A high-speed bi-polar outflow from the archetypical pulsating star Mira A
Optical images and high-dispersion spectra have been obtained of the ejected
material surrounding the pulsating AGB star Mira A. The two streams of knots on
either side of the star, found in far ultra-viollet (FUV) GALEX images, have
now been imaged clearly in the light of Halpha. Spatially resolved profiles of
the same line reveal that the bulk of these knots form a bi-polar outflow with
radial velocity extremes of +- 150 km/s with respect to the central star. The
South stream is approaching and the North stream receding from the observer. A
displacement away from Mira A between the position of one of the South stream
knots in the new Halpha image and its position in the previous Palomar
Observatory Sky Survey (POSS I) red plate has been noted. If interpreted as a
consequence of expansion proper motions the bipolar outflow is tilted at 69deg
+- 2deg to the plane of the sky, has an outflow velocity of 160 +- 10 km/s and

Count Me In: The dimensions of social inclusion through culture and sport
This study was set up to examine claims made for the ability of cultural projects to promote social inclusion (cultural projects are here taken to include those incorporating sport, the arts, media, heritage and outdoor adventure). This was to be achieved primarily by collecting evidence from a sample of 14 projects selected from some 200 that had volunteered their services. The report to the governmentâs Social Exclusion Unit (SEU) from the Policy Action Team (PAT10) (1999)2 noted the potential. In his foreword, Chris Smith (then Secretary of State for the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS)) wrote: â⊠art and sport can not only make a valuable contribution to delivering key outcomes of lower long term unemployment, less crime, better health and better qualifications, but can also help to develop the individual pride, community spirit and capacity for responsibility that enable communities to run regeneration programmes themselvesâ. Similar statements have followed from other politicians, particularly in the recent Commons debate on sport and social exclusion (22/11/01), and again in the public health debate (13/12/01). However, the PAT 10 report also came to the same conclusion as previous commentators (e.g. Glyptis, 19893; Allison & Coalter, 19964; Long & Sanderson, 19985) that there is little âhardâ evidence of the social benefits that accrue
Mapping the Shores of the Brown Dwarf Desert. I. Upper Scorpius
We present the results of a survey for stellar and substellar companions to 82 young stars in the nearby OB association Upper Scorpius. This survey used nonredundant aperture mask interferometry to achieve typical contrast
limits of ÎK ~5-6 at the diffraction limit, revealing 12 new binary companions that lay below the detection limits
of traditional high-resolution imaging; we also summarize a complementary snapshot imaging survey that discovered
seven directly resolved companions. The overall frequency of binary companions (~35 +5 -4% at separations of
6-435 AU) appears to be equivalent to field stars of similar mass, but companions could be more common among
lower mass stars than for the field. The companion mass function has statistically significant differences compared to several suggested mass functions for the field, and we suggest an alternate lognormal parameterization of the mass function. Our survey limits encompass the entire brown dwarf mass range, but we only detected a single companion that might be a brown dwarf; this deficit resembles the so-called brown dwarf desert that has been observed by radial velocity planet searches. Finally, our surveyâs deep detection limits extend into the top of the planetary mass function, reaching 8-12 MJup for half of our sample. We have not identified any planetary companions at high confidence (âł99.5%), but we have identified four candidate companions at lower confidence (âł97.5%) that merit additional follow-up to confirm or disprove their existence

X-ray Studies of Two Neutron Stars in 47 Tucanae: Toward Constraints on the Equation of State
We report spectral and variability analysis of two quiescent low mass X-ray
binaries (X5 and X7, previously detected with the ROSAT HRI) in a Chandra
ACIS-I observation of the globular cluster 47 Tuc. X5 demonstrates sharp
eclipses with an 8.666+-0.01 hr period, as well as dips showing an increased
N_H column. The thermal spectra of X5 and X7 are well-modeled by unmagnetized
hydrogen atmospheres of hot neutron stars. No hard power law component is
required. A possible edge or absorption feature is identified near 0.64 keV,
perhaps an OV edge from a hot wind. Spectral fits imply that X7 is
significantly more massive than the canonical 1.4 \Msun neutron star mass, with
M>1.8 \Msun for a radius range of 9-14 km, while X5's spectrum is consistent
with a neutron star of mass 1.4 \Msun for the same radius range. Alternatively,
if much of the X-ray luminosity is due to continuing accretion onto the neutron
star surface, the feature may be the 0.87 keV rest-frame absorption complex (O
VIII & other metal lines) intrinsic to the neutron star atmosphere, and a mass
of 1.4 \Msun for X7 may be allowed.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, accepted by Ap
First-passage dynamics of obstructed tracer particle diffusion in one-dimensional systems
The standard setup for single-file diffusion is diffusing particles in one
dimension which cannot overtake each other, where the dynamics of a tracer
(tagged) particle is of main interest. In this article we generalise this
system and investigate first-passage properties of a tracer particle when
flanked by crowder particles which may, besides diffuse, unbind (rebind) from
(to) the one-dimensional lattice with rates (). The
tracer particle is restricted to diffuse with rate on the lattice. Such a
model is relevant for the understanding of gene regulation where regulatory
proteins are searching for specific binding sites ona crowded DNA. We quantify
the first-passage time distribution, ( is time), numerically using
the Gillespie algorithm, and estimate it analytically. In terms of our key
parameter, the unbinding rate , we study the bridging of two known
regimes: (i) when unbinding is frequent the particles may effectively pass each
other and we recover the standard single particle result
with a renormalized diffusion constant, (ii) when unbinding is rare we recover
well-known single-file diffusion result . The intermediate
cases display rich dynamics, with the characteristic -peak and the
long-time power-law slope both being sensitive to

VLT observations of the asymmetric Etched Hourglass Nebula, MyCn 18
Context. The mechanisms that form extreme bipolar planetary nebulae remain
unclear. Aims. The physical properties, structure, and dynamics of the bipolar
planetary nebula, MyCn 18, are investigated in detail with the aim of
understanding the shaping mechanism and evolutionary history of this object.
Methods. VLT infrared images, VLT ISAAC infrared spectra, and long-slit optical
Echelle spectra are used to investigate MyCn 18. Morpho-kinematic modelling was
used to firmly constrain the structure and kinematics of the source. A
timescale analysis was used to determine the kinematical age of the nebula and
its main components. Results. A spectroscopic study of MyCn 18's central and
offset region reveals the detailed make-up of its nebular composition.
Molecular hydrogen, atomic helium, and Bracket gamma emission are detected from
the central regions of MyCn 18. ISAAC spectra from a slit position along the
narrow waist of the nebula demonstrate that the ionised gas resides closer to
the centre of the nebula than the molecular emission. A kinematical age of the
nebula and its components were obtained by the P-V arrays and timescale
analysis. Conclusions. The structure and kinematics of MyCn 18 are better
understood using an interactive 3-D modelling tool called shape. A dimensional
and timescale analysis of MyCn 18's major components provides a possible
mechanism for the nebula's asymmetry. The putative central star is somewhat
offset from the geometric centre of the nebula, which is thought to be the
result of a binary system. We speculate that the engulfing and destruction of
an exoplanet during the AGB phase may have been a key event in shaping MyCn 18
