    Forming short-period Wolf-Rayet X-ray binaries and double black holes through stable mass transfer

    We show that black-hole High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) with O- or B-type donor stars and relatively short orbital periods, of order one week to several months may survive spiral in, to then form Wolf-Rayet (WR) X-ray binaries with orbital periods of order a day to a few days; while in systems where the compact star is a neutron star, HMXBs with these orbital periods never survive spiral-in. We therefore predict that WR X-ray binaries can only harbor black holes. The reason why black-hole HMXBs with these orbital periods may survive spiral in is: the combination of a radiative envelope of the donor star, and a high mass of the compact star. In this case, when the donor begins to overflow its Roche lobe, the systems are able to spiral in slowly with stable Roche-lobe overflow, as is shown by the system SS433. In this case the transferred mass is ejected from the vicinity of the compact star (so-called "isotropic re-emission" mass loss mode, or "SS433-like mass loss"), leading to gradual spiral-in. If the mass ratio of donor and black hole is >3.5>3.5, these systems will go into CE evolution and are less likely to survive. If they survive, they produce WR X-ray binaries with orbital periods of a few hours to one day. Several of the well-known WR+O binaries in our Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds, with orbital periods in the range between a week and several months, are expected to evolve into close WR-Black-Hole binaries,which may later produce close double black holes. The galactic formation rate of double black holes resulting from such systems is still uncertain, as it depends on several poorly known factors in this evolutionary picture.     The origin of the runaway high-mass X-ray binary HD153919/4U1700-37

    Based on its Hipparcos proper motion, we propose that the high-mass X-ray binary HD153919/4U1700-37 originates in the OB association Sco OB1. At a distance of 1.9 kpc the space velocity of 4U1700-37 with respect to Sco OB1 is 75 km/s. This runaway velocity indicates that the progenitor of the compact X-ray source lost about 7 Msun during the (assumed symmetric) supernova explosion. The system's kinematical age is about 2 +/- 0.5 million years which marks the date of the supernova explosion forming the compact object. The present age of Sco OB1 is <8 Myr; its suggested core, NGC 6231, seems to be somewhat younger (~5 Myr). If HD153919/4U1700-37 was born as a member of Sco OB1, this implies that the initially most massive star in the system terminated its evolution within 30 Msun.     With natural resources depleting, sustainable solutions are becoming more and more a necessity. To deal with the depleting resources, the Dutch government aims to generate 14% of country’s energy consumption through natural resources by 2020. The Dutch built environment is estimated to be responsible for 38.1% of the total energy consumption. This means that investments and innovation within this area have high potential. However, there are some indications that these goals cannot be met. New houses often meet these requirements but, with a growth of 0.8% per year, these only make up for a small portion of all projects. As a result, a strong focus lays on improving and renovating the existing housing market towards a sustainable and low energy environment. For this transition, information on the current housing market, possible renovation options and insight on the investments costs are required. Within this PDEng-project the aim is to further develop WoonConnect, a digital tool that can help to speed up this transition for both renovation projects and new buildings

    Does Intraoperative Cell Salvage Reduce Postoperative Infection Rates in Cardiac Surgery?

    Objective: Primary outcome was the risk for infections after cell salvage in cardiac surgery. Design: Data of a randomized controlled trial on cell salvage and filter use (ISRCTN58333401). Setting: Six cardiac surgery centers in the Netherlands. Participants: All 716 patients undergoing elective coronary artery bypass grafting, valve surgery, or combined procedures over a 4-year period who completed the trial. Interventions: Postoperative infection data were assessed according to Centre of Disease Control and Prevention/National Healthcare Safety Network surveillance definitions. Measurements and Main Results: Fifty-eight (15.9%) patients with cell salvage had infections, compared with 46 (13.1%) control patients. Mediation analysis was performed to estimate the direct effect of cell salvage on infections (OR 2.291 [1.177;4.460], p = 0.015) and the indirect effects of allogeneic transfusion and processed cell salvage blood on infections. Correction for confounders, including age, seks and body mass index was performed. Allogeneic transfusion had a direct effect on infections (OR = 2.082 [1.133;3.828], p = 0.018), but processed cell salvage blood did not (OR = 0.999 [0.999; 1.001], p = 0.089). There was a positive direct effect of cell salvage on allogeneic transfusion (OR = 0.275 [0.176;0.432], p < 0.001), but a negative direct effect of processed cell salvage blood (1.001 [1.001;1.002], p < 0.001) on allogeneic transfusion. Finally, there was a positive direct effect of cell salvage on the amount of processed blood. Conclusions: Cell salvage was directly associated with higher infection rates, but this direct effect was almost completely eliminated by its indirect protective effect through reduced allogeneic blood transfusion

    Psychometric properties of the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHF-Q)

    Objective: To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHF-Q) in patients with atrial fibrillation. Design: A prospective study of the patients who underwent DC electrical cardioversion. Setting: Clinics of cardiology and thoracic surgery of the University Hospital in Groningen, the Netherlands. Main outcome measures: The disease-specific MLHF-Q and generic measures of quality of life were administered. The sensitivity to change over time was tested with effect sizes (ES). Internal consistency of MLHF-Q scales was estimated with Cronbach's alpha. To evaluate the construct validity multitrait-multimethod analysis was applied. The 'known group validity' was evaluated by the comparison of mean scores and effect sizes between two groups of the New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification (NYHA I versus II-III). Stability of MLHF-Q scales was estimated in a subgroup of patients who remained stable. Perfect congruence analysis and factor analysis were applied to confirm the a priori determined structure. Results: Cronbach's alpha was :0.80 of the MLHF-Q scales. Perfect congruence analysis (PCA) showed that the results resemble quite well the a priori assumed factor structure. Multitrait-multi method analysis showed convergent validity coefficients ranging from 0.59 to 0.73 (physical impairment dimension) and 0.39 to 0.69 (emotional dimension). The magnitude of change can be interpreted as medium (ES = 0.50). The results of a 'test-retest' analysis in a stable group can be valued as satisfactory for the MLHF-Q scales (Pearson's r > 0.60). The physical dimension and the overall score of the MLHF-Q discriminated significantly between the NYHA I and II-III groups (p <0.001) with large effect sizes (ES > 1.0). Conclusions: The MLHF-Q has solid psychometric properties and the outcome of the current study indicates that the MLHF-Q is an effective and efficient instrument

    Strange stars in low-mass binary pulsar systems

    Based on observational facts and a variety of theoretical arguments we discuss in this work the possibility that pulsars in Low-Mass Binary Pulsar systems could be strange stars rather than neutron stars. It is shown that, although subject to reasonable uncertainties, the consideration of the physics of the SQM core and thin normal crusts leads to the prediction of several observed features of the magnetic field history of these systems whitin this working hypothesis.Comment: 6 pages, no figures, PlainTex file submitted to IJMP

    Expected Coalescence Rate of Double Neutron Stars for Ground Based Interferometers

    In this paper we present new estimates of the coalescence rate of neutron star binaries in the local universe and we discuss its consequences for the first generations of ground based interferometers. Our approach based on both evolutionary and statistical methods gives a galactic merging rate of 1.7 10−5^{-5} yr−1^{-1}, in the range of previous estimates 10−6^{-6} - 10−4^{-4} yr−1^{-1}. The local rate which includes the contribution of elliptical galaxies is two times higher, in the order of 3.4 10−5^{-5} yr−1^{-1}. We predict one detection every 148 and 125 years with initial VIRGO and LIGO, and up to 6 events per year with their advanced configuration. Our recent detection rate estimates from investigations on VIRGO future improvements are quoted.Comment: talk given at the GWDAW9 (Annecy, 2004) to be published in CQ
