    Vortex density fluctuations in quantum turbulence

    We compute the frequency spectrum of turbulent superfluid vortex density fluctuations and obtain the same Kolmogorov scaling which has been observed in a recent experiment in Helium-4. We show that the scaling can be interpreted in terms of the spectrum of reconnecting material lines. The calculation is performed using a vortex tree algorithm which considerably speeds up the evaluation of Biot-Savart integrals.Comment: 7 Pages, 7 figure

    Early warning signals in plant disease outbreaks

    Infectious disease outbreaks in plants threaten ecosystems, agricultural crops and food trade. Currently, several fungal diseases are affecting forests worldwide, posing a major risk to tree species, habitats and consequently ecosystem decay. Prediction and control of disease spread are difficult, mainly due to the complexity of the interaction between individual components involved. In this work, we introduce a lattice-based epidemic model coupled with a stochastic process that mimics, in a very simplified way, the interaction between the hosts and pathogen. We studied the disease spread by measuring the propagation velocity of the pathogen on the susceptible hosts. Our quantitative results indicate the occurrence of a critical transition between two stable phases: local confinement and an extended epiphytotic outbreak that depends on the density of the susceptible individuals. Quantitative predictions of epiphytotics are performed using the framework early-warning indicators for impending regime shifts, widely applied on dynamical systems. These signals forecast successfully the outcome of the critical shift between the two stable phases before the system enters the epiphytotic regime. Our study demonstrates that early-warning indicators could be useful for the prediction of forest disease epidemics through mathematical and computational models suited to more specific pathogen–host-environmental interactions. Our results may also be useful to identify a suitable planting density to slow down disease spread and in the future, design highly resilient forests

    Aspects of the Mass Distribution of Interstellar Dust Grains in the Solar System from In-Situ Measurements

    The in-situ detection of interstellar dust grains in the Solar System by the dust instruments on-board the Ulysses and Galileo spacecraft as well as the recent measurements of hyperbolic radar meteors give information on the properties of the interstellar solid particle population in the solar vicinity. Especially the distribution of grain masses is indicative of growth and destruction mechanisms that govern the grain evolution in the interstellar medium. The mass of an impacting dust grain is derived from its impact velocity and the amount of plasma generated by the impact. Because the initial velocity and the dynamics of interstellar particles in the Solar System are well known, we use an approximated theoretical instead of the measured impact velocity to derive the mass of interstellar grains from the Ulysses and Galileo in-situ data. The revised mass distributions are steeper and thus contain less large grains than the ones that use measured impact velocities, but large grains still contribute significantly to the overall mass of the detected grains. The flux of interstellar grains with masses >10−14kg> 10^{-14} {\rm kg} is determined to be 1⋅10−6m−2s−11\cdot 10^{-6} {\rm m}^{-2} {\rm s}^{-1}. The comparison of radar data with the extrapolation of the Ulysses and Galileo mass distribution indicates that the very large (m>10−10kgm > 10^{-10} {\rm kg}) hyperbolic meteoroids detected by the radar are not kinematically related to the interstellar dust population detected by the spacecraft.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, to appear in JG

    A further set of four text-based instant messaging (IM) products was evaluated: AT&T Anywhere, Parachat, Sonork, and Yahoo Messenger, all available at no cost. Yahoo Messenger was judged to be the most effective of the three products for use by distance education (DE) teachers and students, being compatible with most common operating systems and accommodating up to 50 chat room participants. Yahoo Messenger also possesses integrated audio and video capabilities. AT&T Anywhere is an efficient product, which supports Windows-based operating systems only. Parachat (Basic version) is a basic, browser accessed chat board without instant messaging (IM) capabilities

    Coherent laminar and turbulent motion of toroidal vortex bundles

    Motivated by experiments performed in superfluid helium, we study numerically the motion of toroidal bundles of vortex filaments in an inviscid fluid. We find that the evolution of these large-scale vortex structures involves the generalised leapfrogging of the constituent vortex rings. Despite three dimensional perturbations in the form of Kelvin waves and vortex reconnections, toroidal vortex bundles retain their coherence over a relatively large distance (compared to their size), in agreement with experimental observations.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figure

    Cross-sections of Andreev scattering by quantized vortex rings in 3He-B

    We studied numerically the Andreev scattering cross-sections of three-dimensional isolated quantized vortex rings in superfluid 3He-B at ultra-low temperatures. We calculated the dependence of the cross-section on the ring's size and on the angle between the beam of incident thermal quasiparticle excitations and the direction of the ring's motion. We also introduced, and investigated numerically, the cross-section averaged over all possible orientations of the vortex ring; such a cross-section may be particularly relevant for the analysis of experimental data. We also analyzed the role of screening effects for Andreev reflection of quasiparticles by systems of vortex rings. Using the results obtained for isolated rings we found that the screening factor for a system of unlinked rings depends strongly on the average radius of the vortex ring, and that the screening effects increase with decreasing the rings' size.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures ; submitted to Physical Review

    As a distance learning university, Universitas Terbuka (UT) uses mobile technology as an integral part of its online learning system. In addition to its mobile-interfacewebsite, online tutorials are also made accessible through mobile as well as handheld devices. In other words, UT students can literally study through their mobile devices from thevery first activity of registering for courses, paying the tuition fee, obtaining digital learning materials, accessing the digital library, reading online journals, as well as participating in online tutorials.With the continuous development of increasingly sophisticated smartphone technologies, it is important for UT to continuously improve its online learning system. The development of UT’s mobile learning, which was started in 2013, has gone through several phases. The first phase was the preparation of infrastructure, which includes the development of applications and frameworks. The second phase wasthe content development, which wasdone by the faculty using various media including text, audio, video, multimedia, and the utilisation of Open Education Resources (OER). The last and third phase wasthe program delivery, which involves tutors, technical/IT assistants, and other support systems to allow studentswith seamless accessto mobile learning using various mobile devices. This seems to be effective as shown by the data that demonstratesUT mobile learning is being accessed by students using different mobile devices with variousoperating systems.This chapter will give a glance on the state of practice of mobile learning in Indonesia as well as elaborate on the process and practice of mobile learning at Universitas Terbuka (The Indonesia Open University) as a dedicated distance learning university

    Locating the ‘radical’ in 'Shoot the Messenger'

The final published article is available from the link below, copyright 2013 @ Edinburgh University Press.The 2006 BBC drama Shoot the Messenger is based on the psychological journey of a Black schoolteacher, Joe Pascale, accused of assaulting a Black male pupil. The allegation triggers Joe's mental breakdown which is articulated, through Joe's first-person narration, as a vindictive loathing of Black people. In turn, a range of common stereotypical characterisations and discourses based on a Black culture of hypocrisy, blame and entitlement is presented. The text is therefore laid wide open to a critique of its neo-conservatism and hegemonic narratives of Black Britishness. However, the drama's presentation of Black mental illness suggests that Shoot the Messenger may also be interpreted as a critique of social inequality and the destabilising effects of living with ethnicised social categories. Through an analysis of issues of representation, the article reclaims this controversial text as a radical drama and examines its implications for and within a critical cultural politics of ‘race’ and representation

    Late life revision surgery for dilated colonic conduit in long gap oesophageal atresia

    Long gap oesophageal atresia presents a surgical challenge as there is insufficient length of the oesophagus to restore continuity. Oesophageal replacement is generally achieved using a conduit, taken from the stomach, jejunum or colon. Preferences of approach vary between and within surgical centres. Specific to colonic interposition, the continued growth and dilation of the interposed segment may lead to redundancy. Revision surgery in these cases is challenging and has been sparsely described in adult patients. We present two patients who had colonic interposition for long gap oesophageal atresia in infancy and who then underwent successful revision surgery in their fifth decade
