Earth's oldest mantle fabrics indicate Eoarchaean subduction
The extension of subduction processes into the Eoarchaean era (4.0-3.6 Ga) is controversial. The oldest reported terrestrial olivine, from two dunite lenses within the ~3,720 Ma Isua supracrustal belt in Greenland, record a shape-preferred orientation of olivine crystals defining a weak foliation and a well-defined lattice-preferred orientation (LPO). [001] parallel to the maximum finite elongation direction and (010) perpendicular to the foliation plane define a B-type LPO. In the modern Earth such fabrics are associated with deformation of mantle rocks in the hanging wall of subduction systems; an interpretation supported by experiments. Here we show that the presence of B-type fabrics in the studied Isua dunites is consistent with a mantle origin and a supra-subduction mantle wedge setting, the latter supported by compositional data from nearby mafic rocks. Our results provide independent microstructural data consistent with the operation of Eoarchaean subduction and indicate that microstructural analyses of ancient ultramafic rocks provide a valuable record of Archaean geodynamics
Oligo-Miocene exhumation of the Beni-Bousera peridotite through a lithosphere-scale extensional shear zone
New structural data and P-T estimates of syn-deformational assemblages within the Beni Bousera peridotites and their crustal envelope are used to explain their Alpine exhumation. The Beni Bousera peridotites occur as thin sheets within high grade crustal units of the lower Sebtides (inner Rif, Morocco) and are composed of weakly deformed spinel lherzolite in the core of the massif and garnet-spinel mylonite at the rim. The main foliation trajectories in both the peridotites and overlying crustal units show systematic rotation towards their mutual contact, indicating a kilometer-scale top to the NW shearing with a dextral component along this crust/mantle contact. Widespread top to the NW shear criteria within the crustal units overlying the peridotite support this feature. Available ages constrain the development of the main foliation in both the peridotites and crustal rocks between 25 and 20 Ma. New P-T data from the peridotites show that deformation occurs during decompression from approximate to 22 kbar, 1050 degrees C to approximate to 9-15 kbar, 800 degrees C. As a consequence, exhumation of the Beni Bousera peridotites takes place during the Oligo-Miocene lithosphere thinning in the footwall of a lithospheric extensional shear zone. The exceptional preservation of garnet within the mylonitic peridotites results from rapid cooling of the border of the massif due to the juxtaposition with colder crustal rocks along this shear zone. Uplifting of the hot mantle rocks simultaneously induces high temperature metamorphism in the overlying crustal units. These new findings allow us to reconstruct the deformation history of the Beni Bousera region and the Alboran domain in the framework of the western Mediterranean geodynamics during the last 40 Myrs.. Potent Antihematozoan Activity of Novel Bisthiazolium Drug T16: Evidence for Inhibition of Phosphatidylcholine Metabolism in Erythrocytes Infected with Babesia and Plasmodium spp.
A leading bisthiazolium drug, T16, designed to mimic choline, was shown to exert potent antibabesial activity, with 50% inhibitory concentrations of 28 and 7 nM against Babesia divergens and B. canis, respectively. T16 accumulated inside Babesia-infected erythrocytes (cellular accumulation ratio, >60) by a saturable process with an apparent K(m) of 0.65 ÎĽM. Subcellular fractionation of Babesia parasites revealed the accumulation of T16 into a low-density fraction, while in malaria-infected erythrocytes a significant fraction of the drug was associated with heme malaria pigment. T16 exerts an early and specific inhibition of the de novo biosynthesis of phosphatidylcholine both in B. divergens- and Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes. Choline accumulation into isolated Babesia parasites was highly sensitive to inhibition by T16. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that bisthiazolium drugs target the de novo phosphatidylcholine biosynthesis of intraerythrocytic hematozoan parasites. In malaria parasites, which generate ferriprotoporphyrin IX during hemoglobin digestion, T16 binding to heme may enhance the accumulation and activity of the drug. The selectivity of accumulation and potent activity of this class of drug into parasite-infected erythrocytes offers unique advantages over more traditional antihematozoan drugs
