Impact factor of Korean Journal of Pediatrics on Korean Medical Citation Index and Science Citation Index of Web of Science

PurposeThe total number of times a paper is cited, also known as the impact factor (IF) of a medical journal, is widely implied in evaluating the quality of a research paper. We evaluated the citation index data as an IF of Korean J Pediatr in Korean Medical Citation Index (KoMCI) and JCI of Web of Science.MethodsWe calculated the IF of Korean J Pediatr at KoMCI supervised by Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors. And we estimated the IF of Korean J Pediatr by the JCI of Web of Science although it was never officially reported.ResultsThe IF of Korean J Pediatr on KoMCI has increased from 0.100 in the year 2000, to 0.205 in 2008, and 0.326 in 2009. Although the IF of Korean J Pediatr was 0.006 in 2005, 0.018 in 2006, 0.028 in 2008, 0.066 in 2009, and 0.018 in 2010 according to the JCI of Web of Science, the number of citations are steadily increasing.ConclusionUnderstanding and realizing the current status will be a stepping stone for further improvement. The next objective of the Korean J Pediatr is to become registered in the SCI or SCIE. Increasing the IF according to the JCI of Web of Science is crucial in order to achieve this goal

Multiple Systemic Infarctions as a Complication of Bronchial Artery Embolization With Polyvinyl Alcohol: A Case Report

Bronchial artery embolization (BAE) is a widely used modality of treatment for massive hemoptysis which has well known complications such as chest pain, groin hematoma and transverse myelitis but systemic embolization of the material used in the procedure is very rare and was reported only four times in the literature which were all caused by the use of microspheres. Herein we report a case of a 41-year-old caucasian male who had a history of tuberculosis 10 years ago. He had BAE with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) for the treatment of recurrent hemoptysis. After the procedure, the patient complained of severe pain on the left upper quadrant and bilateral costovertebral regions and in abdominal CT, multiple infarcts in the subcapsular area of the spleen and kidneys were observed. This is the first reported case of inadvertent systemic embolization secondary to BAE with PVA. Although the risk of systemic embolization is greater with microspheres, still potentially serious and life threatening complications may occur with PVA

La cirurgia fetal ha donat passos de gegant. Malalties congènites com la síndrome de la brida amniòtica (BAE) ja poden ser tractades durant la gestació de la mare. En aquest cas però, els resultats provenen d'investigacions amb animals, tot i així, els bons resultats obtinguts auguren una futura aplicació en casos humans. L'article següent detalla els passos seguits durant la investigació i la posterior intervenció quirúrgica per tractar la BAE, una malformació de les extremitats que pot derivar, en el pitjor dels casos, en amputació. Un inqüestionable avanç en la investigació amb animals que no hagués estat possible sense l'ajuda de la Fundació Privada Noel, qui ha donat al centre els animals per a la realització d'estudis experimentals en cirurgia fetal.La cirugía fetal ha dado pasos de gigante. Renal and Splenic Micro-Infarctions Following Bronchial Artery Embolization with Tris-Acryl Microspheres

A bronchial artery embolization (BAE) is an important therapeutic method used to control acute and chronic hemoptysis. We report a case of multiple micro-infarcts involving both the kidneys and spleen, following a BAE with 500-700 µm crossed-linked tris-acryl microspheres (Embospheres) in a patient with bronchial artery pulmonary vein shunts. The superior penetration characteristics of the microspheres may have resulted in the greater tendency to cross the bronchial artery pulmonary vein shunts, which subsequently caused the systemic infarcts in our patient. We propose the use of larger sized microspheres (700-900 µm), which may aid in avoiding this complication
