Understanding the role of P2X7 in affective disordersâare glial cells the major players?
Pathophysiology associated with several psychiatric disorders has been linked to inflammatory biomarkers. This has generated a theory of major depressive disorders as an inflammatory disease. The idea of pro-inflammatory cytokines altering behavior is now well accepted however many questions remain. Microglia can produce a plethora of inflammatory cytokines and these cells appear to be critical in the link between inflammatory changes and depressive disorders. Microglia play a known role in sickness behavior which has many components of depressive-like behavior such as social withdrawal, sleep alterations, and anorexia. Numerous candidate genes have been identified for psychiatric disorders in the last decade. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the human P2X7 gene have been linked to bipolar disorder, depression, and to the severity of depressive symptoms. P2X7 is a ligand-gated cation channel expressed on microglia with lower levels found on astrocytes and on some neuronal populations. In microglia P2X7 is a major regulator of pro-inflammatory cytokines of the interleukin-1 family. Genetic deletion of P2X7 in mice is protective for depressive behavior in addition to inflammatory responses. P2X7â/â mice have been shown to demonstrate anti-depressive-like behavior in forced swim and tail suspension behavioral tests and stressor-induced behavioral responses were blunted. Both neurochemical (norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine) and inflammatory changes have been observed in the brains of P2X7â/â mice. This review will discuss the recent evidence for involvement of P2X7 in the pathophysiology of depressive disorders and propose mechanisms by which altered signaling through this ion channel may affect the inflammatory state of the brain

How Peclet number affects microstructure and transient cluster aggregation in sedimenting colloidal suspensions
We study how varying the P \'eclet number (Pe) affects the steady state
sedimentation of colloidal particles that interact through short-ranged
attractions. By employing a hybrid molecular dynamics simulation method we
demonstrate that the average sedimentation velocity changes from a non-
monotonic dependence on packing fraction {\phi} at low Pe numbers, to a
monotonic decrease with {\phi} at higher Pe numbers. At low Pe number the pair
correlation functions are close to their equilibrium values, but as the Pe
number increases, important deviations from equilibrium forms are observed.
Although the attractive forces we employ are not strong enough to form
permanent clusters, they do induce transient clusters whose behaviour is also
affected by Pe number. In particular, clusters are more likely to fragment and
less likely to aggregate at larger Pe numbers, and the probability of finding
larger clusters decreases with increasing Pe number. Interestingly, the
life-time of the clusters is more or less independent of Pe number in the range
we study. Instead, the change in cluster distribution occurs because larger
clusters are less likely to form with increasing Pe number. These results
illustrate some of the subtleties that occur in the crossover from equilibrium
like to purely non-equilibrium behaviour as the balance between convective and
thermal forces changes.Comment: 8 page
Analytical modeling of the structureborne noise path on a small twin-engine aircraft
The structureborne noise path of a six passenger twin-engine aircraft is analyzed. Models of the wing and fuselage structures as well as the interior acoustic space of the cabin are developed and used to evaluate sensitivity to structural and acoustic parameters. Different modeling approaches are used to examine aspects of the structureborne path. These approaches are guided by a number of considerations including the geometry of the structures, the frequency range of interest, and the tractability of the computations. Results of these approaches are compared with experimental data

Worker wellbeing and workplace performance
Employee wellbeing is increasingly a focus of government attention in the UK and elsewhere. It is viewed as a legitimate target of government policy in its own right, but there are also reasons to think that improvements in employees' wellbeing may be conducive to economic growth. This paper focuses on the subjective wellbeing of employees and its potential impact on workplace performance. As yet there is relatively little empirical evidence on the relationship between employees' subjective wellbeing and workplace performance. This paper begins to fill that gap for Britain

How much performance pay is there in the public sector and what are its effects?
Theory suggests that performance pay (PP) can align employees' interests with those of the employer and attract highâability workers and incentivise effort but that it may be less effective in the public sector. However, empirical evidence on its incidence and effects is largely confined to the private sector. We find that half the 20 percentage point gap in PP incidence in Britain between the public and private sectors is accounted for by differences in occupational composition. The gap falls to 8 percentage points when âmatchingâ employees in both sectors on their demographic and job characteristics. PP is linked to positive job attitudes among private sector employees, but not among observationally equivalent public sector employees. Furthermore, PP is negatively correlated with workplace performance in the public sector. These findings raise important questions about public policies promoting PP in the public sector

Are firms paying more for performance?
Purpose
â The purpose of this paper is to investigate changes in the economic importance of performance-related-pay (PRP) in Britain through the 2000s using firm-level data.
Design/methodology/approach
â The authors utilise nationally representative, monthly data on the total wage bill and employment of around 8,500 firms. Using these data, the authors decompose the share of the total economy-wide wage bill accounted for by bonuses into the shares of employment in the PRP and non-PRP sectors, the ratio of base pay between the two sectors, and the gearing of bonus payments to base pay within the PRP sector.
Findings
â The growth in the economic importance of bonuses in Britain in the mid-2000s â and subsequent fluctuations since the onset of recession in 2008 â can be almost entirely explained by changes in the gearing of bonus to base pay within the PRP sector. There has been no substantial change in the percentage of employment accounted for by PRP firms; if anything it has fallen over time. Furthermore, movements in the gearing of bonuses to base pay in the economy are heavily influenced by changes in Finance: a sector which accounts for a large proportion of all bonus payments in Britain.
Research limitations/implications
â The paper demonstrates the importance of understanding further how firms decide the size of bonus payments in a given period.
Originality/value
â This is the first paper to present monthly firm-level data for Britain on the incidence and size of bonus payments in the 2000s
