Generalized linear isotherm regularity equation of state applied to metals
A three-parameter equation of state (EOS) without physically incorrect
oscillations is proposed based on the generalized Lennard-Jones (GLJ) potential
and the approach in developing linear isotherm regularity (LIR) EOS of Parsafar
and Mason [J. Phys. Chem., 1994, 49, 3049]. The proposed (GLIR) EOS can include
the LIR EOS therein as a special case. The three-parameter GLIR, Parsafar and
Mason (PM) [Phys. Rev. B, 1994, 49, 3049], Shanker, Singh and Kushwah (SSK)
[Physica B, 1997, 229, 419], Parsafar, Spohr and Patey (PSP) [J. Phys. Chem. B,
2009, 113, 11980], and reformulated PM and SSK EOSs are applied to 30 metallic
solids within wide pressure ranges. It is shown that the PM, PMR and PSP EOSs
for most solids, and the SSK and SSKR EOSs for several solids, have physically
incorrect turning points, and pressure becomes negative at high enough
pressure. The GLIR EOS is capable not only of overcoming the problem existing
in other five EOSs where the pressure becomes negative at high pressure, but
also gives results superior to other EOSs.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Finding Meaning: a talking points brief on underemployment of service personnel
NZDF provides transition programmes for military personnel, these programmes have not been seen by the individual as being ‘useful’. It is this desire to be useful that makes an ex-service person a valuable employee. However most service personnel leave without a civilian or trade qualification. It takes them a long time to get a job. In addition even those that leave with a qualification that is recognised in the civilian world find themselves ‘starting over’ and their years of service ignored or discounted.falseAucklandPost Transition Lt
Switching speed distribution of spin-torque-induced magnetic reversal
The switching probability of a single-domain ferromagnet under spin-current
excitation is evaluated using the Fokker-Planck equation(FPE). In the case of
uniaxial anisotropy, the FPE reduces to an ordinary differential equation in
which the lowest eigenvalue determines the slowest switching
events. We have calculated by using both analytical and numerical
methods. It is found that the previous model based on thermally distributed
initial magnetization states \cite{Sun1} can be accurately justified in some
useful limiting conditions.Comment: The 10th Joint MMM/Intermag, HA-0
A sparse semi-blind source identification method and its application to Raman spectroscopy for explosives detection
Rapid and reliable detection and identification of unknown chemical substances are critical to homeland security. It is challenging to identify chemical components from a wide range of explosives. There are two key steps involved. One is a non-destructive and informative spectroscopic technique for data acquisition. The other is an associated library of reference features along with a computational method for feature matching and meaningful detection within or beyond the library. In this paper, we develop a new iterative method to identify unknown substances from mixture samples of Raman spectroscopy. In the first step, a constrained least squares method decomposes the data into a sum of linear combination of the known components and a non-negative residual. In the second step, a sparse and convex blind source separation method extracts components geometrically from the residuals. Verification based on the library templates or expert knowledge helps to confirm these components. If necessary, the confirmed meaningful components are fed back into step one to refine the residual and then step two extracts possibly more hidden components. The two steps may be iterated until no more components can be identified. We illustrate the proposed method in processing a set of the so called swept wavelength optical resonant Raman spectroscopy experimental data by a satisfactory blind extraction of a priori unknown chemical explosives from mixture samples. We also test the method on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra for chemical compounds identification. © 2013 Published by Elsevier B.V
Antenna Miniaturization Based on Supperscattering Effect
Antennas are essential components of all existing radio equipments. The miniaturization of antenna is a key issue of antenna technology. Based on supperscattering effect, we found that when a small horn antenna is located inside of a dielectric core and covered with a complementary layer, its far field radiation pattern will be equivalent to a large horn antenna. The complementary layer with only axial parameters varying with radius is obtained using coordinate transformation theory. Besides, the influence of loss and perturbations of parameters on supperscattering effect is also investigated. Results show that the device is robust against the perturbation in the axial material parameters when the refractive index is kept invariant. Full-wave simulations based on finite element method are performed to validate the design
The low-noise optimisation method for gearbox in consideration of operating conditions
This paper presents a comprehensive procedure to calculate the steady dynamic response and the noise radiation generated from a stepping-down gearbox. In this process, the dynamic model of the cylindrical gear transmission system is built with the consideration of the time-varying mesh stiffness, gear errors and bearing supporting, while the data of dynamic bearing force is obtained through solving the model. Furthermore, taking the data of bearing force as the excitation, the gearbox vibrations and noise radiation are calculated by numerical simulation, and then the time history of node dynamic response, noise spectrum and resonance frequency range of the gearbox are obtained. Finally, the gearbox panel acoustic contribution at the resonance frequency range is calculated. Based on the conclusions from the gearbox panel acoustic contribution analyses and the mode shapes, two gearbox stiffness improving plans have been studied. By contrastive analysis of gearbox noise radiation, the effectiveness of the improving plans is confirmed. This study has provided useful theoretical guideline to the gearbox design

Q&A: Cellular near death experiences-what is anastasis?
Apoptosis is a form of programmed cell death that is carried out by proteolytic enzymes called caspases. Executioner caspase activity causes cells to shrink, bleb, and disintegrate into apoptotic bodies and has been considered a point of no return for apoptotic cells. However, relatively recent work has shown that cells can survive transient apoptotic stimuli, even after executioner caspase activation. This process is called anastasis. In this Q&A, we answer common questions that arise regarding anastasis, including how it is defined, the origin of the name, the potential physiological consequences, molecular mechanisms, and open questions for this new field of study
