Series Analysis of Tricritical Behavior: Mean-Field Model and Slicewise Pade Approximants

A mean-field model is proposed as a test case for tricritical series analyses methods. Derivation of the 50th order series for the magnetization is reported. As the first application this series is analyzed by the traditional slicewise Pade approximant method popular in earlier studies of tricriticality.Comment: 22 pages in plain TeX; 7 PostScript figs available by e-mai

R.A.Fisher, design theory, and the Indian connection

Design Theory, a branch of mathematics, was born out of the experimental statistics research of the population geneticist R. A. Fisher and of Indian mathematical statisticians in the 1930s. The field combines elements of combinatorics, finite projective geometries, Latin squares, and a variety of further mathematical structures, brought together in surprising ways. This essay will present these structures and ideas as well as how the field came together, in itself an interesting story.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

Critical structure factors of bilinear fields in O(N)-vector models

We compute the two-point correlation functions of general quadratic operators in the high-temperature phase of the three-dimensional O(N) vector model by using field-theoretical methods. In particular, we study the small- and large-momentum behavior of the corresponding scaling functions, and give general interpolation formulae based on a dispersive approach. Moreover, we determine the crossover exponent Ï•T\phi_T associated with the traceless tensorial quadratic field, by computing and analyzing its six-loop perturbative expansion in fixed dimension. We find: Ï•T=1.184(12)\phi_T=1.184(12), Ï•T=1.271(21)\phi_T=1.271(21), and Ï•T=1.40(4)\phi_T=1.40(4) for N=2,3,5N=2,3,5 respectively.Comment: 27 page
