    The Sum is Greater Than its Parts: An Autoethnographic Study of Multiracial Men in Higher Education Staff Roles

    This qualitative, autoethnographic study sought to understand how multiracial men working in higher education staff roles described their experiences of racial identity. Eight participants, staff members at various higher education institutions across the United States, comprised the study population, including the study author. I conducted semi-structured interviews followed by photo-elicitation interviews with each participant between Fall 2022 and Spring 2023. I analyzed the interview transcripts with an open coding process. I grouped the resulting codes into categories that resulted in the emergence of three major themes that described the way participants experienced their racial identity. The first theme that emerged from the data analysis was the lens of the workplace. The second theme that emerged was the lens of negative experiences. The third and final theme that emerged was the desire for a better future. I utilized Renn’s (2004) Ecological Model and Baxter Magolda’s (2001) Self-Authorship Framework to analyze and interpret the findings. This study provides insights and recommendations around for understanding and supporting the multiracial population for individuals and organizations within the field of higher education

    A constrained pressure-temperature residual (CPTR) method for non-isothermal multiphase flow in porous media

    For both isothermal and thermal petroleum reservoir simulation, the Constrained Pressure Residual (CPR) method is the industry-standard preconditioner. This method is a two-stage process involving the solution of a restricted pressure system. While initially designed for the isothermal case, CPR is also the standard for thermal cases. However, its treatment of the energy conservation equation does not incorporate heat diffusion, which is often dominant in thermal cases. In this paper, we present an extension of CPR: the Constrained Pressure-Temperature Residual (CPTR) method, where a restricted pressure-temperature system is solved in the first stage. In previous work, we introduced a block preconditioner with an efficient Schur complement approximation for a pressure-temperature system. Here, we extend this method for multiphase flow as the first stage of CPTR.     Algin, a salt of alginic acid extracted from kelp, and gelatin, produced from animal bones and skins, are used as stabilizing agents in the manufacture of ice cream and in certain other food products. Studies were conducted over a period of 10 weeks to determine the nutritive effects of the vegetable gum of algin and the protein of gelatin. The apparent digestibility of algin varied directly with the level fed. Algin was utilized efficiently after absorption. Gelatin was highly digested irrespective of the level fed, but more food was required per unit increase in live weight. No characteriztic symptoms were noted that couldbe attributed to acute or chroninic toxicity. Both algin and gelatin were found to be wholesome foods

    Collision Detection in Cluttered Driving Scenes

    The purpose of the present experiment was to examine whether drivers’ detection of collisions was altered when the driving scene was cluttered with scene objects. In this experiment stationary scene objects were manipulated by positioning them behind an approaching object and driver motion induced. We found that observers’ collision detection performance (d’) decreased with the presence of scene objects. These results indicate that the ability to detect a collision is altered by the presence of scene objects. In addition, performance was dependent on display duration, with greater sensitivity at increased durations. Moreover, the results showed a significant criterion shift between scene objects present and scene objects absent, with a decrease in identifying a collision object (hit rate) when scene objects were present but no difference in identification of a collision event when scene objects were absent. This suggests that the decreased performance was due to the inability to accurately determine a collision event because of apparent motion of background scene objects due to driver motion. Because the displays used in this experiment are akin to driving in a cluttered environment, the results of this research have important implications regarding driving safety and crash rates particularly in urban environments with complex scenes. Specifically, the results suggest that one factor in cluttered driving scenes is the apparent motion of background scene objects due to driver motion

    Mathematical modelling of tissue-engineering angiogenesis

    We present a mathematical model for the vascularisation of a porous scaffold following implantation in vivo. The model is given as a set of coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) which describe the evolution in time of the amounts of the different tissue constituents inside the scaffold. Bifurcation analyses reveal how the extent of scaffold vascularisation changes as a function of the parameter values. For example, it is shown how the loss of seeded cells arising from slow infiltration of vascular tissue can be overcome using a prevascularisation strategy consisting of seeding the scaffold with vascular cells. Using certain assumptions it is shown how the system can be simplified to one which is partially tractable and for which some analysis is given. Limited comparison is also given of the model solutions with experimental data from the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay

    A high performance test of differential gene expression for oligonucleotide arrays

    Logit-t employs a logit-transformation for normalization followed by statistical testing at the probe-level. Using four publicly-available datasets, together providing 2,710 known positive incidences of differential expression and 2,913,813 known negative incidences, performance of statistical tests were: Logit-t provided 75% positive-predictive value, compared with 5% for Affymetrix Microarray Suite 5, 6% for dChip perfect match (PM)-only, and 9% for Robust Multi-array Analysis at the p < 0.01 threshold. Logit-t provided 70% sensitivity, Microarray Suite 5 provided 46%, dChip provided 53% and Robust Multi-array Analysis provided 63%
