    XRD-thermal combined analyses: An approach to evaluate the potential of phytoremediation, phytomining, and biochar production

    A method for evaluating the potential of reuse of biomasses for economic purposes is here presented starting from a case study. Juncus acutus plants and rhizospheres were harvested from abandoned Zn-Pb mine areas of southwest Sardinia (Italy). Thermogravimetry and Differential Thermal analyses were performed to evaluate the temperatures at which significant reactions occur. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis was carried out on raw samples and on samples heated ex-situ (by a conventional diffractometer) or in-situ (by synchrotron-based diffraction). Raw samples mainly consist of quartz, phyllosilicates, and feldspars with minor amounts of sulfides, sulfates, and Fe, Pb, and Zn carbonates, concentrated in the rhizosphere. After heating, Zn and Fe oxides and willemite are observed in internal roots and stems, revealing the presence of these metals in the plant tissues. In-situ heating was less effective than ex-situ in revealing minor phases in organic samples, probably because the scarcity of oxygen within the sample holder did not allow the degradation of organic compounds and the oxidation of sulfides, resulting in a low quality XRD signal even if obtained with the high resolution ensured by a synchrotron light source. This method can be applied to plants from polluted sites for metal exploitation, and/or to biomasses from unpolluted sites for biochar production, since both applications take advantage of the knowledge of the minerals formed after heating

    O artigo analisa e compara o anticomunismo católico no Brasil e nos Estados Unidos no período da Guerra Fria. Depois de situar o campo de estudos constituído no Brasil sobre o tema, discute as relações entre americanismo e anticomunismo, procurando situar o catolicismo norte-americano neste meio. Utiliza-se de uma produção recente sobre cultura da Guerra Fria nos Estados Unidos. Levanta, finalmente, uma série de elementos de comparação sobre a forma que o anticomunismo católico assumiu nos dois países.<br>This article analyses and compares the Catholic anticommunism in the Brazil and in United States during the Cold War years. After showing the recent studies produced in Brazil about the fight against communism, it discusses the relationship between Americanism, anticommunism and Catholicism. This step is based on recent historical research about the Cold War culture in the United States. Finally, it makes comparisons between the forms that anticommunism assumed in each country

    Impact of rock fabric, thermal behavior, and carbonate decomposition kinetics on quicklime industrial production and slaking reactivity

    This paper deals with thermal analyses, burning trials and reactivity tests on 15 carbonate rocks, i.e., pure and impure carbonates, mud-supported and grain-supported limestones, crystalline marbles, and dolomites, used for the production of different lime products in industrial vertical shaft kilns worldwide. In particular, thermogravimetric and differential thermogravimetric analysis (TG–DTG) on massive (80–120&nbsp;g) fine-grained (&lt; 3.35&nbsp;mm) samples allowed the extrapolation of the Arrhenius kinetic parameters, i.e., the (apparent) activation energy (Ea) and the pre-exponential or frequency factor (A). Other calcination parameters, i.e., the duration time, starting and ending calcination times and temperatures, and peaks of maximum calcination rate were also extrapolated in order to enhance their relationships with quicklime reactivity. Moreover, thermal analyses (TG–DTG–DTA) were repeated on powders (90&nbsp;mg) using a more accurate analyzer to compare results. The study is completed by a thorough chemical–physical and mineralogical–petrographic characterization of carbonate rocks and derived burnt products. Results pointed out that medium-to-coarse crystalline materials, i.e., grain-supported limestones, diagenetic dolomites, and granoblastic marbles presented the highest activation energy, burnability and slaking reactivity. Conversely, microcrystalline carbonates with the highest micrite-to-sparite ratio, i.e., mud-supported limestones, and impure carbonates, enriched in quartz, clay minerals, and other subordinated non-carbonate impurities, presented the lowest activation energy, burnability, and slaking reactivity. This study also investigated the effect of BET-specific surface area and real density, depending on specific sintering tendency, on quicklime reactivity. Results from this multidisciplinary research activity put further constraints on carbonate rocks calcination kinetics and their suitability in the lime industry
