Signal processing of anthropometric data
The Anthropometric Measurements Laboratory has accumulated a large body of data from a number of previous experiments. The data is very noisy, therefore it requires the application of some signal processing schemes. Moreover, it was not regarded as time series measurements but as positional information; hence, the data is stored as coordinate points as defined by the motion of the human body. The accumulated data defines two groups or classes. Some of the data was collected from an experiment designed to measure the flexibility of the limbs, referred to as radial movement. The remaining data was collected from experiments designed to determine the surface of the reach envelope. An interactive signal processing package was designed and implemented. Since the data does not include time this package does not include a time series element. Presently the results is restricted to processing data obtained from those experiments designed to measure flexibility
Spatially resolved photo ionization of ultracold atoms on an atom chip
We report on photo ionization of ultracold magnetically trapped Rb atoms on
an atom chip. The atoms are trapped at 5 K in a strongly anisotropic
trap. Through a hole in the chip with a diameter of 150 m two laser beams
are focussed onto a fraction of the atomic cloud. A first laser beam with a
wavelength of 778 nm excites the atoms via a two photon transition to the 5D
level. With a fiber laser at 1080 nm the excited atoms are photo ionized.
Ionization leads to depletion of the atomic density distribution observed by
absorption imaging. The resonant ionization spectrum is reported. The setup
used in this experiment is not only suitable to investigate BEC ion mixtures
but also single atom detection on an atom chip
On the recombination in high-order harmonic generation in molecules
We show that the dependence of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) on the
molecular orientation can be understood within a theoretical treatment that
does not involve the strong field of the laser. The results for H_2 show
excellent agreement with time-dependent strong field calculations for model
molecules, and this motivates a prediction for the orientation dependence of
HHG from the N_2 3s_g valence orbital. For both molecules, we find that the
polarization of recombination photons is influenced by the molecular
orientation. The variations are particularly pronounced for the N_2 valence
orbital, which can be explained by the presence of atomic p-orbitals.Comment: 6 pages 7 figure
Celebrating 150 Years of Analyzing Fertility Trends in Germany
Ever since the very beginning of the Journal of Economics and Statistics, population economics has featured prominently in the Journal. Fertility naturally plays an important role in population economics. Its size has decreased significantly from the 1900s. Long time-series regarding fertility and basic trends in Germany are documented and analyzed. We identify three different explanatory approaches for the decline in fertility, according to which the various articles of the Journal related to this area are categorized. The paper also investigates previous fertility studies published by the Journal since the beginning. It points out that several articles anticipated subsequent research directions in the area of population economics at an early stage. In addition, significant contributions were made in terms of further developing existing knowledge.
