    Spin dynamics in the antiferromagnetic phase for electron-doped cuprate superconductors

    Based on the tt-t′t'-t′′t''-JJ model we have calculated the dynamical spin susceptibilities in the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase for electron-doped cuprates, by use of the slave-boson mean-field theory and random phase approximation. Various results for the susceptibilities versus energy and momentum have been shown at different dopings. At low energy, except the collective spin-wave mode around (π,π)(\pi,\pi) and 0, we have primarily observed that new resonance peaks will appear around (0.3π,0.7π)(0.3\pi,0.7\pi) and equivalent points with increasing doping, which are due to the particle-hole excitations between the two AF bands. The peaks are pronounced in the transverse susceptibility but not in the longitudinal one.     Elastodynamics of radially inhomogeneous spherically anisotropic elastic materials in the Stroh formalism

    A method is presented for solving elastodynamic problems in radially inhomogeneous elastic materials with spherical anisotropy, i.e.\ materials such that cijkl=cijkl(r)c_{ijkl}= c_{ijkl}(r) in a spherical coordinate system r,θ,ϕ{r,\theta,\phi}. The time harmonic displacement field u(r,θ,ϕ)\mathbf{u}(r,\theta ,\phi) is expanded in a separation of variables form with dependence on θ,ϕ\theta,\phi described by vector spherical harmonics with rr-dependent amplitudes. It is proved that such separation of variables solution is generally possible only if the spherical anisotropy is restricted to transverse isotropy with the principal axis in the radial direction, in which case the amplitudes are determined by a first-order ordinary differential system. Restricted forms of the displacement field, such as u(r,θ)\mathbf{u}(r,\theta), admit this type of separation of variables solutions for certain lower material symmetries. These results extend the Stroh formalism of elastodynamics in rectangular and cylindrical systems to spherical coordinates.Comment: 15 page

    A Structured Framework and Resources to Use to Get Your Medical Education Work Published.

    IntroductionMedical educators often have great ideas for medical education scholarship but have difficulty converting their educational abstract or project into a published manuscript.MethodsDuring this workshop, participants addressed common challenges in developing an educational manuscript. In small-group case scenarios, participants discovered the importance of the "So what?" in making the case for their project. Incorporating conceptual frameworks, participants chose appropriate outcome metrics, discussed how to frame the discussion section, and ensured appropriate journal fit. After each small-group exercise, large-group discussions allowed the small groups to report back so that facilitators could highlight and reinforce key learning points. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants left with a checklist for creating an educational manuscript and an additional resources document to assist them in avoiding common pitfalls when turning their educational abstract/project into a publishable manuscript.ResultsThis workshop was presented in 2016 and 2017. Presenter evaluations were completed by 33 participants; 11 completed conference evaluations. The mean overall rating on presenter evaluations was 4.55 out of 5, while the conference evaluations mean was 3.73 out of 4. Comments provided on both evaluation tools highlighted the perceived effectiveness of the delivery and content. More than 50% of respondents stated that they planned to incorporate the use of conceptual frameworks in future work.DiscussionThis workshop helped participants address common challenges by providing opportunities for hands-on practice as well as tips and resources for use when submitting a medical education manuscript for publication

    Experimental observation of negative differential resistance from an InAs/GaSb interface

    We have observed negative differential resistance at room temperature from devices consisting of a single interface between n-type InAs and p-type GaSb. InAs and GaSb have a type II staggered band alignment; hence, the negative differential resistance arises from the same mechanism as in a p+-n+ tunnel diode. Room-temperature peak current densities of 8.2×10^4 A/cm^2 and 4.2×10^4 A/cm^2 were measured for structures with and without undoped spacer layers at the heterointerface, respectively

    Dislocation core field. I. Modeling in anisotropic linear elasticity theory

    Aside from the Volterra field, dislocations create a core field, which can be modeled in linear anisotropic elasticity theory with force and dislocation dipoles. We derive an expression of the elastic energy of a dislocation taking full account of its core field and show that no cross term exists between the Volterra and the core fields. We also obtain the contribution of the core field to the dislocation interaction energy with an external stress, thus showing that dislocation can interact with a pressure. The additional force that derives from this core field contribution is proportional to the gradient of the applied stress. Such a supplementary force on dislocations may be important in high stress gradient regions, such as close to a crack tip or in a dislocation pile-up

    Corrosion is a general term for the oxidation process of metal. In the case of aircraft, corrosion on aluminum airframe skin can often be recognized by dulling or pitting of an area, and sometimes by the white powdery deposit of aluminum corrosion product. Corrosion in these areas means loss of aluminum material from the airframe skin. Thus corrosion can seriously affect the structural integrity of an aircraft unless proper inspection and maintenance is systematically performed. During heavy structural aircraft maintenance, corrosions are still defined mostly in a qualitative rather than a quantitative sense. The qualitative evaluations are biased and unpredictable because corrosions are extremely hard to detect and to predict in their early stages of formation

    Two-Color Coherent Photodissociation of Nitrogen Oxide in Intense Laser Fields

    A simple one-dimensional semi-classical model with a Morse potential is used to investigate the possibility of two-color infrared multi-photon dissociation of vibrationally excited nitrogen oxide. The amplitude ratio effects and adiabatic effects are investigated. Some initial states are found to have thresholds smaller than expected from single-mode considerations and multiple thresholds exist for initial states up to 32.
