Measurement of surface velocity fields
A new technique for measuring surface velocity fields is briefly described. It determines the surface velocity vector as a function of location and time by the analysis of thermal fluctuations of the surface profile in a small domain around the point of interest. The apparatus now being constructed will be used in a series of experiments involving flow fields established by temperature gradients imposed along a surface
Sub-Planckian black holes and the Generalized Uncertainty Principle
The Black Hole Uncertainty Principle correspondence suggests that there could
exist black holes with mass beneath the Planck scale but radius of order the
Compton scale rather than Schwarzschild scale. We present a modified, self-dual
Schwarzschild-like metric that reproduces desirable aspects of a variety of
disparate models in the sub-Planckian limit, while remaining Schwarzschild in
the large mass limit. The self-dual nature of this solution under naturally implies a Generalized Uncertainty Principle
with the linear form . We also
demonstrate a natural dimensional reduction feature, in that the gravitational
radius and thermodynamics of sub-Planckian objects resemble that of -D
gravity. The temperature of sub-Planckian black holes scales as rather than
but the evaporation of those smaller than g is suppressed by
the cosmic background radiation. This suggests that relics of this mass could
provide the dark matter.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, version published in J. High En. Phy
Hybrid Reflection-transmission Surface Light-scattering Instrument with Reduced Sensitivity to Surface Sloshing
A hybrid reflection-transmission surface light-scattering instrumental design is presented, examined theoretically, and tested experimentally. The purpose of the design is to reduce the sensitivity of the instrument to vibration in general and surface sloshing in particular while sacrificing Little performance. Traditional optical arrangements and two new optical configurations with varying trade-offs between slosh resistance and instrumental simplicity and accuracy are examined by use of Fourier optics methods. The most promising design was constructed and tested with acetone, ethanol, and water as subject fluids. The test involved backcalculation of the wave number of the capillary wave examined with the known physical parameters for the test fluids. The agreement of the computed wave number was +/-1.4%. Phenomenology and Cosmology of an Electroweak Pseudo-Dilaton and Electroweak Baryons
In many strongly-interacting models of electroweak symmetry breaking the
lowest-lying observable particle is a pseudo-Goldstone boson of approximate
scale symmetry, the pseudo-dilaton. Its interactions with Standard Model
particles can be described using a low-energy effective nonlinear chiral
Lagrangian supplemented by terms that restore approximate scale symmetry,
yielding couplings of the pseudo-dilaton that differ from those of a Standard
Model Higgs boson by fixed factors. We review the experimental constraints on
such a pseudo-dilaton in light of new data from the LHC and elsewhere. The
effective nonlinear chiral Lagrangian has Skyrmion solutions that may be
identified with the `electroweak baryons' of the underlying
strongly-interacting theory, whose nature may be revealed by the properties of
the Skyrmions. We discuss the finite-temperature electroweak phase transition
in the low-energy effective theory, finding that the possibility of a
first-order electroweak phase transition is resurrected. We discuss the
evolution of the Universe during this transition and derive an
order-of-magnitude lower limit on the abundance of electroweak baryons in the
absence of a cosmological asymmetry, which suggests that such an asymmetry
would be necessary if the electroweak baryons are to provide the cosmological
density of dark matter. We revisit estimates of the corresponding
spin-independent dark matter scattering cross section, with a view to direct
detection experiments.Comment: 34 pages, 4 figures, additional references adde
Casimir energy and black hole pair creation in Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime
Following the subtraction procedure for manifolds with boundaries, we
calculate by variational methods, the Schwarzschild-de Sitter and the de Sitter
space energy difference. By computing the one loop approximation for TT tensors
we discover the existence of an unstable mode even for the non-degenerate case.
This result seems to be in agreement with the sub-maximal black hole pair
creation of Bousso-Hawking. The instability can be eliminated by the boundary
reduction method. Implications on a foam-like space are discussed.Comment: 19 pages,RevTeX with package epsf and four eps figures. Added other

Taming the Runaway Problem of Inflationary Landscapes
A wide variety of vacua, and their cosmological realization, may provide an
explanation for the apparently anthropic choices of some parameters of particle
physics and cosmology. If the probability on various parameters is weighted by
volume, a flat potential for slow-roll inflation is also naturally understood,
since the flatter the potential the larger the volume of the sub-universe.
However, such inflationary landscapes have a serious problem, predicting an
environment that makes it exponentially hard for observers to exist and giving
an exponentially small probability for a moderate universe like ours. A general
solution to this problem is proposed, and is illustrated in the context of
inflaton decay and leptogenesis, leading to an upper bound on the reheating
temperature in our sub-universe. In a particular scenario of chaotic inflation
and non-thermal leptogenesis, predictions can be made for the size of CP
violating phases, the rate of neutrinoless double beta decay and, in the case
of theories with gauge-mediated weak scale supersymmetry, for the fundamental
scale of supersymmetry breaking.Comment: 31 pages, including 3 figure
Quantum cosmology in the models of 2d and 4d dilatonic supergravity with WZ matter
We consider N=1 two-dimensional (2d) dilatonic supergravity (SG), 2d
dilatonic SG obtained by dimensional reduction from N=1 four-dimensional (4d)
SG, N=2 2d dilatonic SG and string-inspired 4d dilatonic SG. For all the
theories, the corresponding action on a bosonic background is constructed and
the interaction with (dilatonic) Wess-Zumino (WZ) multiplets is presented.
Working in the large-N approximation, it is enough to consider the trace
anomaly induced effective action due to dilaton-coupled conformal matter as a
quantum correction (for 2d models s-waves approximation is additionally used).
The equations of motion for all such models with quantum corrections are
written in a form convenient for numerical analysis. Their solutions are
numerically investigated for 2d and 4d Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) or 4d
Kantowski-Sacks Universes with a time-dependent dilaton via exponential dilaton
coupling. The evolution of the corresponding quantum cosmological models is
given for different choices of initial conditions and theory parameters. In
most cases we find quantum singular Universes. Nevertheless, there are examples
of Universe non-singular at early times. Hence, it looks unlikely that quantum
matter back reaction on dilatonic background (at least in large
approximation) may really help to solve the singularity problem.Comment: LaTeX file of the text (36 pages) and 3 ps files of 14 figures, few

Mucosal Application of gp140 Encoding DNA Polyplexes to Different Tissues Results in Altered Immunological Outcomes in Mice
Increasing evidence suggests that mucosally targeted vaccines will enhance local humoral and cellular responses whilst still eliciting systemic immunity. We therefore investigated the capacity of nasal, sublingual or vaginal delivery of DNA-PEI polyplexes to prime immune responses prior to mucosal protein boost vaccination. Using a plasmid expressing the model antigen HIV CN54gp140 we show that each of these mucosal surfaces were permissive for DNA priming and production of antigen-specific antibody responses. The elicitation of systemic immune responses using nasally delivered polyplexed DNA followed by recombinant protein boost vaccination was equivalent to a systemic prime-boost regimen, but the mucosally applied modality had the advantage in that significant levels of antigen-specific IgA were detected in vaginal mucosal secretions. Moreover, mucosal vaccination elicited both local and systemic antigen-specific IgG(+) and IgA(+) antibody secreting cells. Finally, using an Influenza challenge model we found that a nasal or sublingual, but not vaginal, DNA prime/protein boost regimen protected against infectious challenge. These data demonstrate that mucosally applied plasmid DNA complexed to PEI followed by a mucosal protein boost generates sufficient antigen-specific humoral antibody production to protect from mucosal viral challenge
Logarithmic Corrections to Extremal Black Hole Entropy from Quantum Entropy Function
We evaluate the one loop determinant of matter multiplet fields of N=4
supergravity in the near horizon geometry of quarter BPS black holes, and use
it to calculate logarithmic corrections to the entropy of these black holes
using the quantum entropy function formalism. We show that even though
individual fields give non-vanishing logarithmic contribution to the entropy,
the net contribution from all the fields in the matter multiplet vanishes. Thus
logarithmic corrections to the entropy of quarter BPS black holes, if present,
must be independent of the number of matter multiplet fields in the theory.
This is consistent with the microscopic results. During our analysis we also
determine the complete spectrum of small fluctuations of matter multiplet
fields in the near horizon geometry.Comment: LaTeX file, 52 pages; v2: minor corrections, references adde
The Off Shell - Mixing in the QCD Sum Rules
The dependence of the mixing amplitude is analyzed with
the use of the QCD sum rules and the dispersion relation. Going off shell the
mixing decreases, changes sign at and is
negative in the space like region. Implications of this result to the isospin
breaking part of the nuclear force are discussed.Comment: 26 pages + 11 figures (PostScript
