Ballistic transmission through a graphene bilayer

We calculate the Fermi energy dependence of the (time-averaged) current and shot noise in an impurity-free carbon bilayer (length L≪L\ll width WW), and compare with known results for a monolayer. At the Dirac point of charge neutrality, the bilayer transmits as two independent monolayers in parallel: Both current and noise are resonant at twice the monolayer value, so that their ratio (the Fano factor) has the same 1/3 value as in a monolayer -- and the same value as in a diffusive metal. The range of Fermi energies around the Dirac point within which this pseudo-diffusive result holds is smaller, however, in a bilayer than in a monolayer (by a factor l⊥/Ll_{\perp}/L, with l⊥l_{\perp} the interlayer coupling length).Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, version to appear in PR

'The residues of freedom,… tendencies toward true humanism': thoughts on the role of the humanities at the beginning of the twentyfirst century

Remarks from Kant’s third critique, “The Critique of Judgement”, are taken as guidelines to develop a view on works of art as vessels of knowledge and judgements about what the world appears to be, can be and ought to be. In itself, Kant’s remarks amount to a justification of the study of the arts, i.e. it is for the sake of a world where human beings may experience other human beings as companions in the project to sustain human life. The viability of such an endeavour is borne out by, for example, a recent performance of Beethoven in a most adverse context, and by the fact of international treaties in the past decade against some of the most serious violations of human rights. These treaties could not have been possible were it not for the artistic explorations of the tragedies of these violations

This publication presents all the papers read at a conference held at the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education during September 1975. The theme of the conference (initiated by Prof. HJJ . Bingle, at the time rector of the PU for CHE) was formulated as “ Reformed Institutions for Higher Education as a Bulwark for the Kingdom of God — present and future”. The idea of such institutions as a “bulwark for the Kingdom of God" is toned down in the title of this book. The difference in tone may be explained as the result of the difference between a stage of planning and a stage of looking back on what was carried out of that planning. Such a re view of this enterprise cannot be unaccompanied by the feelings of being “sadder but wiser” . Something of this is reflected in the prefatory notes of Prof. Bingle to this book. Experiences of the conference came to be com mitted to paper in this publication and Prof. Bingle remarks very aptly amongst other things that this collection of conference papers reveals a probable “identification of important differences of opinion on Christian Higher Education.” But if this insight meant a revision of the idea of in stitutions for Christian higher education as “bulwarks for the Kingdom of God”, this publication also serves to put on record another experience of the conference: “that there are encouraging signs -of a will to find one another in our common pursuit of an honest appraisal of the Christian principle in higher education”. These proceedings may be viewed (in the words of Prof. Bingle) as a valuable expression and documentation of an “attem pt at ecumenicity within the context of Christian Higher Educa tion”

N.T. van der Merwe as thinker The philosophical legacy of N.T. van der Merwe is characterised as a profound concern for meaning, significance and nuance, especially as they are encountered and preserved in texts. This testifies to his inspiring pleasure in crafting rich texts himself, to his commendably thorough grasp of the history of thought and being filled with wonder and awe at the inexhaustible variety of the creation of God

It is argued in this article that to reduce Marxism to atheism, or to focus exclusively on that aspect of Marx’ thought, as many orthodox Christians do in all good faith, is in many ways counterproductive. Conspiracy theories about Marxism is of no assistance either in working towards a just and peaceful society. Marxist sentiments that do occur in a society should rather be interpreted as an indication of untended social ills. To have only eyes and ears for Marx’ critique of religion might imply the deliberate neglect of social problems, thereby giving credit to that very critique of religion

Calvinisme en Neo-Marxisme: 'n Ideologiekritiek van Calvinisme in Suid-Afrika

An encounter even a confrontation, with Marxism and Neo-Marxism cannot leave Calvinism untouched. Calvinism’s critique of modern Western culture, especially since the Enlightenment, has not prevented leaders in South Africa committed to Calvinism to subscribe uncritically to power ideologies derived from Enlightenment philosophy. A crisis in the course of Calvinism in South Africa has become apparent. Neo-Marxism affords us with categories to analize this problem critically. Calvinism in South Africa should heed the lessons from this exercise in a critique of ideology, and rediscover its own and original humanism
