    Vibrational Exciton Density of States in Solid Benzene

    Computer‐aided calculations, based on experimentally‐fitted pairwise interaction terms, give the complete exciton density‐of‐states profile for the entire Brillouin zone. The restricted Frenkel model, with short‐range interactions, is the key assumption. Results are given and discussed for the out‐of‐plane a2ua2u normal mode ν11ν11(C6H6 and C6D6), for ν12(b1u)ν12(b1u), and for ν15(b2u)ν15(b2u). The wide range of parameters used makes this investigation pertinent to other vibrational and electronic exciton bands of benzene and any other molecular crystal with the same interchange symmetry. Also, Van Hove singularities are found to be more important for symmetry‐based critical points than for “accidental” critical points.     A Program of Astronomy Research on the Moon and Its Logistics Implications

    This study concerns itself with one aspect of possible post-Apollo space activity -- a program of astronomical research on the moon that culminates in the establishment of a lunar observatory. A mathematical model is utilized to analyze the logistics implications of conducting such an astronomical research program. The nature of the research equipment needed for the accomplishment of the program is outlined. Superposition of this research program upon a basic long-term lunar-base operations plan tentatively indicates that it could be feasible to conduct such a program of research during the 1970\u27s and 1980\u27s well within the constraints imposed by the logistics of presently planned spacecraft, boosters, and launching facilities. Although the best available numbers were used, the present study is viewed more as an exposition of a methodology than as the establishment of a conclusive result

    Paediatric biobanking: Dutch experts reflecting on appropriate legal standards for practice

    Large sets of data and human specimens, such as blood, tumour tissue and DNA, are deposited in biobanks for research purposes, preferably for long periods of time and with broadly defined research aims. Our research focuses on the retention of data and biological materials obtained from children. However important such paediatric biobanks may be, the privacy interests of the children involved and the related risks may not be ignored. The privacy issues arising from paediatric biobanks are the central focus of this article. We first review the international regulations that apply to biobanks and then summarise viewpoints expressed by experts in a round-table discussion. We confine ourselves here to two normative questions: (1) How much control should children's parents or legal representatives, and later the children themselves, have over the stored materials and data? (2) What should be done if research findings emerge that have serious implications for a child's health? On the basis of international legal standards and the views of experts, involved in paediatric biobanking, we argue that biological material of children may only be stored in a biobank for scientific purposes if parents provide their explicit consent, the child is re-contacted at 16 or 18 years of age to reconsider storage and use of its material, and the biobank maintains a limited policy in disclosure of individual research findings to the child's parents.     Nonlocal Aggregation Models: A Primer of Swarm Equilibria

    Biological aggregations such as fish schools, bird flocks, bacterial colonies, and insect swarms have characteristic morphologies governed by the group members\u27 intrinsic social interactions with each other and by their interactions with the external environment. Starting from a simple discrete model treating individual organisms as point particles, we derive a nonlocal partial differential equation describing the evolving population density of a continuum aggregation. To study equilibria and their stability, we use tools from the calculus of variations. In one spatial dimension, and for several choices of social forces, external forces, and domains, we find exact analytical expressions for the equilibria. These solutions agree closely with numerical simulations of the underlying discrete model. The analytical solutions provide a sampling of the wide variety of equilibrium configurations possible within our general swarm modeling framework, and include features such as spatial localization with compact support, mass concentrations, and discontinuous density jumps at the edge of the group. We apply our methods to a model of locust swarms, which in nature are observed to consist of a concentrated population on the ground separated from an airborne group. Our model can reproduce this configuration; in this case quasi-two-dimensionality of the locust swarm plays a critical role

    Dark matter concentration in the galactic center

    It is shown that the matter concentration observed through stellar motion at the galactic center (Eckart & Genzel, 1997, MNRAS, 284, 576 and Genzel et al., 1996, ApJ, 472, 153) is consistent with a supermassive object of 2.5×1062.5 \times 10^6 solar masses composed of self-gravitating, degenerate heavy neutrinos, as an alternative to the black hole interpretation. According to the observational data, the lower bounds on possible neutrino masses are mν≥12.0m_\nu \geq 12.0 keV/c2/c^2 for g=2g=2 or mν≥14.3m_\nu \geq 14.3 keV/c2/c^2 for g=1g=1, where gg is the spin degeneracy factor.     Chaos in effective classical and quantum dynamics

    We investigate the dynamics of classical and quantum N-component phi^4 oscillators in the presence of an external field. In the large N limit the effective dynamics is described by two-degree-of-freedom classical Hamiltonian systems. In the classical model we observe chaotic orbits for any value of the external field, while in the quantum case chaos is strongly suppressed. A simple explanation of this behaviour is found in the change in the structure of the orbits induced by quantum corrections. Consistently with Heisenberg's principle, quantum fluctuations are forced away from zero, removing in the effective quantum dynamics a hyperbolic fixed point that is a major source of chaos in the classical model.Comment: 6 pages, RevTeX, 5 figures, uses psfig, changed indroduction and conclusions, added reference

    Fishes of the Mfimi River in the central Congo basin of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kasai ecoregion or part of the Cuvette Centrale?

    Despite the cultural and economic importance of fisheries to communities in the region, the Mfimi is one of the least well-documented river systems in the central Congo basin. Here we present a preliminary listing of species collected during two surveys sampling 35 sites along the main channel, in major tributaries, and in some marginal habitats. A total of 2195 specimens representing 141 species were collected and archived at the American Museum of Natural History, New York, and in the teaching collections of the University of Kinshasa. Five species are considered as potentially new to science, and range extensions of numerous species into the Mfimi are recorded. Based on the data presented we conclude that the fish communities in the Mfimi share affinities with those of the Cuvette Centrale to the north, rather than the Kasai basin with which the river is currently connected via an inflow at the Kwa-Kasai junction

    Real-world outcomes of sipuleucel-T treatment in PROCEED, a prospective registry of men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.

    BackgroundThe large registry, PROVENGE Registry for the Observation, Collection, and Evaluation of Experience Data (PROCEED)(NCT01306890), evaluated sipuleucel-T immunotherapy for asymptomatic/minimally symptomatic metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC).MethodsPROCEED enrolled patients with mCRPC receiving 3 biweekly sipuleucel-T infusions. Assessments included overall survival (OS), serious adverse events (SAEs), cerebrovascular events (CVEs), and anticancer interventions (ACIs). Follow-up was for ≥3 years or until death or study withdrawal.ResultsIn 2011-2017, 1976 patients were followed for 46.6 months (median). The median age was 72 years, and the baseline median prostate-specific antigen level was 15.0 ng/mL; 86.7% were white, and 11.6% were African American. Among the patients, 1902 had 1 or more sipuleucel-T infusions. The median OS was 30.7 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 28.6-32.2 months). Known prognostic factors were independently associated with OS in a multivariable analysis. Among the 1255 patients who died, 964 (76.8%) died of prostate cancer (PC) progression. The median time from the first infusion to PC death was 42.7 months (95% CI, 39.4-46.2 months). The incidence of sipuleucel-T-related SAEs was 3.9%. The incidence of CVEs was 2.8%, and the rate per 100 person-years was 1.2 (95% CI, 0.9-1.6). The CVE incidence among 11,972 patients with mCRPC from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare database was 2.8%; the rate per 100 person-years was 1.5 (95% CI, 1.4-1.7). One or more ACIs (abiraterone, enzalutamide, docetaxel, cabazitaxel, or radium 223) were received by 77.1% of the patients after sipuleucel-T; 32.5% and 17.4% of the patients experienced 1- and 2-year treatment-free intervals, respectively.ConclusionsPROCEED provides contemporary survival data for sipuleucel-T-treated men in a real-world setting of new life-prolonging agents, which will be useful in discussing treatment options with patients and in powering future trials with sipuleucel-T. The safety and tolerability of sipuleucel-T in PROCEED were consistent with previous findings

    Integrated organic light-emitting device/fluorescence-based chemical sensors

    A fluorescent chemical sensor platform, integrating an organic light-emitting device (OLED) light-source with a fluorescent probe, is demonstrated for a subsecond-fast oxygen sensor. The integration results in strong light coupling and negligible heating of the sensor film or analyte. The potential in vivo operation of compact, stand-alone, battery-powered, OLED-based miniaturized sensor arrays for chemical and biological applications is discussed.
