    The most complete and detailed X-ray view of the SNR Puppis A

    With the purpose of producing the first detailed full view of Puppis A in X-rays, we carried out new XMM-Newton observations covering the missing regions in the southern half of the supernova remnant (SNR) and combined them with existing XMM-Newton and Chandra data. The new images were produced in the 0.3-0.7, 0.7-1.0 and 1.0-8.0 energy bands. We investigated the SNR morphology in detail, carried out a multi-wavelength analysis and estimated the flux density and luminosity of the whole SNR. The complex structure observed across the remnant confirms that Puppis A evolves in an inhomogeneous, probably knotty interstellar medium. The southwestern corner includes filaments that perfectly correlate with radio features suggested to be associated with shock/cloud interaction. In the northern half of Puppis A the comparison with Spitzer infrared images shows an excellent correspondence between X-rays and 24 and 70 microns emission features, while to the south there are some matched and other unmatched features. X-ray flux densities of 12.6 X 10^-9, 6.2 X 10^-9, and 2.8 X 10^-9 erg cm^-2 s^-1 were derived for the 0.3-0.7, 0.7-1.0 and 1.0-8.0 keV bands, respectively. At the assumed distance of 2.2 kpc, the total X-ray luminosity between 0.3 and 8.0 keV is 1.2 X 10^37 erg s^-1. We also collected and updated the broad-band data of Puppis A between radio and GeV gamma-ray range, producing its spectral energy distribution. To provide constraints to the high-energy emission models, we re-analyzed radio data, estimating the energy content in accelerated particles to be Umin=4.8 X 10^49 erg and the magnetic field strength B=26 muG.Comment: Article accepted to be published in the Astronomy and Astrophysics Main Journa

    On the Reliability of Cross Correlation Function Lag Determinations in Active Galactic Nuclei

    Many AGN exhibit a highly variable luminosity. Some AGN also show a pronounced time delay between variations seen in their optical continuum and in their emission lines. In effect, the emission lines are light echoes of the continuum. This light travel-time delay provides a characteristic radius of the region producing the emission lines. The cross correlation function (CCF) is the standard tool used to measure the time lag between the continuum and line variations. For the few well-sampled AGN, the lag ranges from 1-100 days, depending upon which line is used and the luminosity of the AGN. In the best sampled AGN, NGC 5548, the H_beta lag shows year-to-year changes, ranging from about 8.7 days to about 22.9 days over a span of 8 years. In this paper it is demonstrated that, in the context of AGN variability studies, the lag estimate using the CCF is biased too low and subject to a large variance. Thus the year-to-year changes of the measured lag in NGC 5548 do not necessarily imply changes in the AGN structure. The bias and large variance are consequences of finite duration sampling and the dominance of long timescale trends in the light curves, not due to noise or irregular sampling. Lag estimates can be substantially improved by removing low frequency power from the light curves prior to computing the CCF.Comment: To appear in the PASP, vol 111, 1999 Nov; 37 pages; 10 figure

    The Reproducibility of Ultrasonographic Findings of Rectosigmoid Endometriosis Among Examiners With Different Level of Expertise

    Objective: To analyze the reproducibility of ultrasonographic (US) findings of rectosigmoid endometriosis among examiners with different level of expertise using stored three-dimensional (3D) volumes of the posterior compartment of the pelvis as a part of SANABA (Sardinia-Navarra-Barcelona) collaborative study. Materials and methods: Six examiners in 3 academic Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, with different levels of experience and blinded to each other, evaluated 60 stored 3D volumes from the posterior compartment of the pelvis and looked for the presence or absence of features of rectosigmoid endometriotic lesions defined as an irregular hypoechoic nodule with or without hypoechoic foci at the level of the muscularis propria of the anterior wall rectum sigma. Multiplanar view and virtual navigation were used. All examiners had to assess the 3D volume of posterior compartment of the pelvis and classify it as present or absent disease. To analyze intra-observer and the inter-observer agreements, each examiner performed the assessment twice with a 2-week interval between the first and second assessments. Reproducibility was assessed by calculating the weighted Kappa index. Results: Intra-observer reproducibility was moderate to very good for all observers (Kappa index ranging from 0.49 to 0.96) associated with a good diagnostic accuracy of each reader. Inter-observer reproducibility was fair to very good (Kappa index range: 0.21–0.87). Conclusions: The typical US sign of rectosigmoid endometriosis is reasonably recognizable to observers with different level of expertise when assessed in stored 3D volumes

    The contribution of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies to the soft X-ray background

    The ROSAT Ultradeep HRI survey in the Lockman Hole contains a complete sample of 91 X-ray sources with fluxes in the 0.5-2 keV band larger than 1.2 times 10e-15 erg cm-2 s-1, where over about 75 per cent of the sources are quasars or Seyfert galaxies. During the course of our optical identification work, we have obtained optical spectra of 67 narrow emission line galaxies (NELG), which are physically not associated with the X-ray sources. We have derived the equivalent width (EW) and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) for the most prominent emission lines of 41 quasars and Seyfert galaxies taken from the ROSAT Deep Survey (RDS), which has a flux limit of 5.5 times 10e-15 erg cm-2 s-1 in the 0.5-2.0 keV band. Furthermore we have obtained the EW and FWHM values of the field NELGs. Here we present the spectroscopic discrimination between RDS Seyfert galaxies and field galaxies (NELG). The analysis of the emission lines has revealed that a single object out of 69 spectroscopically identified AGN fits the optical criteria of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1).     HST STIS Ultraviolet Spectral Evidence for Outflow in Extreme Narrow-line Seyfert 1 Galaxies: I. Data and Analysis

    We present HST STIS observations of two extreme NLS1s, IRAS 13224-3809 and 1H 0707-495. The spectra are characterized by very blue continua, broad, strongly blueshifted high-ionization lines (including \ion{C}{4} and \ion{N}{5}), and narrow, symmetric intermediate- (including \ion{C}{3}], \ion{Si}{3}], \ion{Al}{3}) and low-ionization (e.g., \ion{Mg}{2}) lines centered at their rest wavelengths. The emission-line profiles suggest that the high-ionization lines are produced in a wind, and the intermediate- and low-ionization lines are produced in low-velocity gas associated with the accretion disk or base of the wind. In this paper, we present the analysis of the spectra from these two objects; in a companion paper we present photoionization analysis and a toy dynamical model for the wind. The highly asymmetric profile of \ion{C}{4} suggests that it is dominated by emission from the wind, so we develop a template for the wind from the \ion{C}{4} line. We model the bright emission lines in the spectra using a combination of this template, and a narrow, symmetric line centered at the rest wavelength. We also analyzed a comparison sample of HST spectra from 14 additional NLS1s, and construct a correlation matrix of emission line and continuum properties.     Dynamics of the Lyman alpha and C IV emitting gas in 3C 273

    In this paper we study the variability properties of the Lyman alpha and C IV emission lines in 3C273 using archival IUE observations. Our data show for the first time the existence of variability on time scales of several years. We study the spatial distribution and the velocity field of the emitting gas by performing detailed analyses on the line variability using correlations, 1D and 2D response functions, and principal component analysis. In both lines we find evidence for two components, one which has the dynamic properties of gas in Keplerian motion around a black hole with a mass of the order of 10^9 Mo, and one which is characterized by high, blue-shifted velocities at large lag. There is no indication of the presence of optically thick emission medium neither in the Lya, nor in the Civ response functions. The component characterized by blue-shifted velocities, which is comparatively much stronger in Civ than in Lya, is more or less compatible with being the result of gas falling towards the central black hole with free-fall acceleration. We propose however that the line emission at high, blue-shifted velocities is better explained in terms of entrainment of gas clouds by the jet. This gas is therefore probably collisionally excited as a result of heating due to the intense infrared radiation from the jet, which would explain the strength of this component in Civ relative to Lya.
