A review of modelling methodologies for flood source area (FSA) identification
Flooding is an important global hazard that causes an average annual loss of over 40 billion USD and affects a population of over 250 million globally. The complex process of flooding depends on spatial and temporal factors such as weather patterns, topography, and geomorphology. In urban environments where the landscape is ever-changing, spatial factors such as ground cover, green spaces, and drainage systems have a significant impact. Understanding source areas that have a major impact on flooding is, therefore, crucial for strategic flood risk management (FRM). Although flood source area (FSA) identification is not a new concept, its application is only recently being applied in flood modelling research. Continuous improvements in the technology and methodology related to flood models have enabled this research to move beyond traditional methods, such that, in recent years, modelling projects have looked beyond affected areas and recognised the need to address flooding at its source, to study its influence on overall flood risk. These modelling approaches are emerging in the field of FRM and propose innovative methodologies for flood risk mitigation and design implementation; however, they are relatively under-examined. In this paper, we present a review of the modelling approaches currently used to identify FSAs, i.e. unit flood response (UFR) and adaptation-driven approaches (ADA). We highlight their potential for use in adaptive decision making and outline the key challenges for the adoption of such approaches in FRM practises
Zastosownie hydrologicznego modelu o parametrach rozłożonych WetSpa w zlewni o znaczącym udziale gleb organicznych, na przykładzie górnej Biebrzy
The paper treats on hydrological distributed model adaptation for a catchment with significant contribution of wetland. The WetSpa model was applied to analyzing the effects of topography, soil type, and land use cover on the runoff characteristics for upper Biebrza catchment. The derivation of parameter maps and analysis of the daily runoff as reaction of the catchment on rainfall was performed. The semi-automated calibration of the model was executed using PEST module. Then, the assessment of that crucial processes was done by calculating errors of mathematical models performance as well as hydrograph comparison. Error values, have shown that the model efficiency was estimated to be good for high flows, but unsatisfactory for low flows. This initial modeling approach gives possibility to ask question about limitation and needs of wetland catchment for rainfall-runoff modeling. Do kalibracji wykorzystano procedurę półautomatyczną stosując program PEST. Następnie przeprowadzono ocenę najważniejszych procesów obliczając błędy modelowania matematycznego oraz porównując hydrogramy odpływu. Wielkości błędów pokazały wysoka skuteczność modelu w przypadku symulacji przepływów wysokich lecz niesatysfakcjonujące wyniki w obliczaniu przepływów niskich. Ta wstępna analiza dała możliwość zadania pytań o granice i potrzeby w modelowaniu opad- odpływ na obszarach mokradłowych
Analysis of use of satellite imagery for extraction of snow cover distribution as a parameter in a rainfall-runoff model
Analysis of use of satellite imagery for extraction of snow cover distribution as a parameter in a rainfall-runoff model.Interpolation of point measurements of meteorological variables in relatively big areas (eg. medium and big catchments) does not refl ect their real distribution. The study area is the upper Biebrza River catchment, meteorological data were recorded in a Rogorzynek station. This paper analyses possibilities of usage of a satellite data (MOD10A2, a spatial distribution of a snow cover) as a parameter in a hydrological model, which uses a day-degree method for a snowmelt estimation. The analysis shown a high correlation (0.68) between presence of a snow cover in a land surface station and in satellite data. Moreover, a strong linear relationship (correlation of 0.70) was found between a snow pack depth in the land surface station and an area of snow cover in the catchment estimated from satellite data. Geostatistical analysis of snow cover frequency in a pixel was made. A method of use a MOD10A2 data in a hydrological model was proposed.
Zaproponowano możliwość włączenia danych MOD10A2 do obliczeń modelu hydrologicznego

Naziemny skaning laserowy (TLS) jako technologia defekcji naturalnej mikrorzeźby doliny rzecznej na przykładzie górnej Biebrzy
This paper concerns the use of Terrestrial Laser
Scanning (TLS) methods and the Geographic Information
Systems (GIS) analysis to determine
microtopography of a natural river valley, case
study of the upper Biebrza valley. The scientific
problem analyzed in this paper is a morphology
of the selected segments of the valley covered
by sedge ecosystems which in natural stage form
a characteristic tussocks from their root systems.
In order to capture the microtopography it was
necessary to remove vegetation from the selected
areas, and then, for a five typical location, registration
of its structure using the laser scanner.
As a result the point cloud was generated for
each of the selected area and after GIS analysis
the microtopography was obtained in form of
digital terrain model (DTM). The DTM of each
area represents valleys microstructure possible to
obtain by use of TLS (TLS DTM), is usually not
registered by the Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS),
and is the main reason of inaccuracy of the DTM
obtained based on ALS. The resulting TLS DTM
has been processed by various filtering methods
to lower the noise and fi ll the voids from blocking
the laser beam by a tussocks. Finally, this allowed
to determine the spatial structure of each measurement
field.Niniejsza praca dotyczy wykorzystania metod

(z ang. GIS – Geographic Information Systems)
do określenia mikrorzeźby doliny rzecznej na
przykładzie fragmentu doliny górnej Biebrzy.
Pomiary TLS wykonano dla wybranych poletek
pomiarowych zlokalizowanych w obszarze
doliny, gdzie występują zbiorowiska turzyc kępowych,
których systemy korzeniowe tworzą
w połączeniu z namułami charakterystyczne pagórki.
Przed wykonaniem skaningu części liściowe
roślin zostały usunięte, aby odsłonić pagórki.
W wyniku przeprowadzenia skaningu otrzymano
DTM – Digital Terrain
Model). Na podstawie otrzymanych chmur
punktów wygenerowano NMT dla każdego z pól
pomiarowych. Otrzymany NMT został poddany
filtracji różnymi metodami w celu zmniejszenia
szumu oraz wypełnienia pustych miejsc modelu
powstałych na skutek blokowania wiązki lasera
przez kępy roślinności. Pozwoliło to określić
strukturę przestrzenna każdego analizowanego
poletka
