The Perfect Binary One-Error-Correcting Codes of Length 15: Part II--Properties

A complete classification of the perfect binary one-error-correcting codes of length 15 as well as their extensions of length 16 was recently carried out in [P. R. J. \"Osterg{\aa}rd and O. Pottonen, "The perfect binary one-error-correcting codes of length 15: Part I--Classification," IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory vol. 55, pp. 4657--4660, 2009]. In the current accompanying work, the classified codes are studied in great detail, and their main properties are tabulated. The results include the fact that 33 of the 80 Steiner triple systems of order 15 occur in such codes. Further understanding is gained on full-rank codes via switching, as it turns out that all but two full-rank codes can be obtained through a series of such transformations from the Hamming code. Other topics studied include (non)systematic codes, embedded one-error-correcting codes, and defining sets of codes. A classification of certain mixed perfect codes is also obtained.Comment: v2: fixed two errors (extension of nonsystematic codes, table of coordinates fixed by symmetries of codes), added and extended many other result

A Sensitive Faraday Rotation Setup Using Triple Modulation

    Get PDF
The utilization of polarized targets in scattering experiments has become a common practice in many major accelerator laboratories. Noble gases are especially suitable for such applications, since they can be easily hyper-polarized using spin exchange or metastable pumping techniques. Polarized helium-3 is a very popular target because it often serves as an effective polarized neutron due to its simple nuclear structure. A favorite cell material to generate and store polarized helium-3 is GE-180, a relatively dense aluminosilicate glass. In this paper, we present a Faraday rotation method, using a new triple modulation technique, where the measurement of the Verdet constants of SF57 flint glass, pyrex glass, and air were tested. The sensitivity obtained shows that this technique may be implemented in future cell wall characterization and thickness measurements. We also discuss the first ever extraction of the Verdet constant of GE-180 glass for four wavelength values of 632 nm, 773 nm, 1500 nm, and 1547 nm, whereupon the expected 1/{\lambda}^{2} dependence was observed.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures Updated version for RSI submissio

Complex permeability of soft magnetic ferrite polyester resin composites at frequencies above 1 MHz

    Get PDF
Composite soft magnetic materials consist of magnetic particles in a non-magnetic matrix. The properties of such materials can be modelled using effective medium theory. Measurements have been made of the complex permeability of composites produced using ferrite powder and polyester resin. The success of various effective medium expressions in predicting the variation of complex permeability with composition has been assessed

Performance of a ballute decelerator towed behind a jet airplane

    Get PDF
An F-104B airplane was modified to investigate the drag and stability characteristics of a ballute decelerator in the wake of an asymmetrical airplane. Decelerator deployments were initiated at a Mach number of 1.3 and an altitude of 15,240 meters (50,000 feet) and terminated when the airplane had decelerated to a Mach number of 0.5. The flight tests indicated that the decelerator had a short inflation time with relatively small opening forces. The drag levels attained with the subject decelerator were less than those obtained with other high-speed decelerators behind a symmetrical tow vehicle. The ballute demonstrated good stability characteristics behind the testbed airplane
