Electron Confinement, Orbital Ordering, and Orbital Moments in - Oxide Heterostructures
The (SrTiO)/(SrVO) multilayer system is studied
with first principles methods through the observed insulator-to-metal
transition with increasing thickness of the SrVO layer. When correlation
effects with reasonable magnitude are included, crystal field splittings from
the structural relaxations together with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) determines
the behavior of the electronic and magnetic structures. These confined slabs of
SrVO prefer =() orbital ordering of and
() orbitals within the plane, accompanied by
=(0,0) spin order (ferromagnetic alignment). The result is a
SOC-driven ferromagnetic Mott insulator. The orbital moment of 0.75
strongly compensates the spin moment on the sublattice. The
insulator-metal transition for (occurring between =4 and
=5) is reproduced. Unlike in the isoelectronic TiO/VO
(rutile structure) system and in spite of some similarities in orbital
ordering, no semi-Dirac point [{\it Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 102}, 166803 (2009)]
is encountered, but the insulator-to-metal transition occurs through a
different type of unusual phase. For n=5 this system is very near (or at) a
unique semimetallic state in which the Fermi energy is topologically determined
and the Fermi surface consists of identical electron and hole Fermi circles
centered at =0. The dispersion consists of what can be regarded as a
continuum of radially-directed Dirac points, forming a "Dirac circle".Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
Deaths certified as asthma and use of medical services: A national case-control study

Methods: A population based case-control study of asthma deaths in 1994–8 was performed in 22 English, six Scottish, and five Welsh health authorities/boards. All 681 subjects who died were under the age of 65 years with asthma in Part I on the death certificates. After exclusions, 532 hospital controls were matched to 532 cases for age, district, and date of asthma admission/death. Data were extracted blind from primary care records.
Results: The median age of the subjects who died was 53 years; 60% of cases and 64% of controls were female. There was little difference in outpatient attendance (55% and 55%), hospital admission for asthma (51% and 54%), and median inpatient days (20 days and 15 days) in the previous 5 years. After mutual adjustment and adjustment for sex, using conditional logistic regression, three variables were independently associated with asthma death: fewer general practice contacts (odds ratio 0.82 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.74 to 0.91) per 5 contacts) in the previous year, more home visits (1.14 (95% CI 1.08 to 1.21) per visit) in the previous year, and fewer peak expiratory flow recordings (0.83 (95% CI 0.74 to 0.92) per occasion) in the previous 3 months. These associations were similar after adjustment for markers of severity, psychosocial factors, systemic steroids, short acting bronchodilators and antibiotics, although the association with peak flow was weakened and just lost significance.
Conclusion: Asthma death is associated with less use of primary care services. Both practice and patient factors may be involved and a better understanding of these may offer possibilities for reducing asthma death.This study was funded jointly between the National Research and Development Asthma Management Programme (contract number AM1/

Negative Link Prediction in Social Media
Signed network analysis has attracted increasing attention in recent years.
This is in part because research on signed network analysis suggests that
negative links have added value in the analytical process. A major impediment
in their effective use is that most social media sites do not enable users to
specify them explicitly. In other words, a gap exists between the importance of
negative links and their availability in real data sets. Therefore, it is
natural to explore whether one can predict negative links automatically from
the commonly available social network data. In this paper, we investigate the
novel problem of negative link prediction with only positive links and
content-centric interactions in social media. We make a number of important
observations about negative links, and propose a principled framework NeLP,
which can exploit positive links and content-centric interactions to predict
negative links. Our experimental results on real-world social networks
demonstrate that the proposed NeLP framework can accurately predict negative
links with positive links and content-centric interactions. Our detailed
experiments also illustrate the relative importance of various factors to the
effectiveness of the proposed framework

Helicopter mathematical models and control law development for handling qualities research
Progress made in joint NASA/Army research concerning rotorcraft flight-dynamics modeling, design methodologies for rotorcraft flight-control laws, and rotorcraft parameter identification is reviewed. Research into these interactive disciplines is needed to develop the analytical tools necessary to conduct flying qualities investigations using both the ground-based and in-flight simulators, and to permit an efficient means of performing flight test evaluation of rotorcraft flying qualities for specification compliance. The need for the research is particularly acute for rotorcraft because of their mathematical complexity, high order dynamic characteristics, and demanding mission requirements. The research in rotorcraft flight-dynamics modeling is pursued along two general directions: generic nonlinear models and nonlinear models for specific rotorcraft. In addition, linear models are generated that extend their utilization from 1-g flight to high-g maneuvers and expand their frequency range of validity for the design analysis of high-gain flight control systems. A variety of methods ranging from classical frequency-domain approaches to modern time-domain control methodology that are used in the design of rotorcraft flight control laws is reviewed. Also reviewed is a study conducted to investigate the design details associated with high-gain, digital flight control systems for combat rotorcraft. Parameter identification techniques developed for rotorcraft applications are reviewed
Isoperimetric Inequalities for Minimal Submanifolds in Riemannian Manifolds: A Counterexample in Higher Codimension
For compact Riemannian manifolds with convex boundary, B.White proved the
following alternative: Either there is an isoperimetric inequality for minimal
hypersurfaces or there exists a closed minimal hypersurface, possibly with a
small singular set. There is the natural question if a similar result is true
for submanifolds of higher codimension. Specifically, B.White asked if the
non-existence of an isoperimetric inequality for k-varifolds implies the
existence of a nonzero, stationary, integral k-varifold. We present examples
showing that this is not true in codimension greater than two. The key step is
the construction of a Riemannian metric on the closed four-dimensional ball B
with the following properties: (1) B has strictly convex boundary. (2) There
exists a complete nonconstant geodesic. (3) There does not exist a closed

Targeted Derepression of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Long Terminal Repeat by Pyrrole-Imidazole Polyamides
The host factor LSF represses the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 long terminal repeat (LTR) by mediating recruitment of histone deacetylase. We show that pyrrole-imidazole polyamides targeted to the LTR can specifically block LSF binding both in vitro and within cells via direct access to chromatin, resulting in increased LTR expression
The counter-streaming instability in dwarf ellipticals with off-center nuclei
n many nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxies (dE,N's), the nucleus is offset by
a significant fraction of the scale radius with respect to the center of the
outer isophotes. Using a high-resolution N-body simulation, we demonstrate that
the nucleus can be driven off-center by the m=1 counterstreaming instability,
which is strong in flattened stellar systems with zero rotation. The model
develops a nuclear offset on the order of 30% of the exponential scale length.
We compare our numerical results with the photometry and kinematics of FCC 046,
a Fornax Cluster dE,N with a nucleus offset by 1.2" we find good agreement
between the model and FCC 046. We also discuss mechanisms that may cause
counterrotation in dE,N's and conclude that the destruction of box orbits in an
initially triaxial galaxy is the most promising.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Colour Relations in Form
The orthodox monadic determination thesis holds that we represent colour relations by virtue of representing colours. Against this orthodoxy, I argue that it is possible to represent colour relations without representing any colours. I present a model of iconic perceptual content that allows for such primitive relational colour representation, and provide four empirical arguments in its support. I close by surveying alternative views of the relationship between monadic and relational colour representation
