    Design and Implementation of a Measurement-Based Policy-Driven Resource Management Framework For Converged Networks

    This paper presents the design and implementation of a measurement-based QoS and resource management framework, CNQF (Converged Networks QoS Management Framework). CNQF is designed to provide unified, scalable QoS control and resource management through the use of a policy-based network management paradigm. It achieves this via distributed functional entities that are deployed to co-ordinate the resources of the transport network through centralized policy-driven decisions supported by measurement-based control architecture.     Conceptual Data Modeling in the Introductory Database Course: Is it Time for UML?

    Traditionally, the typical undergraduate database course uses a form of Entity-Relationship (ER) notation when teaching conceptual modeling. While we have seen an increase in the academic coverage of UML in the database course, it is very rare to see UML as the primary modeling notation when teaching conceptual data modeling. However, outside of academe, there has been advocacy for the use of UML as an effective modeling tool for database design and for it to provide a unifying modeling framework. This paper examines the level of support for using UML vs. established ER notations for teaching conceptual data modeling in the introductory undergraduate database course. An analysis of textbook and tool support as well as a survey of what IS undergraduate programs are using in their introductory undergraduate database courses is included

    Emotional Responses to Computer-Based Training Materials in Education

    This paper discusses the results of an experiment that examines how emotional responses influence student satisfaction ratings with computer-based training materials. A comparison between tutorial-based and a simulation-based training showed significant differences in student emotional responses, satisfaction and continuance. The authors caution educators to consider the benefits and limitations of more automated assessment and learning simulation tools versus traditional application-embedded tutorials, as additional layers of training automation may lower student ease-of-use and satisfaction ratings, and ultimately, their interest in the subject

    Extended γ‐ray emission in solar flares

    During the solar flare events on 11 and 15 June 1991, COMPTEL measured extended emission in the neutron capture line for about 5 hours after the impulsive phase. The time profiles can be described by a double exponential decay with decay constants on the order of 10 min for the fast and 200 min for the slow component. Within the statistical uncertainty both flares show the same long‐term behaviour. The spectrum during the extended phase is significantly harder than during the impulsive phase and pions are not produced in significant numbers before the beginning of the extended emission. Our results with the measurements of others allow us to rule out long‐term trapping of particles in non‐turbulent loops to explain the extended emission of these two flares and our data favour models based on continued acceleration

    THE ALIGNED RANK TRANSFORM PROCEDURE

    Recent work has shown that the rank transform methodology is flawed when applied to multifactor designs with interactions. A simple fix-up is proposed and shown to apply to designs typical of those found in agricultural research including split-plots. Simulation results suggest that the fix-up provides a valid procedure for analyzing multifactor designs when error distributions are symmetric or moderately skewed. The procedure appears to have power advantages over normal theory ANOVA when error distributions are heavy tailed

    Effects of Deterioration Parameters on Storage of Maize

    Maize (Zea mays L), commonly known as corn in the United States, is the third most important cereal grain worldwide, after wheat and rice. It is a basic staple grain for large groups of people in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. In tropical countries, a large proportion of the maize is harvested and stored under humid and warm climatic conditions, which subsequently results in rapid deterioration of the grains, mainly because of growth of molds and pests. This study reviewed the main factors that lead to deterioration of maize in tropical countries and suggests ways of preventing the identified causes. This paper also reviews world production, varieties, climatic and storage conditions of maize. Deterioration of maize is mainly affected by moisture content, temperature (grain and air), relative humidity, storage conditions, fungal growth, and insect pests. Fungal growth, especially Aspergillus flavus and Fusarium sp in maize, facilitated by hot and humid conditions, poses a major risk through production of mycotoxins. In order to maintain high quality maize for both short- and long-term storage, maize must be protected from weather, growth of microorganisms, and pests
