Effect of flameholder pressure drop on emissions and performance of premixed-prevaporized combustors
Parametric tests were conducted to determine the effects of flameholder pressure drop on the emissions and performance of lean premixed-prevaporized combustors. A conical flameholder mounted in a diverging duct was tested with two values of flameholder blockage. Emissions of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and unburned hydrocarbons were measured for combustor entrance conditions of 600 to 800 K air temperature, 0.3 MPa to 0.5 MPa pressure, and 20 m/sec to 35 m/sec reference velocity. Jet A fuel was injected at flow rates corresponding to an equivalence ratio range from 0.8 down to the lean stability limit. Emission results for the high-blockage flameholder were a substantial improvement over the low-blockage emission results. A correlation of combustion efficiency with flameholder pressure drop was developed for pressure drops less than 9 percent

Bringing Salary Transparency to the World: Computing Robust Compensation Insights via LinkedIn Salary
The recently launched LinkedIn Salary product has been designed with the goal
of providing compensation insights to the world's professionals and thereby
helping them optimize their earning potential. We describe the overall design
and architecture of the statistical modeling system underlying this product. We
focus on the unique data mining challenges while designing and implementing the
system, and describe the modeling components such as Bayesian hierarchical
smoothing that help to compute and present robust compensation insights to
users. We report on extensive evaluation with nearly one year of de-identified
compensation data collected from over one million LinkedIn users, thereby
demonstrating the efficacy of the statistical models. We also highlight the
lessons learned through the deployment of our system at LinkedIn.Comment: Conference information: ACM International Conference on Information

Ion Transport Processes of Crustacean Epithelial Cells
Epithelial cells of the gut, antennal glands, integument, and gills of crustaceans regulate the movements of ions into and across these structures and thereby influence the concentrations of ions in the hemolymph. Specific transport proteins serving cations and anions are found on apical and basolateral cell membranes of epithelia in these tissues. In recent years, a considerable research effort has been directed at elucidating their physiological and molecular properties and relating these characteristics to the overall biology of the organisms. Efforts to describe ion transport in crustaceans have focused on the membrane transfer properties of Na1/H1 exchange, calcium uptake as it relates to the molt cycle, heavy metal sequestration and detoxification, and anion movements into and across epithelial cells. In addition to defining the properties and mechanisms of cation movements across specific cell borders, work over the past 5 yr has also centered on defining the molecular nature of certain transport proteins such as the Na1/H1 exchanger in gill and gut tissues. Monovalent anion transport proteins of the gills and gut have received attention as they relate to osmotic and ionic balance in euryhaline species. Divalent anion secretion events of the gut have been defined relative to potential roles they may have in hyporegulation of the blood and in hepatopancreatic detoxification events involving complexation with cationic metals
A relativistically covariant version of Bohm's quantum field theory for the scalar field
We give a relativistically covariant, wave-functional formulation of Bohm's
quantum field theory for the scalar field based on a general foliation of
space-time by space-like hypersurfaces. The wave functional, which guides the
evolution of the field, is space-time-foliation independent but the field
itself is not. Hence, in order to have a theory in which the field may be
considered a beable, some extra rule must be given to determine the foliation.
We suggest one such rule based on the eigen vectors of the energy-momentum
tensor of the field itself.Comment: 1 figure. Submitted to J Phys A. 20/05/04 replacement has additional

The Injector Layout of BERLinPro
BERLinPro is an Energy Recovery Linac Project running since 2011 at the HZB in Berlin. A conceptual design report has been published in 2012 [1]. One of the key components of the project is the 100 mA superconducting RF photocathode gun under development at the HZB since 2010. Starting in 2016 the injector will go into operation, providing 6.6 MeV electrons with an emittance well below 1mm mrad and bunches shorter than 5 ps. In 2017 the 50 MeV linac will be set up and full recirculation is planned for 2018. The injector design has been finalized and is described in detail in this paper. Emphasis is further laid on beam dynamics aspects and performance simulations of two different gun cavitie
Microscopic Derivation of Non-Markovian Thermalization of a Brownian Particle
In this paper, the first microscopic approach to the Brownian motion is
developed in the case where the mass density of the suspending bath is of the
same order of magnitude as that of the Brownian (B) particle. Starting from an
extended Boltzmann equation, which describes correctly the interaction with the
fluid, we derive systematicaly via the multiple time-scale analysis a reduced
equation controlling the thermalization of the B particle, i.e. the relaxation
towards the Maxwell distribution in velocity space. In contradistinction to the
Fokker-Planck equation, the derived new evolution equation is non-local both in
time and in velocity space, owing to correlated recollision events between the
fluid and particle B. In the long-time limit, it describes a non-markovian
generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. However, in spite of this complex
dynamical behaviour, the Stokes-Einstein law relating the friction and
diffusion coefficients is shown to remain valid. A microscopic expression for
the friction coefficient is derived, which acquires the form of the Stokes law
in the limit where the mean-free in the gas is small compared to the radius of
particle B.Comment: 28 pages, no figure, submitted to Journal of Statistical Physic
On the Quantitative Impact of the Schechter-Valle Theorem
We evaluate the Schechter-Valle (Black Box) theorem quantitatively by
considering the most general Lorentz invariant Lagrangian consisting of
point-like operators for neutrinoless double beta decay. It is well known that
the Black Box operators induce Majorana neutrino masses at four-loop level.
This warrants the statement that an observation of neutrinoless double beta
decay guarantees the Majorana nature of neutrinos. We calculate these
radiatively generated masses and find that they are many orders of magnitude
smaller than the observed neutrino masses and splittings. Thus, some lepton
number violating New Physics (which may at tree-level not be related to
neutrino masses) may induce Black Box operators which can explain an observed
rate of neutrinoless double beta decay. Although these operators guarantee
finite Majorana neutrino masses, the smallness of the Black Box contributions
implies that other neutrino mass terms (Dirac or Majorana) must exist. If
neutrino masses have a significant Majorana contribution then this will become
the dominant part of the Black Box operator. However, neutrinos might also be
predominantly Dirac particles, while other lepton number violating New Physics
dominates neutrinoless double beta decay. Translating an observed rate of
neutrinoless double beta decay into neutrino masses would then be completely
misleading. Although the principal statement of the Schechter-Valle theorem
remains valid, we conclude that the Black Box diagram itself generates
radiatively only mass terms which are many orders of magnitude too small to
explain neutrino masses. Therefore, other operators must give the leading
contributions to neutrino masses, which could be of Dirac or Majorana nature.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures; v2: minor corrections, reference added, matches

Shot noise in lithographically patterned graphene nanoribbons
We have investigated shot noise and conductance of multiterminal graphene nanoribbon devices at temperatures down to 50 mK. Away from the charge neutrality point, we find a Fano factor F≈0.4, nearly independent of the charge density. Our shot noise results are consistent with theoretical models for disordered graphene ribbons with a dimensionless scattering strength K0 ≈ 10 corresponding to rather strong disorder. Close to charge neutrality, an increase in F up to ∼0.7 is found, which indicates the presence of a dominant Coulomb gap possibly due to a single quantum dot in the transport gap.Peer reviewe
