Quasiprobability methods for multimode conditional optical gates
We present a method for computing the action of conditional linear optical
transformations, conditioned on photon counting, for arbitrary signal states.
The method is based on the Q-function, a quasi probability distribution for
anti normally ordered moments. We treat an arbitrary number of signal and
ancilla modes. The ancilla modes are prepared in an arbitrary product number
state. We construct the conditional, non unitary, signal transformations for an

Uniqueness of Self-Similar Asymptotically Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Spacetime in Brans-Dicke theory
We investigate spherically symmetric self-similar solutions in Brans-Dicke
theory. Assuming a perfect fluid with the equation of state , we show that there are no non-trivial solutions which approach
asymptotically to the flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime if the energy
density is positive. This result suggests that primordial black holes in
Brans-Dicke theory cannot grow at the same rate as the size of the cosmological

Photocatalytic antimicrobial activity of thin surface films of TiO2, CuO and TiO2 /CuO dual layers on Escherichia coli and bacteriophage T4
TiO2 coated surfaces are increasingly studied for their ability to inactivate microorganisms. The activity of glass coated with thin films of TiO2, CuO and hybrid CuO/TiO2 prepared by atmospheric Chemical Vapour Deposition (Ap-CVD) and TiO2 prepared by a sol-gel process was investigated using the inactivation of bacteriophage T4 as a model for
inactivation of viruses. The chemical oxidising activity was also determined by measuring stearic acid oxidation. The results showed that the rate of inactivation of bacteriophage T4 increased with increasing chemical oxidising activity with the maximum rate obtained on
highly active sol-gel preparations. However these were delicate and easily damaged unlike the Ap-CVD coatings. Inactivation rates were highest on CuO and CuO/TiO2 which had the lowest chemical oxidising activities. The inactivation of T4 was higher than that of Escherichia coli on low activity surfaces. The combination of photocatalysis and toxicity of copper acted synergistically to inactivate bacteriophage T4 and retained some selfcleaning activity. The presence of phosphate ions slowed inactivation but NaCl had no effect. The results show that TiO2/CuO coated surfaces are highly antiviral and may have applications in the food and healthcare industries

Hotel Real Estate in a Property Investment Portfolio: An Examination of Results from 1992 to 2001
This paper analyses the performance of five real estate sub-sectors (ofice, retail, industrial, apartment and hotel) over a ten-year (historical) period, 1992 to 2001, in order to assess the impact the hotel sub-sector would have when constructing a multi-property investment portfolio. The research was built on the foundation of modem portfolio theory and data were analyzed using correlation analysis, Sharpe Ratio and a portfolio simulation model. Research results suggest that, at least during the period 1992 to 2001, the hotel sub-sector outperformed all other sub sectors in terms of total returns and also produced the second best riskadjusted returns. The results also suggest that the inclusion of hotels in the real estate investment portfolio had a significant impact on the efficient frontier offering several \u27higher riskr- \u27higher return\u27 target options for an investor. As such the significance of the hotel subsector within a multi-property real estate investment portfolio is better understood
Sex differences in exercise-induced diaphragmatic fatigue in endurance-trained athletes
There is evidence that female athletes may be more susceptible to exercise-induced arterial hypoxemia and expiratory flow limitation and have greater increases in operational lung volumes during exercise relative to men. These pulmonary limitations may ultimately lead to greater levels of diaphragmatic fatigue in women. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to determine whether there are sex differences in the prevalence and severity of exercise-induced diaphragmatic fatigue in 38 healthy endurance-trained men (n = 19; maximal aerobic capacity = 64.0 ± 1.9 ml·kg–1·min–1) and women (n = 19; maximal aerobic capacity = 57.1 ± 1.5 ml·kg–1·min–1). Transdiaphragmatic pressure (Pdi) was calculated as the difference between gastric and esophageal pressures. Inspiratory pressure-time products of the diaphragm and esophagus were calculated as the product of breathing frequency and the Pdi and esophageal pressure time integrals, respectively. Cervical magnetic stimulation was used to measure potentiated Pdi twitches (Pdi,tw) before and 10, 30, and 60 min after a constant-load cycling test performed at 90% of peak work rate until exhaustion. Diaphragm fatigue was considered present if there was a 15% reduction in Pdi,tw after exercise. Diaphragm fatigue occurred in 11 of 19 men (58%) and 8 of 19 women (42%). The percent drop in Pdi,tw at 10, 30, and 60 min after exercise in men (n = 11) was 30.6 ± 2.3, 20.7 ± 3.2, and 13.3 ± 4.5%, respectively, whereas results in women (n = 8) were 21.0 ± 2.1, 11.6 ± 2.9, and 9.7 ± 4.2%, respectively, with sex differences occurring at 10 and 30 min (P < 0.05). Men continued to have a reduced contribution of the diaphragm to total inspiratory force output (pressure-time product of the diaphragm/pressure-time product of the esophagus) during exercise, whereas diaphragmatic contribution in women changed very little over time. The findings from this study point to a female diaphragm that is more resistant to fatigue relative to their male counterparts
Inspiratory muscle training at sea level improves the strength of inspiratory muscles during load carriage in cold-hypoxia
Inspiratory muscle training (IMT) and functional IMT (IMTF: exercise-specific IMT activities) has been unsuccessful in reducing respiratory muscle fatigue following load carriage. IMTF did not include load carriage specific exercises. Fifteen participants split into two groups (training and control) walked 6 km loaded (18.2 kg) at speeds representing ∼50%V̇O2max in cold-hypoxia. The walk was completed at baseline; post 4 weeks IMT and 4 weeks IMTF (five exercises engaging core muscles, three involved load). The training group completed IMT and IMTF at a higher maximal inspiratory pressure (Pimax) than controls. Improvements in Pimax were greater in the training group post-IMT (20.4%, p = .025) and post-IMTF (29.1%, p = .050) compared to controls. Respiratory muscle fatigue was unchanged (p = .643). No other physiological or subjective measures were improved by IMT or IMTF. Both IMT and IMTF increased the strength of respiratory muscles pre-and-post a 6 km loaded walk in cold-hypoxia. Practitioner Summary: To explore the interaction between inspiratory muscle training (IMT), load carriage and environment, this study investigated 4 weeks IMT and 4 weeks functional IMT on respiratory muscle strength and fatigue. Functional IMT improved inspiratory muscle strength pre-and-post a loaded walk in cold-hypoxia but had no more effect than IMT alone. Dynamics and Spatial Genomics of the Nascent Transcriptome by Intron seqFISH
Visualization of the transcriptome and the nuclear organization in situ has been challenging for single-cell analysis. Here, we demonstrate a multiplexed single-molecule in situ method, intron seqFISH, that allows imaging of 10,421 genes at their nascent transcription active sites in single cells, followed by mRNA and lncRNA seqFISH and immunofluorescence. This nascent transcriptome-profiling method can identify different cell types and states with mouse embryonic stem cells and fibroblasts. The nascent sites of RNA synthesis tend to be localized on the surfaces of chromosome territories, and their organization in individual cells is highly variable. Surprisingly, the global nascent transcription oscillated asynchronously in individual cells with a period of 2 hr in mouse embryonic stem cells, as well as in fibroblasts. Together, spatial genomics of the nascent transcriptome by intron seqFISH reveals nuclear organizational principles and fast dynamics in single cells that are otherwise obscured
An Opsonophagocytic Killing Assay for the Evaluation of Group A Streptococcus Vaccine Antisera
Group A Streptococcus (GAS) is a major cause of global mortality, yet there are no licensed GAS vaccines. Vaccine progress has been hampered, in part, by a lack of standardized assays able to quantify antibody function in test antisera. The most widely used assay was developed over 50Â years ago by Rebecca Lancefield and relies on human whole blood as a source of complement and neutrophils. Recently, an opsonophagocytic killing (OPK) assay has been developed for GAS by adapting the OPK methods utilized in Streptococcus pneumoniae vaccine testing. This assay uses dimethylformamide (DMF)-differentiated human promyelocytic leukemia cells (HL-60 cells) as a source of neutrophils and baby rabbit complement, thus removing the major sources of variation in the Lancefield assays. This protocol outlines methods for performing a GAS OPK assay including titering test sera to generate an opsonic index. This in vitro assay could aid in selecting vaccine candidates by demonstrating whether candidate-induced antibodies lead to complement deposition and opsonophagocytic killing
