The characteristics of any environment vary widely in relation with the topography, being an indispensable factor to take into account in any study, and more specifically in the mining range of Cartagena - La Unión. It is a semiarid area in which, historically, large mining activity has changed all its morphological components (relief, slope, etc..), being of special interest the classification of its geomorphological elements. The data used in the classifications were derived from a four-meter grid LIDAR- DEM. Firstly, we perform an approximation to the reality of the study area by unsupervised classification, using the ISODATA (Iterative Self- Organizing Data Analysis Technique) algorithm cluster technique, introducing the topographic attributes derived directly from the DEM to characterize classes. Also a supervised classification based on training areas of the main geomorphological elements is performed

The application of terrestrial laser scanner and SfM photogrammetry in measuring erosion and deposition processes in two opposite slopes in a humid Badlands area (Central Spanish Pyrenees)

Erosion and deposition processes in badland areas are usually estimated using traditional observations of topographic changes, measured by erosion pins or profile metres (invasive techniques). In recent times, remote-sensing techniques (non-invasive) have been routinely applied in geomorphology studies, especially in erosion studies. These techniques provide the opportunity to build high-resolution topographic models at centimetre accuracy. By comparing different 3-D point clouds of the same area, obtained at different time intervals, the variations in the terrain and temporal dynamics can be analysed. The aim of this study is to assess and compare the functioning of terrestrial laser scanner (TLS, RIEGL LPM-321) and structure-from-motion photogrammetry (SfM) techniques (Camera FUJIFILM, Finepix x100 and software PhotoScan by AgiSoft) to evaluate erosion and deposition processes in two opposite slopes in a humid badlands area in the central Spanish Pyrenees. Results showed that TLS data sets and SfM photogrammetry techniques provide new opportunities in geomorphological erosion studies. The data we recorded over 1 year demonstrated that north-facing slopes experienced more intense and faster changing geomorphological dynamics than south-facing slopes as well as the highest erosion rates. Different seasonal processes were observed, with the highest topographic differences observed during winter periods and the high-intensity rainfalls in summer. While TLS provided the highest accuracy models, SfM photogrammetry was still a faster methodology in the field and precise at short distances. Both techniques present advantages and disadvantages, and do not require direct contact with the soil and thus prevent the usual surface disturbance of traditional and invasive methods

In Silico Design and Selection of New Tetrahydroisoquinoline-Based CD44 Antagonist Candidates

CD44 promotes metastasis, chemoresistance, and stemness in different types of cancer and is a target for the development of new anti-cancer therapies. All CD44 isoforms share a common N-terminal domain that binds to hyaluronic acid (HA). Herein, we used a computational approach to design new potential CD44 antagonists and evaluate their target-binding ability. By analyzing 30 crystal structures of the HA-binding domain (CD44HAbd), we characterized a subdomain that binds to 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (THQ)-containing compounds and is adjacent to residues essential for HA interaction. By computational combinatorial chemistry (CCC), we designed 168,190 molecules and compared their conformers to a pharmacophore containing the key features of the crystallographic THQ binding mode. Approximately 0.01% of the compounds matched the pharmacophore and were analyzed by computational docking and molecular dynamics (MD). We identified two compounds, Can125 and Can159, that bound to human CD44HAbd (hCD44HAbd) in explicit-solvent MD simulations and therefore may elicit CD44 blockage. These compounds can be easily synthesized by multicomponent reactions for activity testing and their binding mode, reported here, could be helpful in the design of more potent CD44 antagonists

Pressure-Induced Phase-Transition Sequence In Cof 2 : An Experimental And First-Principles Study On The Crystal, Vibrational, And Electronic Properties

We report a complete structural study of CoF2 under pressure. Its crystal structure and vibrational and electronic properties have been studied both theoretically and experimentally using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) methods, x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption at Co K-edge experiments, Raman spectroscopy, and optical absorption in the 0–80 GPa range. We have determined the structural phase-transition sequence in CoF2 and corresponding transition pressures. The results are similar to other transition-metal difluorides such as FeF2 but different to ZnF2 and MgF2, despite that the Co2+ size (ionic radius) is similar to Zn2+ and Mg2+. We found that the complete phase-transition sequence is tetragonal rutile (P42/mnm) → CaCl2 type (orthorhombic Pnnm) → distorted PdF2 (orthorhombic Pbca)+PdF2 (cubic Pa3¯) in coexistence → fluorite (cubic Fm3¯m) → cotunnite (orthorhombic Pnma). It was observed that the structural phase transition to the fluorite at 15 GPa involves a drastic change of coordination from sixfold octahedral to eightfold cubic with important modifications in the vibrational and electronic properties. We show that the stabilization of this high-pressure cubic phase is possible under nonhydrostatic conditions since ideal hydrostaticity would stabilize the distorted-fluorite structure (tetragonal I4/mmm) instead. Although the first rutile → CaCl2-type second-order phase transition is subtle by Raman spectroscopy, it was possible to define it through the broadening of the Eg Raman mode which is split in the CaCl2-type phase. First-principles DFT calculations are in fair agreement with the experimental Raman mode frequencies, thus providing an accurate description for all vibrational modes and elastic properties of CoF2 as a function of pressure

Relativistic quantum mechanics of a Dirac oscillator

    Get PDF
The Dirac oscillator is an exactly soluble model recently introduced in the context of many particle models in relativistic quantum mechanics. The model has been also considered as an interaction term for modelling quark confinement in quantum chromodynamics. These considerations should be enough for demonstrating that the Dirac oscillator can be an excellent example in relativistic quantum mechanics. In this paper we offer a solution to the problem and discuss some of its properties. We also discuss a physical picture for the Dirac oscillator's non-standard interaction, showing how it arises on describing the behaviour of a neutral particle carrying an anomalous magnetic moment and moving inside an uniformly charged sphere.Comment: 19 pages, 1 figur
