    Nanoparticle ordering in sandwiched polymer brushes

    The organization of nano-particles inside grafted polymer layers is governed by the interplay of polymer-induced entropic interactions and the action of externally applied fields. Earlier work had shown that strong external forces can drive the formation of colloidal structures in polymer brushes. Here we show that external fields are not essential to obtain such colloidal patterns: we report Monte Carlo and Molecular dynamics simulations that demonstrate that ordered structures can be achieved by compressing a `sandwich' of two grafted polymer layers, or by squeezing a coated nanotube, with nano-particles in between. We show that the pattern formation can be efficiently controlled by the applied pressure, while the characteristic length--scale, i.e. the typical width of the patterns, is sensitive to the length of the polymers. Based on the results of the simulations, we derive an approximate equation of state for nano-sandwiches.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure

    A Pre-Protostellar Core in L1551

    Large field surveys of NH3, C2S, 13CO and C18O in the L1551 dark cloud have revealed a prolate, pre-protostellar molecular core (L1551-MC) in a relatively quiescent region to the northwest of the well-known IRS 5 source. The kinetic temperature is measured to be 9K, the total mass is ~2Msun, and the average particle density is 10^4-10^5 cm^(-3). L1551-MC is 2.25' x 1.11' in projection oriented at a position angle of 133deg. The turbulent motions are on the order of the sound speed in the medium and contain 4% of the gravitational energy, E_{grav}, of the core. The angular momentum vector is projected along the major axis of L1551-MC corresponding to a rotational energy of 2.5E-3(sin i)^(-2)|E_{grav}|. The thermal energy constitutes about a third of |E_{grav}| and the virial mass is approximately equal to the total mass. L1551-MC is gravitationally bound and in the absence of strong, ~160 microgauss, magnetic fields will likely contract on a ~0.3 Myr time scale. The line profiles of many molecular species suggest that the cold quiescent interior is surrounded by a dynamic, perhaps infalling envelope which is embedded within the ambient molecular gas of L1551.Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures, ApJ accepte

    Layering, freezing and re-entrant melting of hard spheres in soft confinement

    Confinement can have a dramatic effect on the behavior of all sorts of particulate systems and it therefore is an important phenomenon in many different areas of physics and technology. Here, we investigate the role played by the softness of the confining potential. Using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, we determine the phase diagram of three-dimensional hard spheres that in one dimension are constrained to a plane by a harmonic potential. The phase behavior depends strongly on the density and on the stiffness of the harmonic confinement. Whilst we find the familiar sequence of confined hexagonal and square-symmetric packings, we do not observe any of the usual intervening ordered phases. Instead, the system phase separates under strong confinement, or forms a layered re-entrant liquid phase under weaker confinement. It is plausible that this behavior is due to the larger positional freedom in a soft confining potential and to the contribution that the confinement energy makes to the total free energy. The fact that specific structures can be induced or suppressed by simply changing the confinement conditions (e.g. in a dielectrophoretic trap) is important for applications that involve self-assembled structures of colloidal particles.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Fish preservation in Senegal: potential use of lactic acid bacteria and their antibacterial metabolites. In Senegal, fish are first as staple animal protein foods for populations. Socioeconomic constraints hamper the development of industrial preservations. Traditional fish production has some inherent food safety concerns considering the high susceptibility of seafood to bacterial spoilage. Some strategies of seafood products preservation using lactic acid bacteria producing bacteriocin are not very expensive and do not consume energy very much. They can be adapted in the preservation of fish in Senegal particularly in the fermentation in which the catches, generally handled for many hours at ambient temperature, are only added salt (NaCl) and sun dried. Lactic acid bacteria producing bacteriocins could be used as starters (with addition of carbohydrates) during the preparation of fish for rendering them more resistant to the growth of spoilage and pathogenic bacteria by in situ production of organic acids and bacteriocins. A second alternative of application of these bacteria is to use bactericidal solutions obtained from their cultures as additional barrier to sodium chloride to prevent growth of the flora during fish storage for maturation. These new strategies of preparation combined with drying can be used to enhance microbiological and dietetic qualities of local seafood commodities

    A self-guided Internet-delivered intervention for adults with ADHD: a protocol for a randomized controlled trial

    Background Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adulthood, with an estimated prevalence of 2–3%, is associated with several challenges in daily life functioning. The availability of evidence-based psychological interventions for adults with ADHD is still poor. Interventions delivered over the Internet on smartphones or personal computers may help to increase the availability of effective psychological interventions. The primary aim of this randomized controlled trial is to examine the efficacy of a self-guided Internet-delivered intervention on severity levels of ADHD symptomatology and quality of life. Methods We aim to include 118 participants with a self-reported ADHD diagnosis in a randomized controlled trial with two arms: 1) self-guided Internet-delivered intervention for coping with ADHD (N = 59); 2) self-guided online psychoeducation (control group, N = 59). After 3 months, the control group will be given access to the intervention. The primary clinical outcomes are inattention and quality of life. Secondary clinical outcomes are hyperactivity, stress and depression. Measures will be obtained at three time points: before (baseline), immediately after (8 weeks) and 3 months after the intervention. Uptake, usage, adherence and satisfaction will be explored. Discussion This RCT will provide valuable information on the clinical effectiveness of an Internet-delivered intervention for adults with ADHD. This study is, to our knowledge, one of the first randomized control trials that investigates the effects of a self-guided Internet-delivered psychological intervention in a fairly large group of adults with ADHD.publishedVersio

    Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs): Point mutations matter in management, a review

    The therapeutic implications of the genomic alterations seen within the drivers of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are among the best understood in all of solid tumors. Sequencing of cKIT and PDGFRα should be considered standard practice for the treatment of GIST patients. In this article, we will review the common mutations and how they are utilized in clinical management. In addition, we will review the rare D842V PDGFRα mutation and the diverse molecular group that lacks a mutation in either cKIT or PDGFRα (wild-type GIST) which are best treated on clinical trial. Finally, we will look forward at the future therapies that are ever evolving for management of GIST. Taken together, the scientific advances in understanding the molecular basis of GIST validates the importance of knowing and understanding the mutations that are present in any one patient

    Differential expression of the heat shock protein Hsp70 in natural populations of the tilapia, Sarotherodon melanotheron, acclimatised to a range of environmental salinities

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The relationship between environmental variation and induction of heat shock proteins <it>(Hsps) </it>has been much documented under experimental conditions. However, very little is known about such induction in natural populations acclimatised to prevailing environmental conditions. Furthermore, while induction of stress proteins has been well documented in response to environmental contaminants and thermal stressors, little is known about whether factors, such as extreme salinity, are also potential inductors. The black-chinned tilapia <it>Sarotherodon melanotheron </it>is unusual for its ability to colonise estuarine environments in West Africa that are characterised by extremely high salinities. The relationships between mRNA levels of the 70 kDa heat shock protein (<it>Hsp70</it>) and Na<sup>+</sup>, K<sup>+</sup>-ATPase1α (<it>Naka</it>) in the gills, environmental salinity, and a life-history trait (condition factor) were investigated in wild populations of this species sampled from three locations in the Saloum estuary, at salinities ranging from 40 to 100 psu.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The highest <it>Hsp70 </it>and <it>Naka </it>mRNA levels, and the poorest condition factors were recorded in the most saline sampling site (100 psu). The <it>Hsp70 </it>and <it>Naka </it>mRNA were correlated amongst themselves and showed a direct positive correlation with environmental salinity, and a negative correlation with fish condition factor. Thus, the <it>Hsp70 </it>is constitutively overexpressed by <it>S. melanotheron </it>acclimatised to extreme hypersalinity.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results indicate that, although <it>S. melanotheron </it>can colonise extremely saline environments, the overexpression of <it>Hsp70 </it>combined with the higher <it>Naka </it>mRNA expression reveals that this represents a chronic stress. The induction of <it>Hsp70 </it>was, therefore, a biomarker of chronic hyper-osmotic stress which presumably can be linked to the impaired growth performance and precocious reproduction that have been demonstrated in the populations at the extremely saline sites.</p

    Goblet Cell Carcinoid in a Patient with Neurofibromatosis Type 1: A Rare Combination

    Neuroendocrine tumors are rare tumors primarily located in the gastrointestinal tract. Goblet cell carcinoid is a rare subgroup of neuroendocrine tumors located in the appendix. Neurofibromatosis type 1 is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by a mutation in the NF1 gene. Patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 have an increased incidence of typical neuroendocrine tumors, but it is unknown if this is the case with goblet cell carcinoids. We describe a patient with both neurofibromatosis type 1 and goblet cell carcinoid, that according to literature would occur in 0.00017 per million per year. This may suggest a previously unknown association between neurofibromatosis type 1 and goblet cell carcinoids
