Indirect tests of the Randall-Sundrum model
I present phenomenological implications of the Randall-Sundrum model for
indirect searches, specifically a selection of flavor observables and
Higgs-related collider searches. I review the interplay of constraints from CP
violation in flavor physics, possible effects in rare decays, and
model-specific protection mechanisms. Deviations in the Higgs couplings to
fermions and, at one-loop, to gluons are unexpectedly strong and lead to strong
modifications in Higgs searches.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures; Talk given at Discrete '10: Symposium on

Testing Asteroseismic Radii of Dwarfs and Subgiants with Kepler and Gaia
We test asteroseismic radii of Kepler main-sequence and subgiant stars by
deriving their parallaxes which are compared with those of the first Gaia data
release. We compute radii based on the asteroseismic scaling relations as well
as by fitting observed oscillation frequencies to stellar models for a subset
of the sample, and test the impact of using effective temperatures from either
spectroscopy or the infrared flux method. An offset of 3%, showing no
dependency on any stellar parameters, is found between seismic parallaxes
derived from frequency modelling and those from Gaia. For parallaxes based on
radii from the scaling relations, a smaller offset is found on average;
however, the offset becomes temperature dependent which we interpret as
problems with the scaling relations at high stellar temperatures. Using the
hotter infrared flux method temperature scale, there is no indication that
radii from the scaling relations are inaccurate by more than about 5%. Taking
the radii and masses from the modelling of individual frequencies as reference
values, we seek to correct the scaling relations for the observed temperature
trend. This analysis indicates that the scaling relations systematically
overestimate radii and masses at high temperatures, and that they are accurate
to within 5% in radius and 13% in mass for main-sequence stars with
temperatures below 6400 K. However, further analysis is required to test the
validity of the corrections on a star-by-star basis and for more evolved stars.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA

Improving the entanglement transfer from continuous variable systems to localized qubits using non Gaussian states
We investigate the entanglement transfer from a bipartite continuous-variable
(CV) system to a pair of localized qubits assuming that each CV mode couples to
one qubit via the off-resonance Jaynes-Cummings interaction with different
interaction times for the two subsystems. First, we consider the case of the CV
system prepared in a Bell-like superposition and investigate the conditions for
maximum entanglement transfer. Then we analyze the general case of two-mode CV
states that can be represented by a Schmidt decomposition in the Fock number
basis. This class includes both Gaussian and non Gaussian CV states, as for
example twin-beam (TWB) and pair-coherent (TMC, also known as two-mode-coher
ent) states respectively. Under resonance conditions, equal interaction times
for both qubits and different initial preparations, we find that the
entanglement transfer is more efficient for TMC than for TWB states. In the
perspective of applications such as in cavity QED or with superconducting
qubits, we analyze in details the effects of off-resonance interactions
(detuning) and different interaction times for the two qubits, and discuss
conditions to preserve the entanglement transfer.Comment: revised version, 11 pages, 7 figures (few of them low-res
Constraints on Randall-Sundrum model from top-antitop production at the LHC
We study the top pair production cross section at the LHC in the context of
Randall-Sundrum model including the Kaluza-Klein (KK) excited gravitons. It is
shown that the recent measurement of the cross section of this process at the
LHC restricts the parameter space in Randall-Sundrum (RS) model considerably.
We show that the coupling parameter () is excluded by
this measurement from 0.03 to 0.22 depending on the mass of first KK excited
graviton (). We also study the effect of KK excitations on the spin
correlation of the top pairs. It is shown that the spin asymmetry in
events is sensitive to the RS model parameters with a reasonable choice of
model parameters.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure
Semiclassical model for calculating fully differential ionization cross sections of the H molecule
Fully differential cross sections are calculated for the ionization of H
by fast charged projectiles using a semiclassical model developed previously
for the ionization of atoms. The method is tested in case of 4 keV electron and
6 MeV proton projectiles. The obtained results show good agreement with the
available experimental data. Interference effects due to the two-center
character of the target are also observed and analyzed.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Bridge distress caused by approach embankment settlement
Surtees Bridge, which carries the A66(T) over the River
Tees near Thornaby-on-Tees in the UK, has been
showing signs of distress that predate its opening in
1981. Subsequent investigations have shown that the
bridge distress is related to unexpectedly large
settlement of the eastern approach embankment.
Recent ground investigations prompted by a proposed
widening of the river crossing have produced many new
data on the alluvial deposits underlying the site, and
explain why embankment settlement was so much larger
than originally anticipated. Comparison of the
geotechnical parameters obtained from the original and
more recent ground investigations suggests that the
original investigation significantly underestimated the
thickness of an alluvial clay layer underlying the site, and
that its coefficient of consolidation was overestimated.
Settlement analyses using geotechnical data from the
original ground investigations predict moderate
embankment settlements occurring principally during
construction. Settlement analyses based on all the
available data predict far larger embankment
settlements occurring over extended time periods. The
latter analyses predict an embankment settlement
similar to that observed and of sufficient magnitude to
cause the observed lateral displacement of the bridge
due to lateral loading of its piled foundation

Low-scale warped extra dimension and its predilection for multiple top quarks
Within warped extra dimension models that explain flavor through geometry,
flavor changing neutral current constraints generally force the Kaluza-Klein
scale to be above many TeV. This creates tension with a natural electroweak
scale. On the other hand, a much lower scale compatible with precision
electroweak and flavor changing neutral current constraints is allowed if we
decouple the Kaluza-Klein states of Standard Model gauge bosons from light
fermions bulk mass parameters). The main
signature for this approach is four top quark production via the Kaluza-Klein
excitations' strong coupling to top quarks. We study single lepton, like-sign
dilepton, and trilepton observables of four-top events at the Large Hadron
Collider. The like-sign dilepton signature typically has the largest discovery
potential for a strongly coupled right-handed top case (M_{KK} \sim 2-2.5
\TeV), while single lepton is the better when the left-handed top couples most
strongly (M_{KK} \sim 2 \TeV). We also describe challenging lepton-jet
collimation issues in the like-sign dilepton and trilepton channels. An
alternative single lepton observable is considered which takes advantage of the
many bottom quarks in the final state. Although searches of other particles may
compete, we find that four top production via Kaluza-Klein gluons is most
promising in a large region of this parameter space.Comment: 35 pages, 8 figures. discussions improved, references adde
