Mechanical systems subjected to generalized nonholonomic constraints
We study mechanical systems subject to constraint functions that can be
dependent at some points and independent at the rest. Such systems are modelled
by means of generalized codistributions. We discuss how the constraint force
can transmit an impulse to the motion at the points of dependence and derive an
explicit formula to obtain the ``post-impact'' momentum in terms of the
``pre-impact'' momentum.Comment: 24 pages, no figure
Dissipative vortex solitons in 2D-lattices
We report the existence of stable symmetric vortex-type solutions for
two-dimensional nonlinear discrete dissipative systems governed by a
cubic-quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. We construct a whole family of
vortex solitons with a topological charge S = 1. Surprisingly, the dynamical
evolution of unstable solutions of this family does not alter significantly
their profile, instead their phase distribution completely changes. They
transform into two-charges swirl-vortex solitons. We dynamically excite this
novel structure showing its experimental feasibility.Comment: 4 pages, 20 figure
Angular dependence of magnetic properties in Ni nanowire arrays
The angular dependence of the remanence and coercivity of Ni nanowire arrays
produced inside the pores of anodic alumina membranes has been studied. By
comparing our analytical calculations with our measurements, we conclude that
the magnetization reversal in this array is driven by means of the nucleation
and propagation of a transverse wall. A simple model based on an adapted
Stoner-Wohlfarth model is used to explain the angular dependence of the
coercivity
Quantum critical behavior of electrons at the edge of charge order
We consider quantum critical points (QCP) in which quantum fluctuations
associated with charge rather than magnetic order induce unconventional
metallic properties. Based on finite-T calculations on a two-dimensional
extended Hubbard model we show how the coherence scale T* characteristic of
Fermi liquid behavior of the homogeneous metal vanishes at the onset of charge
order. A strong effective mass enhancement reminiscent of heavy fermion
behavior indicates the possible destruction of quasiparticles at the QCP.
Experimental probes on quarter-filled layered organic materials are proposed
for unveiling the behavior of electrons across the quantum critical region.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let
Flux-cutting and flux-transport effects in type-II superconductor slabs in a parallel rotating magnetic field
The magnetic response of irreversible type-II superconductor slabs subjected
to in-plane rotating magnetic field is investigated by applying the circular,
elliptic, extended-elliptic, and rectangular flux-line-cutting critical-state
models. Specifically, the models have been applied to explain experiments on a
PbBi rotating disk in a fixed magnetic field , parallel to the flat
surfaces. Here, we have exploited the equivalency of the experimental situation
with that of a fixed disk under the action of a parallel magnetic field,
rotating in the opposite sense. The effect of both the magnitude of the
applied magnetic field and its angle of rotation upon the
magnetization of the superconductor sample is analyzed. When is smaller
than the penetration field , the magnetization components, parallel and
perpendicular to , oscillate with increasing the rotation angle. On
the other hand, if the magnitude of the applied field, , is larger than
, both magnetization components become constant functions of at
large rotation angles. The evolution of the magnetic induction profiles inside
the superconductor is also studied.Comment: 12 pages, 29 figure
Virulence of malaria is associated with differential expression of Plasmodium falciparum var gene subgroups in a case-control study
Plasmodium falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1 (PfEMP1) is a major pathogenicity factor in falciparum malaria that mediates cytoadherence. PfEMP1 is encoded by approximately 60 var genes per haploid genome. Most var genes are grouped into 3 subgroups: A, B, and C. Evidence is emerging that the specific expression of these subgroups has clinical significance. Using field samples from children from Papua New Guinea with severe, mild, and asymptomatic malaria, we compared proportions of transcripts of var groups, as determined by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. We found a significantly higher proportion of var group B transcripts in children with clinical malaria (mild and severe), whereas a large proportion of var group C transcripts was found in asymptomatic children. These data from naturally infected children clearly show that major differences exist in var gene expression between parasites causing clinical disease and those causing asymptomatic infections. Furthermore, parasites forming rosettes showed a significant up-regulation of var group A transcripts
Momentum and energy preserving integrators for nonholonomic dynamics
In this paper, we propose a geometric integrator for nonholonomic mechanical
systems. It can be applied to discrete Lagrangian systems specified through a
discrete Lagrangian defined on QxQ, where Q is the configuration manifold, and
a (generally nonintegrable) distribution in TQ. In the proposed method, a
discretization of the constraints is not required. We show that the method
preserves the discrete nonholonomic momentum map, and also that the
nonholonomic constraints are preserved in average. We study in particular the
case where Q has a Lie group structure and the discrete Lagrangian and/or
nonholonomic constraints have various invariance properties, and show that the
method is also energy-preserving in some important cases.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures; v2: example and figures added, minor correction
