Triggered massive-star formation on the borders of Galactic HII regions. III. Star formation at the periphery of Sh2-219
Context. Massive-star formation triggered by the expansion of HII regions.
Aims. To understand if sequential star formation is taking place at the
periphery of the HII region Sh2-219. Methods. We present 12CO(2-1) line
observations of this region, obtained at the IRAM 30-m telescope (Pico Veleta,
Spain). Results. In the optical, Sh2-219 is spherically symmetric around its
exciting star; furthermore it is surrounded along three quarters of its
periphery by a ring of atomic hydrogen. This spherical symmetry breaks down at
infrared and millimetre wavelengths. A molecular cloud of about 2000\msol lies
at the southwestern border of Sh2-219, in the HI gap. Two molecular
condensations, elongated along the ionization front, probably result from the
interaction between the expanding HII region and the molecular cloud. In this
region of interaction there lies a cluster containing many highly reddened
stars, as well as a massive star exciting an ultracompact HII region. More
surprisingly, the brightest parts of the molecular cloud form a `chimney',
perpendicular to the ionization front. This chimney is closed at its south-west
extremity by H-alpha walls, thus forming a cavity. The whole structure is 7.5
pc long. A luminous H-alpha emission-line star, lying at one end of the chimney
near the ionization front, may be responsible for this structure. Confrontation
of the observations with models of HII region evolution shows that Sh2-219 is
probably 10^5 yr old. The age and origin of the near-IR cluster observed on the
border of Sh2-219 remain unknown.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures. To be published in A&
Anomalous Noise in the Pseudogap Regime of YBaCuO
An unusual noise component is found near and below about 250 K in the normal
state of underdoped YBCO and Ca-YBCO films. This noise regime, unlike the more
typical noise above 250 K, has features expected for a symmetry-breaking
collective electronic state. These include large individual fluctuators, a
magnetic sensitivity, and aging effects. A possible interpretation in terms of
fluctuating charge nematic order is presented.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
ROSAT and ASCA observations of the Crab-Like Supernova Remnant N157B in the Large Magellanic Cloud
We report the results of ROSAT and ASCA X-ray observations of the supernova
remnant N157B (or 30 Dor B, SNR 0539-69.1) in the Large Magellanic Cloud. For
comparison, we also briefly describe the results on SNR 0540-69.3, the only
confirmed Crab-like remnant in the Cloud. The X-ray emission from N157B can be
decomposed into a bright comet-shaped feature, superimposed on a diffuse
emission region of a dimension pc. The flat and nearly featureless
spectrum of the remnant is distinctly different from those of young shell-like
remnants, suggesting a predominantly Crab-like nature of N157B. Characterized
by a power law with an energy slope , the spectrum of N157B above
keV is, however, considerably steeper than that of SNR 0540-69.3,
which has a slope of . At lower energies, the spectrum of N157B
presents marginal evidence for emission lines, which if real most likely arise
in hot gas of the diffuse emission region. The hot gas has a characteristic
thermal temperature of 0.4-0.7 keV. No significant periodic signal is detected
from N157B in the period range of s. The pulsed
fraction is (99% confidence) in the keV range. We discuss
the nature of the individual X-ray components. In particular, we suggest that
the synchrotron radiation of relativistic particles from a fast-moving () pulsar explains the size, morphology, spectrum, and energetics
of the comet-shaped X-ray feature. We infer the age of the remnant as yrs. The lack of radio polarization of the remnant may be due to
Faraday dispersion by foreground \ion{H}{2} gas.Comment: To be published in The Astrophysical Journal, 21 pages, plus 11

Diffuse Ionized Gas in the Dwarf Irregular Galaxy DDO 53
The spectral characteristics throughout the dwarf irregular galaxy DDO 53 are
studied. The results are very similar to those for other irregular galaxies:
high excitation and low values of the [SII]/Halpha ratio. The most likely
ionization source is photon leakage from the classical HII regions, without any
other source, although the interstellar medium of the galaxy is quite
perturbed. Moreover, the physical conditions throughout the galaxy do not
change very much because both the photon leakage percentage and the ionization
temperature are very similar. In addition, the determined metal content for two
HII regions indicates that DDO 53 is a low-metallicity galaxy.Comment: 32 pages, 9 figures, 7 tables. AJ, in pres
Optical Spectral Signatures of Dusty Starburst Galaxies
We analyse the optical spectral properties of the complete sample of Very
Luminous Infrared Galaxies presented by Wu et al. (1998a,b) and we find a high
fraction (~50 %) of spectra showing both a strong H_delta line in absorption
and relatively modest [OII] emission (e(a) spectra). The e(a) signature has
been proposed as an efficient method to identify dusty starburst galaxies and
we study the star formation activity and the nature of these galaxies, as well
as the effects of dust on their observed properties. We examine their emission
line characteristics, in particular their [OII]/H_alpha ratio, and we find this
to be greatly affected by reddening. A search for AGN spectral signatures
reveals that the e(a)'s are typically HII/LINER galaxies. We compare the star
formation rates derived from the FIR luminosities with the estimates based on
the H_alpha line and find that the values obtained from the optical emission
lines are a factor of 10-70 (H_alpha) and 20-140 ([OII]) lower than the FIR
estimates (50-300 M_sun yr^-1). We then study the morphological properties of
the e(a) galaxies, looking for a near companion or signs of a
merger/interaction. In order to explore the evolution of the e(a) population,
we present an overview of the available observations of e(a)'s in different
environments both at low and high redshift. Finally, we discuss the role of
dust in determining the e(a) spectral properties and we propose a scenario of
selective obscuration in which the extinction decreases with the stellar age.Comment: 26 pages, Latex, including 7 postscript figures, accepted for

The Radio Continuum of the Metal-Deficient Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxy SBS0335-052
We present new Very Large Array observations at five frequencies, from 1.4 to
22GHz, of the extremely low-metallicity blue compact dwarf SBS0335-052. The
radio spectrum shows considerable absorption at 1.49GHz, and a composite
thermal+non-thermal slope. After fitting the data with a variety of models, we
find the best-fitting geometry to be one with free-free absorption
homogeneously intermixed with the emission of both thermal and non-thermal
components. The best-fitting model gives an an emission measure EM ~ 8x10^7pc
cm^{-6} and a diameter of the radio-emitting region D ~17pc. The inferred
density is n_e ~ 2000 cm^{-3}. The thermal emission comes from an ensemble of
\~9000 O7 stars, with a massive star-formation rate (>=5Msun) of 0.13-0.15
yr^{-1}, and a supernova rate of 0.006 yr^{-1}. We find evidence for ionized
gas emission from stellar winds, since the observed Bralpha line flux
significantly exceeds that inferred from the thermal radio emission. The
non-thermal fraction at 5GHz is ~0.7, corresponding to a non-thermal luminosity
of ~2x10^{20} W Hz^{-1}. We attribute the non-thermal radio emission to an
ensemble of compact SN remnants expanding in a dense interstellar medium, and
derive an equipartition magnetic field of ~0.6-1 mG, and a pressure of
\~3x10^{-8}-1x10^{-7} dyne cm^{-2}. If the radio properties of SBS0335-052 are
representative of star formation in extremely low-metallicity environments,
derivations of the star formation rate from the radio continuum in high
redshift primordial galaxies need to be reconsidered. Moreover, photometric
redshifts inferred from ``standard'' spectral energy distributions could be
incorrect.Comment: 25 pages, including 3 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
A Test of Interventions to Increase Adherence to Hypertensive Medical Regimens
Low rates of adherence to hypertensive therapy limit patients' securing the full benefits of treatment. While some factors related to adherence have been identified, research on the effectiveness of interventions to increase adherence levels is sparse. The present study was designed to assess the impact of a series of different interventions on a group of some 400 patients, all under the care of private physicians in a small community. A factorial design was employed to deliver four, sequential educational interventions, about four months apart, to randomly selected sub-groups. Interviews before and after each intervention provided information concerning self-reported adherence, health status, health beliefs, and personal characteristics. Pertinent medical records and pharmacy data were also obtained. The first intervention—printed material—did not significantly affect adherence. The second and fourth interventions—nurse telephone calls and social support—each increased medication taking and the third intervention—self-monitoring—led to better weight control. There was no cumulative impact of the interventions and different aspects of regimens were not signiticantly related to one another.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/67164/2/10.1177_109019818100800303.pd
Virgin River multi-objective optimization: maximizing endangered fish habitat and minimizing costs
This paper discusses a comparative analysis of hypothetical operational scenarios by the use of dynamic temperature and fish habitat modelling in a multi-objective framework in the Virgin River Basin, Utah. Results were compared on the basis of quantified fish habitat, operational costs, and hydropower revenue. The modelling framework, the Virgin River Operation Optimization Model, is considered as a basin-level planning model. The optimization objectives were to minimize net river system operational cost of the Washington County Water Conservation District and maximize endangered fish habitat. Considerations included infrastructure alternatives to increase flow and cold water discharges as well as demand reductions. Given the nature of the problem, an optimization procedure was developed to approximate a Pareto front or trade-off surface for the two management objectives. This trade-off surface approximation is desired to help users compare the merits of any particular solution. The relative differences between alternatives elucidated sensitivities to the system responses along the approximated Pareto front. Limitations to the methods are discussed and recommendations for future work are provided
