Neural network classification of questionable EGRET events
High energy gamma rays (greater than 20 MeV) pair producing in the spark chamber of the Energetic Gamma Ray Telescope Experiment (EGRET) give rise to a characteristic but highly variable 3-D locus of spark sites, which must be processed to decide whether the event is to be included in the database. A significant fraction (about 15 percent or 10(exp 4) events/day) of the candidate events cannot be categorized (accept/reject) by an automated rule-based procedure; they are therefore tagged, and must be examined and classified manually by a team of expert analysts. We describe a feedforward, back-propagation neural network approach to the classification of the questionable events. The algorithm computes a set of coefficients using representative exemplars drawn from the preclassified set of questionable events. These coefficients map a given input event into a decision vector that, ideally, describes the correct disposition of the event. The net's accuracy is then tested using a different subset of preclassified events. Preliminary results demonstrate the net's ability to correctly classify a large proportion of the events for some categories of questionables. Current work includes the use of much larger training sets to improve the accuracy of the net
Lunar nitrogen: Secular variation or mixing?
The two current models to explain the nearly 40% variation of the lunar nitrogen isotopic composition are: (1) secular variation of solar wind nitrogen; and (2) a two component mixing model having a constant, heavy solar wind admixed with varying amounts of indigenous light lunar N (LLN). Both models are needed to explain the step pyrolysis extraction profile. The secular variation model proposes that the low temperature release is modern day solar wind implanted into grain surfaces, the 900 C to 1100 C release is from grain surfaces which were once exposed to the ancient solar wind but which are now trapped inside agglutinates, and the >1100 C release as spallogenic N produced by cosmic rays. The mixing model ascribes the components to solar wind, indigenous lunar N and spallogenic N respectively. An extension of either interpretation is that the light N seen in lunar breccias or deep drill cores represent conditions when more N-14 was available to the lunar surface
Comment on "Self-Purification in Semiconductor Nanocrystals"
In a recent Letter [PRL 96, 226802 (2006)], Dalpian and Chelikowsky claimed
that formation energies of Mn impurities in CdSe nanocrystals increase as the
size of the nanocrystal decreases, and argued that this size dependence leads
to "self-purification" of small nanocrystals. They presented
density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations showing a strong size dependence
for Mn impurity formation energies, and proposed a general explanation. In this
Comment we show that several different DFT codes, pseudopotentials, and
exchange-correlation functionals give a markedly different result: We find no
such size dependence. More generally, we argue that formation energies are not
relevant to substitutional doping in most colloidally grown nanocrystals.Comment: 1 page, 1 figur

A tale of one city: intra-institutional variations in migrating VLE platform
City University London committed in 2009 to make Moodle the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) at the core of a new Strategic Learning Environment (SLE) comprised of VLE, externally facing website and related systems such as video streaming and virtual classrooms. Previously, the WebCT VLE had been separate from most of the other systems at the institution with very limited connections to other tools. Each of the schools within the institution was able to pursue their own strategy and timeframe for the migration and embedding of Moodle within their subject areas, within an absolute limit of 2 years. This paper outlines the approaches taken by the various schools, highlighting similarities and differences, and draws out common aspects from the project to make recommendations for institutions seeking to undertake similar migrations
Complex genome evolution in Anopheles coluzzii associated with increased insecticide usage in Mali.
In certain cases, a species may have access to important genetic variation present in a related species via adaptive introgression. These novel alleles may interact with their new genetic background, resulting in unexpected phenotypes. In this study, we describe a selective sweep on standing variation on the X chromosome in the mosquito Anopheles coluzzii, a principal malaria vector in West Africa. This event may have been influenced by the recent adaptive introgression of the insecticide resistance gene known as kdr from the sister species Anopheles gambiae. Individuals carrying both kdr and a nearly fixed X-linked haplotype, encompassing at least four genes including the P450 gene CYP9K1 and the cuticular protein CPR125, have rapidly increased in relative frequency. In parallel, a reproductively isolated insecticide-susceptible A. gambiae population (Bamako form) has been driven to local extinction, likely due to strong selection from increased insecticide-treated bed net usage
Astronomical Data Management
We present a summary of the major contributions to the Special Session on
Data Management held at the IAU General Assembly in Prague in 2006. While
recent years have seen enormous improvements in access to astronomical data,
and the Virtual Observatory aims to provide astronomers with seamless access to
on-line resources, more attention needs to be paid to ensuring the quality and
completeness of those resources. For example, data produced by telescopes are
not always made available to the astronomical community, and new instruments
are sometimes designed and built with insufficient planning for data
management, while older but valuable legacy data often remain undigitised. Data
and results published in journals do not always appear in the data centres, and
astronomers in developing countries sometimes have inadequate access to on-line
resources. To address these issues, an 'Astronomers Data Manifesto' has been
formulated with the aim of initiating a discussion that will lead to the

The Extended Methanol Maser Emission in W51
The European VLBI Network (EVN) has been used to make phase referenced,
wide-field (several arcminute) spectral line observations of the 6.7-GHz
methanol maser emission towards W51. In the W51main region, the bulk of the
methanol is offset from an UCHII region. This probably indicates the methanol
emission arises at the interface of the expanding UCHII region and not from an
edge-on circumstellar disc, as previously suggested. Near the W51 IRS2 region,
the methanol emission is associated with a very compact, extremely embedded
source supporting the hypothesis that methanol masers trace the earliest stages
of massive star formation. As well as these two previously well studied sites
of star formation, many previously unknown regions star formation are detected,
demonstrating that methanol masers are powerful means of detection young
