momentum--dependent interaction.
