Effect of Tryptophan Analogs on Derepression of the \u3cem\u3eEscherichia coli\u3c/em\u3e Tryptophan Operon by Indole-3-Propionic Acid

The abilities of 14 tryptophan analogs to repress the tryptophan (trp) operon have been studied in Escherichia coli cells derepressed by incubation with 0.25 mM indole-3-propionic acid (IPA). trp operon expression was monitored by measuring the specific activities of anthranilate synthase (EC 4.1.3.27) and the tryptophan synthase (EC 4.2.1.20) ÎČ subunit. Analogs characterized by modification or removal of the α-amino group or the α-carboxyl group did not repress the trp operon. The only analogs among this group that appeared to interact with the trp aporepressor were IPA, which derepressed the trp operon, and d-tryptophan. Analogs with modifications of the indole ring repressed the trp operon to various degrees. 7-Methyl-tryptophan inhibited anthranilate synthase activity and consequently derepressed the trp operon. Additionally, 7-methyltryptophan prevented IPA-mediated derepression but, unlike tryptophan, did so in a non-coordinate manner, with the later enzymes of the operon being relatively more repressed than the early enzymes. The effect of 7-methyltryptophan on IPA-mediated derepression was likely not due to the interaction of IPA with the allosteric site of anthranilate synthase, even though feedback-resistant mutants of anthranilate synthase were partially resistant to derepression by IPA. The effect of 7-methyltryptophan on derepression by IPA was probably due to the effect of the analog-aporepressor complex on trp operon expression

Boundary conditions for free surface inlet and outlet\ud problems

    Get PDF
We investigate and compare the boundary conditions that are to be applied to free surface problems involving inlet and outlets of Newtonian fluid, typically found in coating processes. The flux of fluid is a priori known at an inlet, but unknown at an outlet, where it is governed by the local behaviour near the film-forming meniscus. In the limit of vanishing capillary number Ca it is well-known that the flux scales with Ca2/3, but this classical result is nonuniform as the contact angle approaches . By examining this limit we find a solution that is uniformly valid for all contact angles. Furthermore, by considering the far-field behaviour of the free surface we show that there exists a critical capillary number above which the problem at an inlet becomes over-determined. The implications of this result for the modelling of coating flows are discussed

Wind tunnel tests of high-lift systems for advanced transports using high-aspect-ratio supercritical wings

    Get PDF
The wind tunnel testing of an advanced technology high lift system for a wide body and a narrow body transport incorporating high aspect ratio supercritical wings is described. This testing has added to the very limited low speed high Reynolds number data base for this class or aircraft. The experimental results include the effects on low speed aerodynamic characteristics of various leading and trailing edge devices, nacelles and pylons, ailerons, and spoilers, and the effects of Mach and Reynolds numbers

'It's a Form of Freedom': The experiences of people with disabilities within equestrian sport

    Get PDF
This paper explores the embodied, gendered experiences of disabled horse‐riders. Drawing on data from five in‐depth interviews with paradressage riders, the ways in which their involvement in elite disability sport impacts upon their sense of identity and confidence are explored, as well as the considerable health and social benefits that this involvement brings. Social models of disability are employed and the shortcomings of such models, when applied to disability sport, are highlighted. The data presented here demonstrates the necessity of seeing disability sport as an embodied experience and acknowledging the importance of impairment to the experiences of disabled athletes. Living within an impaired body is also a gendered experience and the implications of this when applied to elite disability sport are considered

Quasi-deterministic generation of entangled atoms in a cavity

We present a scheme to generate a maximally entangled state of two three-level atoms in a cavity. The success or failure of the generation of the desired entangled state can be determined by detecting the polarization of the photon leaking out of the cavity. With the use of an automatic feedback, the success probability of the scheme can be made to approach unity.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

Enhancement of W+/- H-/+ Production at Hadron Colliders in the Two Higgs Doublet Model

We discuss the associated W+/- H-/+ production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The dependence of the hadronic cross section on the Higgs sector parameters is investigated in detail in the framework of the general Two Higgs Doublet Model (THDM). We study the possible enhancement of the THDM prediction for the cross section compared to the prediction of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We find regions in the THDM parameter space where the THDM prediction can exceed the one of the MSSM by two orders of magnitude. These regions of large cross section are in agreement with theoretical bounds on the model, derived from the requirement of vacuum stability and perturbative unitarity, and are not excluded by experimental constraints.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figure

Corporate Governance: A Discussion on Minority Shareholder Protection in China

This research paper discusses the agency problems derived from the ownership structure in Chinese listed firms and their implications to minority interest group protection in China. It analyses the regulatory framework for minority interest protection and role played by various regulatory agencies in the protecting the economic interest of minority interest in the Chinese listed firms. The paper concludes that in the emerging economy with its weak legal system to protect minority interests, judicial enforcement can be substituted by strong regulations
