Pion-nucleon scattering in a meson-exchange model
The pi-N interaction is studied within a meson-exchange model and in a
coupled-channels approach which includes the channels pi-N, eta-N, as well as
three effective pi-pi-N channels namely rho-N, pi-Delta, and sigma-N. Starting
out from an earlier model of the Julich group systematic improvements in the
dynamics and in some technical aspects are introduced. With the new model an
excellent quantitative reproduction of the pi-N phase shifts and inelasticity
parameters in the energy region up to 1.9 GeV and for total angular momenta J
leq 3/2 is achieved. Simultaneously, good agreement with data for the total and
differential pi-N -> eta-N transition cross sections is obtained. The
connection of the pi_N dynamics in the S_{11} partial wave with the reaction
pi-N -> eta-N is discussed.Comment: 32 pages, 9 figure
Metal-insulator transitions: Influence of lattice structure, Jahn-Teller effect, and Hund's rule coupling
We study the influence of the lattice structure, the Jahn-Teller effect and
the Hund's rule coupling on a metal-insulator transition in AnC60 (A= K, Rb).
The difference in lattice structure favors A3C60 (fcc) being a metal and A4C60
(bct) being an insulator, and the coupling to Hg Jahn-Teller phonons favors
A4C60 being nonmagnetic. The coupling to Hg (Ag) phonons decreases (increases)
the value Uc of the Coulomb integral at which the metal-insulator transition
occurs. There is an important partial cancellation between the Jahn-Teller

A Heterosynaptic Learning Rule for Neural Networks
In this article we intoduce a novel stochastic Hebb-like learning rule for
neural networks that is neurobiologically motivated. This learning rule
combines features of unsupervised (Hebbian) and supervised (reinforcement)
learning and is stochastic with respect to the selection of the time points
when a synapse is modified. Moreover, the learning rule does not only affect
the synapse between pre- and postsynaptic neuron, which is called homosynaptic
plasticity, but effects also further remote synapses of the pre- and
postsynaptic neuron. This more complex form of synaptic plasticity has recently
come under investigations in neurobiology and is called heterosynaptic
plasticity. We demonstrate that this learning rule is useful in training neural
networks by learning parity functions including the exclusive-or (XOR) mapping
in a multilayer feed-forward network. We find, that our stochastic learning
rule works well, even in the presence of noise. Importantly, the mean learning
time increases with the number of patterns to be learned polynomially,

Body composition of male office workers compared by means of infrared reflection measurement, bioimpedance analysis and calipermetry
There are currently many different anthropometric methods to determine individual body fat percentage, as well as almost as many variants of bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) and only a single method of infrared reflection measurement (IR) as easily feasible methods of field research. The present study aims at a simultaneous comparison between calipermetry, IR and BIA. In particular, the question which measurement method could be used as an equivalent method in the event of failure of the BIA or IR is investigated. The sample group consisted of 250 male office workers from the Rhine-Main area (average age 31.75 ± 9.16 years, average height 178.5 ± 6.93 cm and average weight 80.61 ± 9.42 kg). The measurements were previously scheduled and mostly carried out during the lunch break. For anthropometry, 13 skin fat folds were measured with the help of the Accu® Measure Caliper, thigh circumference with the help of a measuring tape, height with a height measuring device and body mass on the weight scale. Subsequently, an IR measurement (Futrex®) and a BIA (InBody®) were performed on the same subject. The parameters of body fat percentage and total body water (in litres) were examined. The statistical methods were correlation coefficients, Bland-Altman comparison and paired t-test for equivalence. For the men studied, the highest correlation coefficients were in the comparisons between the formulas according to ParĂzkova & Buzkova 1 and ParĂzkova & Buzkova 3 (r = 0.93), as well as for ParĂzkova & Buzkova 3 and ParĂzkova & Buzkova 4 (r = 0.96). The correlation coefficient for the IR vs. BIA comparison was only r = 0.56. A key result of the present study was the finding that certain methods cannot be substituted in an equivalent way, in fact only some calipermetric regression equations
Mitochondrial encephalocardio-myopathy with early neonatal onset due to TMEM70 mutation
Objective Mitochondrial disturbances of energy-generating systems in childhood are a heterogeneous group of disorders. The aim of this multi-site survey was to characterise the natural course of a novel mitochondrial disease with ATP synthase deficiency and mutation in the TMEM70 gene.
Methods Retrospective clinical data and metabolic profiles were collected and evaluated in 25 patients (14 boys, 11 girls) from seven European countries with a c. 317-2A -> G mutation in the TMEM70 gene.
Results Severe muscular hypotonia (in 92% of newborns), apnoic spells (92%), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCMP; 76%) and profound lactic acidosis (lactate 5-36 mmol/l; 92%) with hyperammonaemia (100-520 mu mol/l; 86%) were present from birth. Ten patients died within the first 6 weeks of life. Most patients surviving the neonatal period had persisting muscular hypotonia and developed psychomotor delay. HCMP was non-progressive and even disappeared in some children. Hypospadia was present in 54% of the boys and cryptorchidism in 67%. Increased excretion of lactate and 3-methylglutaconic acid (3-MGC) was observed in all patients. In four surviving patients, life-threatening hyperammonaemia occurred during childhood, triggered by acute gastroenteritis and prolonged fasting.
Conclusions ATP synthase deficiency with mutation in TMEM70 should be considered in the diagnosis and management of critically ill neonates with early neonatal onset of muscular hypotonia, HCMP and hypospadias in boys accompanied by lactic acidosis, hyperammonaemia and 3-MGC-uria. However, phenotype severity may vary significantly. The disease occurs frequently in the Roma population and molecular-genetic analysis of the TMEM70 gene is sufficient for diagnosis without need of muscle biopsy in affected children
Nonplanar integrability at two loops
In this article we compute the action of the two loop dilatation operator on
restricted Schur polynomials that belong to the su(2) sector, in the displaced
corners approximation. In this non-planar large N limit, operators that
diagonalize the one loop dilatation operator are not corrected at two loops.
The resulting spectrum of anomalous dimensions is related to a set of decoupled
harmonic oscillators, indicating integrability in this sector of the theory at
two loops. The anomalous dimensions are a non-trivial function of the 't Hooft
coupling, with a spectrum that is continuous and starting at zero at large N,

Mott-Hubbard insulators for systems with orbital degeneracy
We study how the electron hopping reduces the Mott-Hubbard band gap in the
limit of a large Coulomb interaction U and as a function of the orbital
degeneracy N. The results support the conclusion that the hopping contribution
grows as roughly \sqrt{N}W, where W is the one-particle band width, but in
certain models a crossover to a \sim NW behavior is found for a sufficiently

A double coset ansatz for integrability in AdS/CFT
We give a proof that the expected counting of strings attached to giant
graviton branes in AdS_5 x S^5, as constrained by the Gauss Law, matches the
dimension spanned by the expected dual operators in the gauge theory. The
counting of string-brane configurations is formulated as a graph counting
problem, which can be expressed as the number of points on a double coset
involving permutation groups. Fourier transformation on the double coset
suggests an ansatz for the diagonalization of the one-loop dilatation operator
in this sector of strings attached to giant graviton branes. The ansatz agrees
with and extends recent results which have found the dynamics of open string
excitations of giants to be given by harmonic oscillators. We prove that it

Ferromagnetic coupling and magnetic anisotropy in molecular Ni(II) squares
We investigated the magnetic properties of two isostructural Ni(II) metal
complexes [Ni4Lb8] and [Ni4Lc8]. In each molecule the four Ni(II) centers form
almost perfect regular squares. Magnetic coupling and anisotropy of single
crystals were examined by magnetization measurements and in particular by
high-field torque magnetometry at low temperatures. The data were analyzed in
terms of an effective spin Hamiltonian appropriate for Ni(II) centers. For both
compounds, we found a weak intramolecular ferromagnetic coupling of the four
Ni(II) spins and sizable single-ion anisotropies of the easy-axis type. The
coupling strengths are roughly identical for both compounds, whereas the
zero-field-splitting parameters are significantly different. Possible reasons

Correlators of Giant Gravitons from dual ABJ(M) Theory
We generalize the operators of ABJM theory, given by Schur polynomials, in
ABJ theory by computing the two point functions in the free field and at finite
limits. These polynomials are then identified with the states of
the dual gravity theory. Further, we compute correlators among giant gravitons
as well as between giant gravitons and ordinary gravitons through the
corresponding correlators of ABJ(M) theory. Finally, we consider a particular
non-trivial background produced by an operator with an -charge of
and find, in presence of this background, due to the contribution of
the non-planar corrections, the large expansion is replaced by
