Implementing Devised Theatre with Teenagers: Methodology and Design

    Get PDF
The paper presents our pedagogic approach for implementing device theatre principles in working with teenagers. These principles converge to our  research of the innovative concepts in the pedagogy field that emphasizes the role of the spontaneity and improvisation in the teaching process. This way of  exploring the Drama Art allows to the subject-students to discover and to became aware of their most intimate thoughts and to integrate them into an  artistic message. The defining principle of our pedagogic approach is the construction from the perspective of a finite artistic product which should be the  transmitter of a message born from a personal stake, intimate, emulated in the consensus of the member of the group. In this way it is provided an  adequate motivation of participants having a well-defined common goal. Also following this approach there are created pertinent occasions for accessing  the training specific to the actors

Screening patients with Diabetes Mellitus for Tuberculosis in China.

Objective  There is a high burden of both diabetes (DM) and tuberculosis (TB) in China, and as DM increases the risk of TB and adversely affects TB treatment outcomes, there is a need for bidirectional screening of the two diseases. How this is best performed is not well determined. In this pilot project in China, we aimed to assess the feasibility and results of screening DM patients for TB within the routine healthcare setting of five DM clinics. Method  Agreement on how to screen, monitor and record was reached in May 2011 at a national stakeholders meeting, and training was carried out for staff in the five clinics in July 2011. Implementation started in September 2011, and we report on 7 months of activities up to 31 March 2012. DM patients were screened for TB at each clinic attendance using a symptom-based enquiry, and those positive to any symptom were referred for TB investigations. Results  In the three quarters, 72% of 3174 patients, 79% of 7196 patients and 68% of 4972 patients were recorded as having been screened for TB, resulting in 7 patients found who were already known to have TB, 92 with a positive TB symptom screen and 48 of these newly diagnosed with TB as a result of referral and investigation. All patients except one were started on anti-TB treatment. TB case notification rates in screened DM patients were several times higher than those of the general population, were highest for the five sites combined in the final quarter (774/100 000) and were highest in one of the five clinics in the final quarter (804/100 000) where there was intensive in-house training, special assignment of staff for screening and colocation of services. Conclusion  This pilot project shows that it is feasible to carry out screening of DM patients for TB resulting in high detection rates of TB. This has major public health and patient-related implications

Actor training as a method of directors: Training in context of the Odin Teatret’s creative work and higher education

My paper examines the connection between actor training, the creative process, and institutional education using the findings of my PhD research. Using the theories of Watson, Féral, and Camilleri, I address conceptual clarifications of the term "training" in the first section of my study. I make a distinction between the definitions of the term training. Following that, I refer to training as constant practice. Through the history of Odin Teatret, one of the theater companies with the longest histories, I illustrate the connection between their training and performances and explore the degree to which one has defined the other throughout the company's history. I refer to writings by Barba, the Odin actors, and theorists who have talked about the company. As a working method, I examine the director's position in the training framework to address the issue of control over the actor training process. I'll discuss institutional education for actor training in my final paragraph. I'll make the argument that subject-level structured teaching of actor training should be just as crucial to the education of directors in Eastern Europe as it is to the training of actors

Devised Theatre – a Short Introduction

The aim of the following article is to define the concept of devised theatre, as well as outlining a brief history, and providing a description of the main elements  which constitute a collective performance. It also brings in discussion the member roles in a group that practices devised theatre, and the technique  they use in creating a performance

Citing musicality: Performance knowledge in the Gardzienice archive

    Get PDF
This article draws on previously published multimedia documents to explore the notion of musicality in the work of Włodzimierz Staniewski and the Gardzienice Centre for Theatre Practices. In addition to offering a close analysis of several documented moments – including performances, work demonstrations, expeditions and gatherings – it tests the ability of multimedia documentation to capture performance knowledge, arguing that the work of Gardzienice is a paradigmatic example of ‘practice as research’. Taking the archive as a crucial dimension of the dissemination of knowledge, the article uses multimedia citation to examine the specific contributions of Gardzienice in the context of musicality as a relation between the theatrical and the musical. The article demonstrates that the stability of the archive allows for a detailed explication of performance knowledge in a way that is not possible from live performance alone

Algunos aspectos cinéticos de las reacciones de sólidos con cloro

The present paper describes detailed kinetics investigations on some selected chlorine-solid reactions through thermogravimetric measurements. The solids studied in this article include chemical pure oxides and sulfides as well as their natural bearing materials. The chlorinating agents employed are gaseous mixtures of Cl2+N2 (chlorination), Cl2+O2 (oxychlorination), and Cl2+CO (carbochlorination). Results are presented as effects of various parameters on the reaction rate of these solids with these chlorinating agents. It was observed that the reactivity of these solids towards different chlorinating agents varied widely. Sulfides could be chlorinated at room temperature, while carbochlorination of chromium (III) oxide was possible only above 500 °C. The variation of the chlorination rate of these complex materials with respect to gas velocity, composition and temperature enabled us to focus some light on the plausible reaction mechanisms and stoichiometries. The obtained results were used for selective removal of iron from chromite concentrates, extraction of valuable metals from sulfide materials, purification of MgO samples, etc. Peer reviewe

International Law and Contemporary Slavery: The Long View

    Get PDF
The three essays in this special issue come together to confirm the value of exploring varying domestic expressions of and adaptations to international legal ideals. In each polity, lawmakers have viewed the terms “slavery” and “slave labor” in part through a domestic historical lens, and have drafted (or failed to draft) legislation accordingly. The United States inherited core concepts dating back to the moment of abolition of chattel slavery, and thus initially built its prohibitions of modern slavery on nineteenth-century rights guarantees and anti-peonage statutes, later reinforced by modern concepts of human trafficking. Having just emerged from a long dictatorship, Brazilian lawmakers in 1988 crafted a constitution containing ringing human rights guarantees, and gradually amended their mid-twentieth-century penal code and labor legislation to address contemporary working conditions. France, where consciousness about historical slavery has been relatively slow to develop, only very recently incorporated into domestic law explicit language referring to modern slavery, drawing nearly word-for-word from the 1926/1956 international conventions
