    A large number of former unaccompanied minors in the Netherlands leave for unknown destinations during the asylum procedure or after being rejected. In this contribution the authors provide answers to the question how undocumented (former) unaccompanied minors provide for their iving and housing. The study is based on interviews with 118 former undocumented unaccompanied minors who were recruited through the personal networks of the researchers and through contacts with representatives of (private) organizations who support the youngsters. The undocumented minors are excluded from formal employment as well as provisions of the welfare state. By far the largest group of the undocumented (former) unaccompanied minors has never been involved in criminal activities and only one third of them work in the informal economy. The sectors in which these youngsters perform informal work vary from cleaning and construction to catering and personal services. The work is characterized by uncertain working hours. There are often few hours available and the work often takes place on call. The pay is meagre and few respondents can survive exclusively on their earnings. The undocumented (former) unaccompanied minors are mainly supported by friends and private organizations for their living and housing. It is because of this support that the youngsters do not roam the streets and can continue their illegal stay in the Netherlands. The strong orientation of the youngsters towards a lawful residence in the Netherlands causes them to fear the risks of arrest while working, so they rather settle for the limited support of private organizations and friends. The support of private organizations and the focus of the youngsters towards a lawful stay thus constitute a buffer against exploitation

    Alleenstaande minderjarige vreemdelingen (amv’s) die uitgeprocedeerd raken, krijgen voorzieningen van de overheid totdat zij kunnen worden uitgezet óf tot de dag dat zij 18 jaar worden. Op dat moment worden zij geacht, net als andere afgewezen asielzoekers, zelfstandig Nederland te verlaten. Het grote aantal jonge asielzoekers dat echter met onbekende bestemming vanuit de asielprocedure of vanuit de opvang verdwijnt, roept de vraag op wat er met hen gebeurt. Hoe voorzien de illegaal verblijvende (voormalige) amv’s in hun levensonderhoud en huisvesting, welke contacten hebben zij met anderen en de overheid en hoe en waar zien zij hun toekomstig verblijf? Deze en andere vragen komen uitgebreid aan de orde in dit boek dat handelt over de levensomstandigheden van jongeren die op moment van binnenkomst in Nederland vreemdeling, alleenstaand en minderjarig waren en die thans onrechtmatig in Nederland verblijven of hebben verbleven. Op basis van uitgebreide gesprekken met 118 jongeren wordt een indringend beeld geschetst van hun situatie en verwachtingen over de toekomst

    Cotunneling thermopower of single electron transistors

    We study the thermopower of a quantum dot weakly coupled to two reservoirs by tunnel junctions. At low temperatures the transport through the dot is suppressed by charging effects (Coulomb blockade). As a result the thermopower shows an oscillatory dependence on the gate voltage. We study this dependence in the limit of low temperatures where the transport through the dot is dominated by the processes of inelastic cotunneling. We also obtain a crossover formula for intermediate temperatures which connects our cotunneling results to the known sawtooth behavior in the sequential tunneling regime. As the temperature is lowered, the amplitude of thermopower oscillations increases, and their shape changes qualitatively.Comment: 9 pages, including 4 figure

    Stronger than your voices:A cognitive behavioral therapy for youth suffering from auditory verbal hallucinations

    Objective: Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) are a common feature in youth and mostly transient. Nevertheless, while present, AVH can cause considerable distress. Children and adolescents seeking help for distressing AVH represent a heterogeneous group in terms of underlying factors, yet they consistently suffer from their AVH. Until now, a youth-specific psychotherapeutic intervention for AVH was lacking. Experts in the field of treating AVH in both adults and youngsters collaborated with service users to develop the cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) "Stronger Than Your Voices" (STYV). We investigated feasibility and clinical outcomes of the STYV therapy. Methods: Patients were derived from children and adolescents seeking help for AVH at the UMC Utrecht outpatient clinic with an indication for STYV therapy. Therapists preferably originated from referring health care facilities and were required to have sufficient general knowledge and experience with CBT. They received a short individual training to apply STYV. After, patients and their therapists could participate this naturalistic pilot study, assessing feasibility, tolerability, and clinical change when applying the STYV therapy. Results: Six participants (10-16 years old), all suffering from comorbid psychopathology, provided pre and post measures, all completing STYV therapy without experiencing an aggravation of symptoms. AVH total impact decreased 40% with Cohen's d within-group effect size (1.28) also suggesting clinically meaningful change. Therapists were positive about STYV therapy and manual. Conclusion: The STYV therapy is feasible for youth with distressing AVH. First results indicate that STYV may be clinically effective. A trial to further test effectiveness in a larger sample is needed

    Experimental Evidence for Coulomb Charging Effects in an Open Quantum Dot at Zero Magnetic Field

    We have measured the low-temperature transport properties of an open quantum dot formed in a clean one-dimensional channel. For the first time, at zero magnetic field, continuous and periodic oscillations superimposed upon ballistic conductance steps are observed when the conductance through the dot GG exceeds 2e2/h2e^2/h. We ascribe the observed conductance oscillations to evidence for Coulomb charging effects in an open dot. This is supported by the evolution of the oscillating features for G>2e2/hG>2e^2/h as a function of both temperature and barrier transparency. Our results strongly suggest that at zero magnetic field, current theoretical and experimental understanding of Coulomb charging effects overlooks charging in the presence of fully transmitted 1D channels.Comment: To appear in Phys.     Virtual reality-based cognitive behavioural therapy for patients with generalized social anxiety disorder:a pilot study

    BACKGROUND: Patients with generalized social anxiety disorder (SAD) avoid various social situations and can be reluctant to engage in in vivo exposure therapy. Highly personalized practising can be required before patients are ready to perform in vivo exposure. Virtual reality-based therapy could be beneficial for this group. AIMS: To assess the feasibility and potential effect of virtual reality-based cognitive behavioural therapy (VR-CBT) for patients with severe generalized SAD. METHODS: Fifteen patients with generalized SAD attended up to 16 VR-CBT sessions. Questionnaires on clinical and functional outcomes, and diary assessments on social activity, social anxiety and paranoia were completed at baseline, post-treatment and at 6-months follow-up. RESULTS: Two patients dropped out of treatment. Improvements in social anxiety and quality of life were found at post-treatment. At follow-up, depressive symptoms had decreased, and the effect on social anxiety was maintained. With respect to diary assessments, social anxiety in company and paranoia were significantly reduced by post-treatment. These improvements were maintained at follow-up. No increase was observed in social activity. CONCLUSIONS: This uncontrolled pilot study demonstrates the feasibility and treatment potential of VR-CBT in a difficult-to-treat group of patients with generalized SAD. Results suggest that VR-CBT may be effective in reducing anxiety as well as depression, and can increase quality of life

    Coulomb Blockade Oscillations in the Thermopower of Open Quantum Dots

    We consider Coulomb blockade oscillations of thermoelectric coefficients of a single electron transistor based on a quantum dot strongly coupled to one of the leads. Analytic expression for the thermopower as a function of temperature TT and the reflection amplitude rr in the quantum point contact is obtained. Two regimes can be identified: Tâ‰ȘEC∣r∣2T \ll E_C|r|^2 and T≫EC∣r∣2T \gg E_C |r|^2, where ECE_C is the charging energy of the dot. The former regime is characterized by weak logarithmic dependence of the thermopower on the reflection coefficient, in the latter the thermopower is linear in the reflection coefficient ∣r∣2|r|^2 but depends on temperature only logarithmically.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    Automated diffeomorphic registration of anatomical structures with rigid parts: application to dynamic cervical MRI.

    International audienceWe propose an iterative two-step method to compute a diffeomorphic non-rigid transformation between images of anatomical structures with rigid parts, without any user intervention or prior knowledge on the image intensities. First we compute spatially sparse, locally optimal rigid transformations between the two images using a new block matching strategy and an efficient numerical optimiser (BOBYQA). Then we derive a dense, regularised velocity field based on these local transformations using matrix logarithms and M-smoothing. These two steps are iterated until convergence and the final diffeomorphic transformation is defined as the exponential of the accumulated velocity field. We show our algorithm to outperform the state-of-the-art log-domain diffeomorphic demons method on dynamic cervical MRI data
