Environmental protection of titanium alloys in centrifugal compressors at 500°C in saline atmosphere
The use of the titanium alloy Ti-6246 (Ti–6Al–2Sn–4Zr–6Mo, wt-%) for gas turbine compressors allows an increase in working temperature and stress level. Under severe service conditions, the material experiences combined high temperature and high mechanical stress and, in saline atmospheres, stress corrosion cracking (SCC) can occur, leading to catastrophic mechanical failure. The present study was performed to evaluate the potential of several surface treatments to protect Ti-6246 alloy, after salt deposit, from hot salt SCC at temperatures ?500°C and 500 MPa static mechanical stress conditions. Shot peening, thermal oxidation and metal–ceramic coatings were investigated. Experimental results confirm the existence of brittle stress corrosion phenomena marked by a low residual elongation of test samples and the presence of oxides on the fracture surfaces. Both shot peening and metal–ceramic coatings increase the hot salt SCC resistance of the alloy. Times to rupture were improved by a factor of 3 for shot peening and by a factor of 10 for metal–ceramic coatings. Inversely, the time to rupture of preoxidised alloys has been halved compared with uncoated alloys. As well as these interesting quantitative results, structural studies of metal–ceramic coatings showed that they are mechanically and chemically compatible with the titanium alloy substructure and should work under severe thermomechanical stresses and aggressive atmospheres
Simple atomic quantum memory suitable for semiconductor quantum dot single photons
Quantum memories matched to single photon sources will form an important
cornerstone of future quantum network technology. We demonstrate such a memory
in warm Rb vapor with on-demand storage and retrieval, based on
electromagnetically induced transparency. With an acceptance bandwidth of
= 0.66~GHz the memory is suitable for single photons emitted by
semiconductor quantum dots. In this regime, vapor cell memories offer an
excellent compromise between storage efficiency, storage time, noise level, and
experimental complexity, and atomic collisions have negligible influence on the
optical coherences. Operation of the memory is demonstrated using attenuated
laser pulses on the single photon level. For 50 ns storage time we measure
\emph{end-to-end efficiency}
of the fiber-coupled memory, with an \emph{total intrinsic efficiency}
. Straightforward technological improvements can
boost the end-to-end-efficiency to ; beyond
that increasing the optical depth and exploiting the Zeeman substructure of the
atoms will allow such a memory to approach near unity efficiency.
In the present memory, the unconditional readout noise level of photons is dominated by atomic fluorescence, and for input pulses
containing on average photons the signal to noise level would
be unity

Design of an alarm and risk management in chemistry. Some lessons learned from interdisciplinary research
International audienceIn this communication, we would like to contribute some elements from inderdisciplinary research whose purpose was to develop an aid system designed to prevent "chemical runaways" taking place along with their consequences at human level (death), environmental level (SEVESO type companies) and industrial level (destruction of installations). This project follows an inquiry we made into a chemical runaway in a nuclear plant in 1994. The accident was fatal for one operator. In this case, two hours before the explosion, the operators realised that something was wrong. The five operators tried to get out of the unit a few seconds before the explosion. This type of result (which was largely confirmed by other analyses) shows that process operators often think that the time they have before an explosion is more than it really is. Our aim was the design of a system that would warn operators of the arrival of a chemical runaway and would predict the time remaining until an imminent explosion
