    Patients present to the emergency department (ED) with a wide range of complaints and ED clinicians are responsible for identifying which conditions are life threatening. Cardiac monitoring strategies in the ED include, but are not limited to, 12-lead electrocardiography and bedside cardiac monitoring for arrhythmia and ischemia detection as well as QT-interval monitoring. ED nurses are in a unique position to incorporate cardiac monitoring into the early triage and risk stratification of patients with cardiovascular emergencies to optimize patient management and outcomes

    Identification, characterization, and localization to Chromosome 17q21-22 of the human TBX2 homolog, member of a conserved developmental gene family

    The T-box motif is present in a family of gene whose structural features and expression patterns support their involvement in developmental gene regulation. Previously, sequence comparisons among the T-box domains of ten vertebrate and invertebrate T-box ( Tbx ) genes established a phylogenetic tree with three major branches. The Tbx2 -related branch includes mouse Mm-Tbx2 and Mm-Tbx3, Drosophila optomotor-blind ( Dm-Omb ), and Caenorhabditis elegans Ce-Tbx2 and Ce-Tbx7 genes. From the localization of Mm-Tbx2 to Chromosome (Chr) 11, we focused our search for the human homolog, Hs-TBX2, within a region of synteny conservation on Chr 17q. We used Dm-Omb polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers to amplify a 137-basepair (bp) product from human genomic, Chr 17 monochromosome hybrid, and fetal kidney cDNA templates. The human PCR product showed 89% DNA sequence identity and 100% petide sequence identity to the corresponding T-box segment of Mm-Tbx2 . The putative Hs-TBX2 locus was isolated within a YAC contig that included three anonymous markers, D17S792, D17S794 , and D17S948 , located at Chr 17q21-22. Hybridization-and PCR-based screening of a 15-week fetal kidney cDNA library yielded several TBX2 clones. Sequence analysis of clone λcTBX2-1 confirmed homology to Mm-Tbx2 -90% DNA sequence identity over 283 nt, and 96% peptide sequence identity over 94 amino acids. Similar analysis of Hs-TBX2 cosmid 15F11 confirmed the cDNA coding sequence and also identified a 1.7-kb intron located at the same relative position as in Mm-Tbx2 . Phylogenetic analyses of the T-box domain sequences found in several vertebrate and invertebrate species further suggested that the putative human TBX2 and mouse Tbx2 are true homologs. Northern blot analysis identified two major TBX2 transcripts of 3.5 and 2.8kb, with high levels of TBX2 expression in fetal kidney and lung; and in adult kidney, lung, ovary, prostate, spleen, and testis. Reduced expression levels were seen in heart, white blood cells, small intestine, and thymus.     Production and Decay of the Ge73-m Metastable State in a Low-Background Germanium Detector

    The 73m\ge73m metastable states decay with a very characteristic signature which allow them to be tagged event-by-event. Studies were performed using data taken with a high-purity germanium detector in a low-background laboratory near a nuclear power reactor core where \nuebar-flux was 6.4×1012 cm2s1\rm{6.4 \times 10^{12} ~ cm^{-2} s^{-1}}. The measured average and equilibrium production rates of 73m\ge73m were (8.7±0.4)\rm{(8.7 \pm 0.4)} and (6.7±0.3) kg1day1\rm{(6.7 \pm 0.3) ~ kg^{-1} day^{-1}}, respectively. The production channels were studied and identified. By studying the difference in the production of 73m\ge73m between the reactor ON and OFF spectra, the limiting sensitivities at the range of 10421043 cm2\rm{\sim 10^{-42} - 10^{-43} ~ cm^2} for the cross-sections of neutrino-induced nuclear transitions were derived. The dominant background are due to β\beta-decays of cosmic-ray induced 73^{73}Ga. The prospects of enhancing the sensitivities at underground locations are discussed.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figure

    Parton energy loss limits and shadowing in Drell-Yan dimuon production

    A precise measurement of the ratios of the Drell-Yan cross section per nucleon for an 800 GeV/c proton beam incident on Be, Fe and W targets is reported. The behavior of the Drell-Yan ratios at small target parton momentum fraction is well described by an existing fit to the shadowing observed in deep-inelastic scattering. The cross section ratios as a function of the incident parton momentum fraction set tight limits on the energy loss of quarks passing through a cold nucleus

    Measurement of Angular Distributions of Drell-Yan Dimuons in p+pp + p Interactions at 800 GeV/c

    We report a measurement of the angular distributions of Drell-Yan dimuons produced using an 800 GeV/c proton beam on a hydrogen target. The polar and azimuthal angular distribution parameters have been extracted over the kinematic range 4.5<mμμ<154.5 < m_{\mu \mu} < 15 GeV/c2^2 (excluding the Υ\Upsilon resonance region), 0<pT<40 < p_T < 4 GeV/c, and 0<xF<0.80 < x_F < 0.8. The p+pp+p angular distributions are similar to those of p+dp+d, and both data sets are compared with models which attribute the cos2ϕ\cos 2 \phi distribution either to the presence of the transverse-momentum-dependent Boer-Mulders structure function h1h_1^\perp or to QCD effects. The data indicate the presence of both mechanisms. The validity of the Lam-Tung relation in p+pp+p Drell-Yan is also tested.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Measurement of Angular Distributions of Drell-Yan Dimuons in p + d Interaction at 800 GeV/c

    We report a measurement of the angular distributions of Drell-Yan dimuons produced using an 800 GeV/c proton beam on a deuterium target. The muon angular distributions in polar angle θ\theta and azimuthal angle ϕ\phi have been measured over the kinematic range 4.5<mμμ<154.5 < m_{\mu \mu} < 15 GeV/c2^2, 0<pT<40 < p_T < 4 GeV/c, and 0<xF<0.80 < x_F < 0.8. No significant cos2ϕ2\phi dependence is found in these proton-induced Drell-Yan data, in contrast to the situation for pion-induced Drell-Yan. The data are compared with expectations from models which attribute the cos2ϕ2\phi distribution to a QCD vacuum effect or to the presence of the transverse-momentum-dependent Boer-Mulders structure function h1h_1^\perp. Constraints on the magnitude of the sea-quark h1h_1^\perp structure functions are obtained.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
