A Novel Combined System of Direction Estimation and Sound Zooming of Multiple Speakers

This article presents a new system for estimation the direction of multiple speakers and zooming the sound of one of them at a time. The proposed system is a combination of two levels; namely, sound source direction estimation, and acoustic zooming. The sound source direction estimation uses so-called the energetic analysis method for estimation the direction of multiple speakers, whereas the acoustic zooming is based on modifying the parameters of the directional audio coding (DirAC) in order to zoom the sound of a selected speaker among the others. Both listening tests and objective assessments are performed to evaluate this system using different time-frequency transforms

Investigation of Super*Zip separation joint

An investigation to determine the most likely cause of two failures of five tests on 79 inch diameter Lockheed Super*Zip spacecraft separation joints being used for the development of a Shuttle/Centaur propulsion system. This joint utilizes an explosively expanded tube to fracture surrounding prenotched aluminum plates to achieve planar separation. A test method was developed and more than 300 tests firings were made to provide an understanding of severance mechanisms and the functional performance effects of system variables. An approach for defining functional margin was developed, and specific recommendations were made for improving existing and future systems

Advanced emergency openings for commercial aircraft

Explosively actuated openings in composite panels are proposed to enhance passenger survivability within commercial aircraft by providing improvements in emergency openings, fuselage venting, and fuel dump. The concept is to embed a tiny, highly stable explosive cord in the periphery of a load-carrying composite panel; on initiation of the cord, the panel is fractured to create a well-defined opening. The panel would be installed in the sides of the fuselage for passenger egress, in the top of the fuselage for smoke venting, and in the bottoms of the fuel cells for fuel dump. Described are the concerns with the use of explosive systems, safety improvements, advantages, experimental results, and recommended approach to gain acceptance and develop this concept

Determination of pyrotechnic functional margin

Following the failure of a previously qualified pyrotechnically actuated pin puller design, an investigation led to a redesign and requalification. The emphasis of the second qualification was placed on determining the functional margin of the pin puller by comparing the energy deliverable by the pyrotechnic cartridge to the energy required to accomplish the function. Also determined were the effects of functional variables. This paper describes the failure investigation, the test methods employed and the results of the evaluation, and provides a recommended approach to assure the successful functioning of pyrotechnic devices

An apparatus for testing ignitability of an initiator includes a body having a central cavity, an initiator holder for holding the initiator over the central cavity of the body, an ignition material holder disposed in the central cavity of the body and having a cavity facing the initiator holder which receives a measured quantity of ignition material to be ignited by the initiator. It contains a chamber in communication with the cavity of the ignition material and the central cavity of the body, and a measuring system for analyzing pressure characteristics generated by ignition of the ignition material by the initiator. School Counseling in West Virginia: An Examination of School Counselors and Implementation of WV Policy 2315

Since the inception of the profession of school counseling there has been confusion and inconsistency about what the appropriate role of the school counselor should be. Beginning in 2002, the State of West Virginia followed a nationwide movement to attempt to clarify the role of the school counselor by implementing Policy 2315, West Virginia\u27s policy on Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling. However, since the creation of the policy, no statewide study has been conducted to determine if West Virginia school counselors are fully implementing the policy which is based on the American School Counselor Association‟s National Model for school counseling programs. This study found that there remains a great deal of inconsistency and confusion regarding the appropriate role and function of the school counselor in West Virginia. Additionally, this study provides a glimpse into the activities that school counselors in the state find important as well as the frequency with which they work with students on the outcomes in the American School Counselor Association‟s National Standards. The results lay the groundwork for improved professional development and improved higher education training for West Virginia school counselors who work every day to improve the lives of the students with whom they come in contact

The use of career assessments in transition planning: an exploratory study

The Self Directed Search (SDS) and the 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF) were administered to a group of college age students who were either School Psychology graduate students or undergraduate students enrolled in a Career Exploration course at a local, private university. It was hypothesized that the SDS and the 16PF profiles for the students would differ between the two groups, showing that the profiles for those enrolled as School Psychology graduate students would be similar to the career summary codes previously identified for their chosen careers. Independent t-tests showed that on the SDS the School Psychology graduate students scored higher on the Social scale and lower on the Realistic scale, both of which were consistent with the SDS summary codes for the students chosen career. On the 16PF, the School Psychology graduate students were shown to be higher on the primary scales of Factor A (Warmth), and Factor B (Reasoning). They also scored lower on the primary scales Factor L (Vigilance), Factor M (Abstractedness), and Factor N (Privateness). These results were also consistent with the SDS career code that was previously identified for the student’s chosen career. The results of this study are discussed in terms of the usefulness of administering these measures to students who are in the process of transitioning from high school to postsecondary education or the work force
