Density-Matrix Algorithm for Phonon Hilbert Space Reduction in the Numerical Diagonalization of Quantum Many-Body Systems
Combining density-matrix and Lanczos algorithms we propose a new optimized
phonon approach for finite-cluster diagonalizations of interacting
electron-phonon systems. To illustrate the efficiency and reliability of our
method, we investigate the problem of bipolaron band formation in the extended

Impaired visual short-term memory capacity is distinctively associated with structural connectivity of the posterior thalamic radiation and the splenium of the corpus callosum in preterm-born adults
Preterm birth is associated with an increased risk for lasting changes in both the cortico-thalamic system and attention; however, the link between cortico-thalamic and attention changes is as yet little understood. In preterm newborns, cortico-cortical and cortico-thalamic structural connectivity are distinctively altered, with increased local clustering for cortico-cortical and decreased integrity for cortico-thalamic connectivity. In preterm-born adults, among the various attention functions, visual short-term memory (vSTM) capacity is selectively impaired. We hypothesized distinct associations between vSTM capacity and the structural integrity of cortico-thalamic and cortico-cortical connections, respectively, in preterm-born adults. A whole-report paradigm of briefly presented letter arrays based on the computationally formalized Theory of Visual Attention (TVA) was used to quantify parameter vSTM capacity in 26 preterm- and 21 full-term-born adults. Fractional anisotropy (FA) of posterior thalamic radiations and the splenium of the corpus callosum obtained by diffusion tensor imaging were analyzed by tract-based spatial statistics and used as proxies for cortico-thalamic and cortico-cortical structural connectivity. The relationship between vSTM capacity and cortico-thalamic and cortico-cortical connectivity, respectively, was significantly modified by prematurity. In full-term-born adults, the higher FA in the right posterior thalamic radiation the higher vSTM capacity; in preterm-born adults this FA-vSTM-relationship was inversed. In the splenium, higher FA was correlated with higher vSTM capacity in preterm-born adults, whereas no significant relationship was evident in full-term-born adults. These results indicate distinct associations between cortico-thalamic and cortico-cortical integrity and vSTM capacity in preterm-and full-term-born adults. Considerations on the quantum double-exchange Hamiltonian
Schwinger bosons allow for an advantageous representation of quantum
double-exchange. We review this subject, comment on previous results, and
address the transition to the semiclassical limit. We derive an effective
fermionic Hamiltonian for the spin-dependent hopping of holes interacting with
a background of local spins, which is used in a related publication within a

Peierls Dimerization with Non-Adiabatic Spin-Phonon Coupling
We study the magnetic properties of a frustrated Heisenberg spin chain with a
dynamic spin-phonon interaction. By Lanczos diagonalization, preserving the
full lattice dynamics, we explore the non-adiabatic regime with phonon
frequencies comparable to the exchange coupling energy which is e.g. the
relevant limit for the spin-Peierls compound . When compared to the
static limit of an alternating spin chain the magnetic properties are strongly
renormalized due to the coupled dynamics of spin and lattice degrees of
freedom. The magnitude of the spin triplet excitation gap changes from a strong
to a weak dimerization dependence with increasing phonon frequencies implying
the necessity to include dynamic effects in an attempt for a quantitative

wird nicht so deutlich unterschieden, wie aufgrund der Skalen möglich. In zwei experimentellen Studien zu unterschiedlichen Meinungsgegenständen werden in
der Literatur diskutierte Verfahren zur Reduzierung der Nondifferentiation zusammen mit einem hierfür bisher nicht verwendeten Verfahren (konstante Summe, KS) hinsichtlich ihres Einflusses auf Nondifferentiation verglichen. Eine erste Studie (N = 139) belegt eine signifikant erhöhte Differenzierung bei KS im Vergleich zu einem verbalen Einschub. Für eine zweite Studie werden in einer Voruntersuchung (N = 138) stark positiv und stark negativ eingeschätzte Meinungsgegenstände ausgewählt, die in der anschließenden Hauptuntersuchung (N = 200) ohne Messwiederholung bewertet werden. Hierbei werden insgesamt 3 verschiedene Verfahren zur Verbesserung der Differenzierung verwendet und einem rein verbalen Einschub gegenübergestellt. Auch hierbei erweist sich die KS generell als das Verfahren, das die höchste Differenzierung bewirkt
Reduced cholinergic basal forebrain integrity links neonatal complications and adult cognitive deficits after premature birth
Background
Premature-born individuals have an increased risk for long-term neurocognitive impairments. In animal models, the development of the cholinergic basal forebrain (cBF) is selectively vulnerable to adverse effects of perinatal stressors, and impaired cBF integrity results in lasting cognitive deficits. We hypothesized that in premature-born individuals cBF integrity is impaired and mediates adult cognitive impairments associated with prematurity.
Methods
We used MRI-based volumetric assessments of a cytoarchitectonically defined cBF region-of-interest to determine differences in cBF integrity between 99 adults who were born very preterm and/or with very low birth weight (VP/VLBW) and 106 term born controls from the same birth cohort. MRI-derived cBF volumes were studied in relation to neonatal clinical complications after delivery as well as intelligence measures (IQ) in adulthood.
Results
In VP/VLBW adults, cBF volumes were significantly reduced compared to term-born adults (-4.5%, F(1, 202) = 11.82, p = 0.001). Lower cBF volume in VP/VLBW adults was specifically associated with both neonatal complications (rpart(92) = -0.35, p < 0.001) and adult IQ (rpart(88) = 0.33, p = 0.001) even after controlling for global gray matter and white matter volume. In an additional path analytic model, cBF volume significantly mediated the association between neonatal complications and adult cognitive deficits.
Conclusions
Results provide first time evidence in humans that cBF integrity is impaired after premature birth and links neonatal complications with long-term cognitive outcome. Data suggest that cholinergic system abnormalities may play a relevant role for long-term neurocognitive impairments associated with premature delivery
Mid-Infrared Conductivity from Mid-Gap States Associated with Charge Stripes
The optical conductivity of La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4) has been interpreted in
various ways, but so far the proposed interpretations have neglected the fact
that the holes doped into the NiO(2) planes order in diagonal stripes, as
established by neutron and X-ray scattering. Here we present a study of optical
conductivity in La(2)NiO(4+d) with d=2/15, a material in which the charge
stripes order three-dimensionally. We show that the conductivity can be
decomposed into two components, a mid-infrared peak that we attribute to
transitions from the filled valence band into empty mid-gap states associated
with the stripes, and a Drude peak that appears at higher temperatures as
carriers are thermally excited into the mid-gap states. The shift of the mid-IR
peak to lower energy with increasing temperature is explained in terms of the
Franck-Condon effect. The relevance of these results to understanding the

A Model to Define an eHealth Technological Ecosystem for Caregivers
The ageing of world population has a direct impact on the health and care systems, as it means an increase in the number of people needing care which leads to higher care costs and the need for more resources. In this context, informal caregivers play an important role as they enable dependent persons to stay at home and thus reduce care costs. However, long-term continuous care provision has also an impact in the physical and mental health of the caregivers. Moreover, geographical barriers make it difficult for caregivers to accessing psychoeducation as a way to alleviate their problems. To support caregivers in their needs and provide specialized training, technology plays a fundamental role. The present work provides the theoretical basis for the development of a technological ecosystem focused on learning and knowledge management processes to develop and enhance the caregiving competences of formal and informal caregivers, both at home and in care environments. In particular, a platform-specific model to
support the definition of the ecosystem based on Open Source software components is presented, along with a Business Model Canvas to define the business structure as part of the human elements of the technological ecosystem
