Invisible Pixels Are Dead, Long Live Invisible Pixels!
Privacy has deteriorated in the world wide web ever since the 1990s. The
tracking of browsing habits by different third-parties has been at the center
of this deterioration. Web cookies and so-called web beacons have been the
classical ways to implement third-party tracking. Due to the introduction of
more sophisticated technical tracking solutions and other fundamental
transformations, the use of classical image-based web beacons might be expected
to have lost their appeal. According to a sample of over thirty thousand images
collected from popular websites, this paper shows that such an assumption is a
fallacy: classical 1 x 1 images are still commonly used for third-party
tracking in the contemporary world wide web. While it seems that ad-blockers
are unable to fully block these classical image-based tracking beacons, the
paper further demonstrates that even limited information can be used to
accurately classify the third-party 1 x 1 images from other images. An average
classification accuracy of 0.956 is reached in the empirical experiment. With
these results the paper contributes to the ongoing attempts to better
understand the lack of privacy in the world wide web, and the means by which

MoodBar: Increasing new user retention in Wikipedia through lightweight socialization
Socialization in online communities allows existing members to welcome and
recruit newcomers, introduce them to community norms and practices, and sustain
their early participation. However, socializing newcomers does not come for
free: in large communities, socialization can result in a significant workload
for mentors and is hard to scale. In this study we present results from an
experiment that measured the effect of a lightweight socialization tool on the
activity and retention of newly registered users attempting to edit for the
first time Wikipedia. Wikipedia is struggling with the retention of newcomers
and our results indicate that a mechanism to elicit lightweight feedback and to
provide early mentoring to newcomers improves their chances of becoming

Individual Differences in Need for Cognition and Decision-Making Competence among Leaders
When making decisions, people sometimes deviate from normative standards. While such deviations may appear to be alarmingly common, examining individual differences may reveal a more nuanced picture. Specifically, the personality factor of need for cognition (i.e., the extent to which people engage in and enjoy effortful cognitive activities; Cacioppo & Petty, 1982) may moderate decision makers’ susceptibility to bias, as could personality factors associated with being a leader. As part of a large-scale assessment of high-level leaders, participants completed a battery of decision-making competence and personality scales. Leaders who scored higher on need for cognition performed better on two of four components of a decision-making competence measure: framing and honoring sunk costs. In addition, the leader sample performed better than published controls. Thus, both individual differences in need for cognition and leadership experience moderate susceptibility to decision biases. Implications for broader theories of individual differences and bias are discussed
Fluctuation-induced traffic congestion in heterogeneous networks
In studies of complex heterogeneous networks, particularly of the Internet,
significant attention was paid to analyzing network failures caused by hardware
faults or overload, where the network reaction was modeled as rerouting of
traffic away from failed or congested elements. Here we model another type of
the network reaction to congestion -- a sharp reduction of the input traffic
rate through congested routes which occurs on much shorter time scales. We
consider the onset of congestion in the Internet where local mismatch between
demand and capacity results in traffic losses and show that it can be described
as a phase transition characterized by strong non-Gaussian loss fluctuations at
a mesoscopic time scale. The fluctuations, caused by noise in input traffic,
are exacerbated by the heterogeneous nature of the network manifested in a
scale-free load distribution. They result in the network strongly overreacting
to the first signs of congestion by significantly reducing input traffic along
the communication paths where congestion is utterly negligible.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

A two-dimensional, two-electron model atom in a laser pulse: exact treatment, single active electron-analysis, time-dependent density functional theory, classical calculations, and non-sequential ionization
Owing to its numerical simplicity, a two-dimensional two-electron model atom,
with each electron moving in one direction, is an ideal system to study
non-perturbatively a fully correlated atom exposed to a laser field. Frequently
made assumptions, such as the ``single active electron''- approach and
calculational approximations, e.g. time dependent density functional theory or
(semi-) classical techniques, can be tested. In this paper we examine the
multiphoton short pulse-regime. We observe ``non-sequential'' ionization, i.e.\
double ionization at lower field strengths as expected from a sequential,
single active electron-point of view. Since we find non-sequential ionization
also in purely classical simulations, we are able to clarify the mechanism
behind this effect in terms of single particle trajectories. PACS Number(s):

Gene identification for the cblD defect of vitamin B12 metabolism
Background Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is an essential cofactor in several metabolic pathways. Intracellular conversion of cobalamin to its two coenzymes, adenosylcobalamin in mitochondria and methylcobalamin in the cytoplasm, is necessary for the homeostasis of methylmalonic acid and homocysteine. Nine defects of intracellular cobalamin metabolism have been defined by means of somatic complementation analysis. One of these defects, the cblD defect, can cause isolated methylmalonic aciduria, isolated homocystinuria, or both. Affected persons present with multisystem clinical abnormalities, including developmental, hematologic, neurologic, and metabolic findings. The gene responsible for the cblD defect has not been identified.
Methods We studied seven patients with the cblD defect, and skin fibroblasts from each were investigated in cell culture. Microcell-mediated chromosome transfer and refined genetic mapping were used to localize the responsible gene. This gene was transfected into cblD fibroblasts to test for the rescue of adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin synthesis.
Results The cblD gene was localized to human chromosome 2q23.2, and a candidate gene, designated MMADHC (methylmalonic aciduria, cblD type, and homocystinuria), was identified in this region. Transfection of wild-type MMADHC rescued the cellular phenotype, and the functional importance of mutant alleles was shown by means of transfection with mutant constructs. The predicted MMADHC protein has sequence homology with a bacterial ATP-binding cassette transporter and contains a putative cobalamin binding motif and a putative mitochondrial targeting sequence.
Conclusions Mutations in a gene we designated MMADHC are responsible for the cblD defect in vitamin B12 metabolism. Various mutations are associated with each of the three biochemical phenotypes of the disorder
A composite system approach to aircraft cabin fire safety
The thermochemical and flammability characteristics of two polymeric composites currently in use and seven others being considered for use as aircraft interior panels are described. The properties studied included: (1) limiting oxygen index of the composite constituents; (2) fire containment capability of the composite; (3) smoke evolution from the composite; (4) thermogravimetric analysis; (5) composition of the volatile products of thermal degradation; and (6) relative toxicity of the volatile products of pyrolysis. The performance of high temperature laminating resins such as bismaleimides is compared with the performance of phenolics and epoxies. The relationship of increased fire safety with the use of polymers with high anaerobic char yield is shown. Processing parameters of one of the baremaleimide composites are detailed
Ejection Energy of Photoelectrons in Strong Field Ionization
We show that zero ejection energy of the photoelectrons is classically
impossible for hydrogen-like ions, even when field ionization occurs
adiabatically. To prove this we transform the basic equations to those
describing two 2D anharmonic oscillators. The same method yields an alternative
way to derive the anomalous critical field of hydrogen-like ions. The
analytical results are confirmed and illustrated by numerical simulations. PACS
