    Second harmonic generation in gallium-lanthanum-sulphide (Ga:La:S) and GeS2+Ga:La:S glasses is investigated. It is shown that microcrystals of Ga:La:S and of alpha-phase of gallium-sulphide (alpha-Ga2S3), whose presence in the glass matrix is revealed by x-ray diffraction analysis, are responsible for the frequency doubling process

    From finite geometry exact quantities to (elliptic) scattering amplitudes for spin chains: the 1/2-XYZ

    Initially, we derive a nonlinear integral equation for the vacuum counting function of the spin 1/2-XYZ chain in the {\it disordered regime}, thus paralleling similar results by Kl\"umper \cite{KLU}, achieved through a different technique in the {\it antiferroelectric regime}. In terms of the counting function we obtain the usual physical quantities, like the energy and the transfer matrix (eigenvalues). Then, we introduce a double scaling limit which appears to describe the sine-Gordon theory on cylindrical geometry, so generalising famous results in the plane by Luther \cite{LUT} and Johnson et al. \cite{JKM}. Furthermore, after extending the nonlinear integral equation to excitations, we derive scattering amplitudes involving solitons/antisolitons first, and bound states later. The latter case comes out as manifestly related to the Deformed Virasoro Algebra of Shiraishi et al. \cite{SKAO}. Although this nonlinear integral equations framework was contrived to deal with finite geometries, we prove it to be effective for discovering or rediscovering S-matrices. As a particular example, we prove that this unique model furnishes explicitly two S-matrices, proposed respectively by Zamolodchikov \cite{ZAMe} and Lukyanov-Mussardo-Penati \cite{LUK, MP} as plausible scattering description of unknown integrable field theories.Comment: Article, 41 pages, Late

    Construction of some missing eigenvectors of the XYZ spin chain at the discrete coupling constants and the exponentially large spectral degeneracy of the transfer matrix

    We discuss an algebraic method for constructing eigenvectors of the transfer matrix of the eight vertex model at the discrete coupling parameters. We consider the algebraic Bethe ansatz of the elliptic quantum group EΟ„,Ξ·(sl2)E_{\tau, \eta}(sl_2) for the case where the parameter Ξ·\eta satisfies 2NΞ·=m1+m2Ο„2 N \eta = m_1 + m_2 \tau for arbitrary integers NN, m1m_1 and m2m_2. When m1m_1 or m2m_2 is odd, the eigenvectors thus obtained have not been discussed previously. Furthermore, we construct a family of degenerate eigenvectors of the XYZ spin chain, some of which are shown to be related to the sl2sl_2 loop algebra symmetry of the XXZ spin chain. We show that the dimension of some degenerate eigenspace of the XYZ spin chain on LL sites is given by N2L/NN 2^{L/N}, if L/NL/N is an even integer.     SDiff(2) Toda equation -- hierarchy, Ο„\tau function, and symmetries

    A continuum limit of the Toda lattice field theory, called the SDiff(2) Toda equation, is shown to have a Lax formalism and an infinite hierarchy of higher flows. The Lax formalism is very similar to the case of the self-dual vacuum Einstein equation and its hyper-K\"ahler version, however now based upon a symplectic structure and the group SDiff(2) of area preserving diffeomorphisms on a cylinder S1Γ—RS^1 \times \R. An analogue of the Toda lattice tau function is introduced. The existence of hidden SDiff(2) symmetries are derived from a Riemann-Hilbert problem in the SDiff(2) group. Symmetries of the tau function turn out to have commutator anomalies, hence give a representation of a central extension of the SDiff(2) algebra.Comment: 16 pages (``vanilla.sty" is attatched to the end of this file after ``\bye" command

    Tau functions expressed as fermionic expectation values are shown to provide a natural and straightforward description of a number of random processes and statistical models involving hard core configurations of identical particles on the integer lattice, like a discrete version simple exclusion processes (ASEP), nonintersecting random walkers, lattice Coulomb gas models and others, as well as providing a powerful tool for combinatorial calculations involving paths between pairs of partitions.     Presence of Cartilage Stem/Progenitor Cells in Adult Mice Auricular Perichondrium

    BACKGROUND: Based on evidence from several other tissues, cartilage stem/progenitor cells in the auricular cartilage presumably contribute to tissue development or homeostasis of the auricle. However, no definitive studies have identified or characterized a stem/progenitor population in mice auricle. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) label-retaining technique was used to label dividing cells in fetal mice. Observations one year following the labeling revealed that label-retaining cells (LRCs) were present specifically in auricular perichondrium at a rate of 0.08Β±0.06%, but LRCs were not present in chondrium. Furthermore, LRCs were successfully isolated and cultivated from auricular cartilage. Immunocytochemical analyses showed that LRCs express CD44 and integrin-Ξ±(5). These LRCs, putative stem/progenitor cells, possess clonogenicity and chondrogenic capability in vitro. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: We have identified a population of putative cartilage stem/progenitor cells in the auricular perichondrium of mice. Further characterization and utilization of the cell population should improve our understanding of basic cartilage biology and lead to advances in cartilage tissue engineering and novel therapeutic strategies for patients with craniofacial defects, including long-term tissue restoration

    A qq-analogue of the tau function of the modified KP hierarchy is defined by a change of independent variables. This tau function satisfies a system of bilinear qq-difference equations. These bilinear equations are translated to the language of wave functions, which turn out to satisfy a system of linear qq-difference equations. These linear qq-difference equations are used to formulate the Lax formalism and the description of quasi-classical limit. These results can be generalized to a qq-analogue of the Toda hierarchy.     Epimorphin Mediates Mammary Luminal Morphogenesis through Control of C/EBPΞ²

    We have shown previously that epimorphin (EPM), a protein expressed on the surface of myoepithelial and fibroblast cells of the mammary gland, acts as a multifunctional morphogen of mammary epithelial cells. Here, we present the molecular mechanism by which EPM mediates luminal morphogenesis. Treatment of cells with EPM to induce lumen formation greatly increases the overall expression of transcription factor CCAAT/enhancer binding protein (C/EBP)Ξ² and alters the relative expression of its two principal isoforms, LIP and LAP. These alterations were shown to be essential for the morphogenetic activities, since constitutive expression of LIP was sufficient to produce lumen formation, whereas constitutive expression of LAP blocked EPM-mediated luminal morphogenesis. Furthermore, in a transgenic mouse model in which EPM expression was expressed in an apolar fashion on the surface of mammary epithelial cells, we found increased expression of C/EBPΞ², increased relative expression of LIP to LAP, and enlarged ductal lumina. Together, our studies demonstrate a role for EPM in luminal morphogenesis through control of C/EBPΞ² expression
